Eurovision 2024: Which rehearsal had the most views on the first day?

Yesterday, the big moment we’ve all been waiting for has arrived! Rehearsals began with the first seven countries of the first semi-final taking the stage.

However, as we know on TikTok, all the first rehearsals are uploaded. Apart from their performances, we’ll also get a sneak peek backstage before they take the stage for the first time in a video of about one minute.

One of the many features of TikTok is the ability to add songs to each user’s video creation. However, the TikTok algorithm is usually able to detect the song used in the video, assign it to the correct track, and then include it in the total number of videos where that sound has been used. Based on this capability, the most popular songs before rehearsals were from the Netherlands and Italy. Will they receive the same promotion as before?

In less than 24 hours (April 28, 2024, time 17:20 CET), since the first clip from the rehearsals was uploaded, we have a indicative sample of which rehearsal was favored by the audience (here it should be noted that the videos were uploaded one after the other with a one and a half hour interval and there was a significant delay in their publication).

The rehearsals that had the most views are:

  1. Poland: LUNAThe Tower – 711.3 thousand views
  2. Ukraine: alyona alyona & Jerry HeilTeressa & Maria – 608.1 thousand views
  3. Serbia: Teya DoraRamonda – 606.7 thousand views
  4. Croatia: Baby Lasagna Rim Tim Tagi Dim – 484.7 thousand views
  5. Ireland: Bambie ThugDoomsday Blue – 208.7 thousand views
  6. Cyprus: Silia KapsisLiar -195.8 thousand views
  7. Lithiania: Silvester BeltLuktelk – 193 thousand views

With this small sample, we can infer that:

  • Poland’s performance possibly appealed to fans, with the caveat that the stage presence was a surprise – either positively or negatively.
  • The rehearsals of Ukraine and Serbia also gained huge popularity, surpassing the following four positions in views, demonstrating their strength in the semifinal.
  • Croatia, as one of the major favorites of the competition, did not gather particularly high views, although fans and betting companies have placed it at the top for victory, resulting in the stage presence not making enough of an impression.
  • Similarly, Lithuania did not impress fans at all, as it maintained the same appearance as its national final.

TikTok has played a significant role in the success of Eurovision songs in recent years. For example, Duncan Laurence’s winning entry “Arcade” became a global hit a year after winning the competition when it was used in over a million videos on TikTok. One of the earliest TikTok successes from Eurovision was Getter Jaani’s “Rockefeller Street”, which went viral on the platform in 2018 and has since been used in over two million videos. Let’s not forget that Armenia’s entry in 2022 by Rosa Linn with “Snap” gained over a billion views on the platform. Finally, Norway’s entry last year gained significant worldwide publicity months before the competition week, where it secured fifth place.

Eurovision 2024: Croatia’s First Rehearsal!

Closing the first half of the Semi-Final 1 – and today’s rehearsals – is Croatia with Baby Lagsana taking the stage for his first rehearsal, with his song Rim Tim Tagi Dim.

Who is Baby Lagsania?

Marko Purišić or with the stage name Baby Lasagna was born on 5 July 1995 in Umag of Croatia. He is a singer-songwriter and music producer. The artist wanted to follow his mother’s steps because she was a teacher among other family members and he expressed that he would have most likely become a teacher too if he had not decided to pursue a musical career instead. He did, however, work as a children’s assistant in elementary school for a year until quitting to study public relations in Zagreb. Baby Lagsania had previously also studied tourism and sound engineering. From 2011 to 2016 and from 2018 to 2022, Lagsania served as the guitarist for the Croatian rock band, Manntra. The band also participated in Dora 2019, securing the fourth position with the song “In the Shadows” with a total of 12 points.

Five years later he returned at Dora as a solo artist, which he won Dora and became the current representative of Croatia at the song contest. Rim Tim Tagi Dim is a self-described as a humorous song about the economic emigration of young Croatians, it was written solely by the artist in his bedroom.

The Rehearsal

Unfortunately this year, accredited journalists don’t get the chance to watch the first and second rehearsals, so we only get the information and content that the organizers officially release to the public.

The staging is quite similar to the Croatian National Selection. Baby Lasagnia wears giant frilly sleeves, a traditional costume among with make up in his eyes and a chocker. The overall performance has been polished up for Malmö Arena, the LED wall has changed but the main idea from Dora has been still there, the dancing neon cats make an appearance right at the end.

The dance moves also have changed, but there is not a major change on that. There are big smoke jets during the violin part of the song and in each chorus there are fire jets and cracker fireworks before the last bridge. Croatia’s performance was the biggest pyro display of the day by far.

