Eurovision 2022: Sweden’s First Rehearsal!

Today is the fourth day of rehearsals in Turin and now it’s the turn of the countries that are competing in the second half of the Second Semi Final to take over the stage!

Next up on stage for their first rehearsal is Sweden and Cornelia Jakobs with the song “Hold Me Closer“.

Who is Cornelia Jakobs?

Cornelia is a singer, songwriter, and this year’s winner of Melodifestivalen. Jakobs began her recording career as part of the RedOne-produced girl band Love Generation, who released their self-titled debut in the summer of 2010. Sadly, the group lasted just three singles in the fickle world of pop.

Undeterred, Cornelia launched a solo career in 2018, and has been busy releasing singles, performing to sell out crowds across the country, and working on her first album.

With a father who is a famous rockstar in Sweden, and a grandmother who is a composer, music has always been a fundamental part of this pop star’s life.

The Rehearsal

Cornelia’s staging has remained the same as it was in Melodifestivalen. The same circular projection screen prop is used, plus she wears the same outfit and is barefoot on stage.

Below you can watch a small clip from Sweden’s first rehearsal from Tik Tok:

Her moves and the camerawork are intuitive, making it one hell of an intimate and intense performance.

The second Swedish rehearsal will be held on the 6th of May, when we will know how things will appear on screen for the Swedish entry.

Eurovision 2022: Romania’s First Rehearsal!

The next country to have a go on their first rehearsal for Eurovision Song Contest 2022 is Romania and WRS with the song “Llámame”!

Who is WRS?

The beatmaker from Buzău began his artistic career as a dancer; performing on stage with Romanian pop icons such as Inna, and being hired as a house dancer for both Romania’s Got Talent and The Voice of Romania.

In 2015 he joined boyband SHOT for a short while, before moving to London to hone his craft as a songwriter and solo act.

In total, the Romanian recording artist has released 10 singles, 3 collaborations and is currently working on his forthcoming debut EP, Mandala.

The rehearsal

WRS is in wet look sparkly trousers and a red frilly shirt that comes off at the end to reveal a silver sequinned vest – our first outfit reveal of the competition! His male backing dancers are wearing tops so short it looks like they’re each wearing a Speedo as a t-shirt.

EBU / NATHAN REINDS

This ticks lots of Eurovision boxes – great dancing, fabulous costumes, lots of different musical influences and a proper party tune. Incidentally Llámame means ‘call me’ in Spanish. Call us, WRS – there’s a Euroclub dance floor in Turin with our name on it.

You can watch a small clip of Romania’s first rehearsal in the TikTok video below:

The second rehearsal of Romania will take place on Friday 6th May and we will have a better idea of what we will see from WRS on the stage.

Eurovision 2022: Estonia’s First Rehearsal!

The third country to have a go on their first rehearsal for Eurovision Song Contest 2022 is Estonia and Stefan with the song “Hope”!

Who is Stefan?

Stefan is a singer and songwriter, whose music has become something of a staple on Estonia’s airwaves over the past few years.

Stefan’s parents moved all the way from Armenia to Viljandi (in the south of the country) where they opened a restaurant and raised the aspiring singer.

His big break came in 2018 when he finished third in Estonia’s Eurovision preselection contest, Eesti Laul, as part of the duo VAJÉ with the song Laura (Walk with Me). He followed this up with another 3rd place finish in 2019, and made the finals again in 2020.

The rehearsal

It’s Estonia’s turn on stage, with Stefan singing Hope. Stefan is a big star in Estonia, where in 2020 he was voted the country’s sexiest man of the year. No information on who the current sexiest man is, but we’ll try to find out.

EBU / NATHAN REINDS

This song definitely has a country vibe, but to our ears there’s a bit of Måns Zelmerlöw and Aviici in there too. These are a few of our favourite things, so we’re all good.

Eurovision 2022: North Macedonia’s First Rehearsal!

