Azerbaijan: With Azeri composers for the first time since 2008, at Eurovision 2023!

According to the website, 12xal, the song that will be performed by the artist that will represent Azerbaijan in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023, will be exclusively composed by Azerbaijanis.

All five artists who are in the final phase of the internal selection, competed with songs, created by composers originally from Azerbaijan.

The five artists are:

  • Azer Nasibov
  • Humay Aslanova & Amrah Musayev
  • Leyla Izzatova
  • Mamagama
  • Turan & Tural Bağmanovlar

All of them performed their participation live in the same studio and these performances were videotaped. A focus group will evaluate the five performances and determine the artist and song with which Azerbaijan will be represented at Eurovision 2023. In fact, only one candidate has a foreign co-writer among the songwriters.

The news alone leads to the fact that Azerbaijan, which has participated in the contest since 2008 and appeared only once, in its first year of participation with a locally produced song, will compete for the second time with a song exclusively from an Azeri team.

Nadir Rustamli represented Azerbaijan at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin with the song “Fade to Black”. In the Grand Final it finished in 16th place with 106 points, however it is the first entry to qualify for the final with zero points from the public vote in the semi-final.