Below you can watch a small clip from the Croatian first rehearsal, once it’s published on TikTok:

The second rehearsal for Croatia will be held on the 1st of May, when we will know how things will appear on screen for Baby Lagsana.

Croatia: Zagreb ready to host Eurovision 2025!

Baby Lasagna has managed to bring Croatia back in the limelight and the Croatian fans’ interest in the Eurovision Song Contest has skyrocketed.

Just yesterday, the mayor of Zagreb, Tomislav Tomasevic, was asked on reddit whether Zagreb can host Eurovision.

(Zagreb) is totally ready! The arena is already booked. Fingers crossed for Baby Lasagna to win in Sweden and Zagreb will help HRT with production and organization in every way.

At the same time people are dancing to the rhythm of Rim Tim Tagi Dim in five Croatian cities,. It is now one of the most popular dances and there is no one who has not danced it. The dances are being filmed in order to create an impressive video. As Maja Tokić and Tomislav Štengl (head of the Croatian delegation to Eurovision) pointed out:

We’ve been in all the cities with cameras, in every location, so we’re going to make a fantastic video out of it. Croatia is united again, this time not because of football, this time because of a wonderful boy from Umag and his whole team. We moved into first place and were first for a long time, and now we are second for a long time,

Baby Lasagna also appeared on Dutch TV and specifically on Beau van Erven Dorens’ show performing his song.

Baby Lasagna: Sharing Insights from Eurovision Preparations

Baby Lasagna made an appearance yesterday night on the HTV show “Kod nas doma,” straight from London where he attended one of the pre-Eurovision parties.

His performance took place on April 7th, alongside 32 other representatives out of 38. Before London, he had already performed in Madrid, and next week, he’s set to perform in Amsterdam.

Awaiting His Performance in Amsterdam

PreParties,” or warm-up events, serve as opportunities for us, the Eurovision representatives, to get to know each other better and connect with fans. It was fantastic, both in Madrid and London. And now, Amsterdam awaits us next week,” he said, adding that he was surprised to be recognized by fans outside the country, in London and Madrid.

Initially, he wasn’t sure about accepting engagements in London, Amsterdam, and Madrid, fearing it would take up too much of his time.

“But in Madrid, I realized that it’s all part of the Eurovision preparation. You perform in front of people, you travel, you get nervous. It’s actually like a few dress rehearsals before the real thing,” said Marko Purišić, better known as Baby Lasagna.

Becoming a Fan of Switzerland

One of the goals of participating in the PreParties was to hear how other representatives sound live.

“It was great, especially Slovenia, Serbia, and Italy caught my eye. They are perhaps my favorites at the moment. Although, Switzerland, ever since it climbed the betting odds, I listened to the song, and the song ‘kills it,'” he said, adding that after listening to the song live and online, he became a fan.

Baby Lasagna spent 32 days at the top of the official Eurovision betting odds, but he was overtaken by the aforementioned Swiss representative, Nemo.

“Now we’re in second place, and it’s a little easier for me. At least no one asks me about it anymore,” he joked.

“I Like Visiting My Parents and Not Talking Too Much About What’s Happening Now”

His family, he says, is his greatest support, and he draws the most energy and help from them.

“I like visiting my parents and not talking too much about what’s happening now. My dad starts talking about taking the car to the mechanic and similar things,” said Baby Lasagna, announcing at the end that he will soon start filming a documentary in collaboration with HRT.

Croatia: Käärijä’s reaction on Baby Lasagna’s “RIM TIM TAGI DIM”!

This Sunday, Baby Lasagna was crowned the winner of Dora 2024 and therefore Croatia’s representative in Eurovision 2024 with his song “RIM TIM TAGI DIM“. Even before the national selection, “RIM TIM TAGI DIM” caught the fandom’s attention leading Croatia to rise on the betting odds. As it was expected, Baby Lasagna won Dora 2024 with a landslide and will fly to Malmö.

However, there are no few commenting on how similar “RIM TIM TAGI DIM” sounds and looks compared to last year’s runner up, Käärijä, especially following Baby Lasagna’s performance in Dora. On a short video posted on TikTok displaying both Käärijä’s and Baby Lasagna’s performances, Käärijä commented the following:

Same vibe but its not the same! I love this crazy croatin song

The aforementioned comment of Käärijä was posted by Baby Lasagna on his Instagram story, while he considers this comment as an honor.

At the moment Baby Lasagna is one of the hot favorites to win the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, as he is currently placed second on the betting odds. Croatia will perform at the first half of the first semi-final on May 7.