The second country to have a go on their first rehearsal for Eurovision Song Contest 2022 is North Macedonia and Andrea with the song “Circles”!

Who is Andrea?

Andrea is relatively new to the world of pop, but her journey has gotten off to a flying start. It was during her younger years living in New York that she developed a keen interest in the gospel, soul and R&B music that surrounded her.

When her family moved back to North Macedonia, she enrolled in Skopje’s Faculty of Music Arts, the country’s leading music school, where she enhanced her burgeoning songwriting skills by learning to play guitar and piano.

The rehearsal

This is a really classy, stripped-back performance from Andrea – she’s alone on stage, dressed all in black, supported by nothing more than pulsing graphics and dramatic lighting.

EBU / NATHAN REINDS

She also uses the lift bridges over the water feature as graphic screens, which is only the second time we’ve seen them used this way so far – Moldova was the first. It’s really impactful, and the staging definitely gives Andrea’s powerful voice space to shine.

Below you can watch a small clip from North Macedonia’s first rehearsal from Tik Tok:

@eurovision Dressed all in black, supported by nothing more than pulsing graphics and dramatic lighting, @Andreamusic20’s first rehearsal on stage was very impressive! 👏🇲🇰 #Eurovision #Eurovision2022 #EurovisionTikTok ♬ original sound – Eurovision

Eurovision 2022: Ireland’s First Rehearsal!

The first country to have a go on their first rehearsal for Eurovision Song Contest 2022 is Ireland and Brooke with the song “That’s Rich”!

Who is Brooke Scullion?

Irish Alt Pop artist, Brooke has been making waves for her ferocious vocal delivery and dance worthy anthems. Rising to fame as a finalist of The Voice UK 2020, she wowed the judges and viewers with her show-stopping performances. Having duetted with Ella Eyre and been mentored by Grammy award-winning coach/singer Meghan Trainor, Brooke is closely following in the footsteps of these strong female artists.

Brooke won her spot to represent Ireland at Eurovision 2022 after a show stopping performance of “That’s Rich” on RTE’s Late Late Show Eurosong Special – she will represent Ireland at this year’s contest in Turin in May.

The rehearsal

Brooke had brought our first fabulous outfit of the day – an electric blue ensemble that includes hotpants with a chiffon overskirt. Chily for Ireland, but perfect for Italy.

It’s a confident performance that makes great use of the floor projections and overhead camera rig, with four backing dancers and a playful dance routine. It’s also a a strong vocal performance – Brooke has a really distinctive voice that sounds great in this big arena. A fun start to the day.

Hungary: MTVA will not broadcast Eurovision 2022!

The Hungarian public broadcaster MTVA will not broadcast this year’s Contest. Hungary has not participated in Eurovision since 2019 and did not choose to broadcast 2021 contest either. When the country did not participate in 2010 due to financial difficulties, both semi-finals and the Grand Final were broadcast on Duna TV.

Hungary withdrew from the Contest before 2020 competition. In November 2019, EBU revealed a list of participating countries on which Hungary was not in. MTVA has not made a statement as to why it chose to withdraw from the competition.

Hungary’s last participation was in 2019 with Joci Pápai and the song “Az én apám” however it did not manage to qualify to the big Final, getting 12th place with  97 points.

Eurovision 2022: San Marino’s First Rehearsal!

Heading towards the end of this group’s rehearsals, Achille Lauro from San Marino is taking up on stage next for the first rehearsal of his song Stripper

Everything about Achille Lauro:

Achille Lauro is an eclectic singer, songwriter and rapper from Verona, Italy. It’s not just music that Achille spends his time on, however. He’s acted, directed and is even an award-winning film producer, alongside hosting TV shows, putting on art exhibitions, authoring 3 books, and acting as the creative director for a record label.

He arrives at Eurovision having won the Una Voce per San Marino song contest, having previously competed in 3 editions of the prestigious Festival di Sanremo in his native Italy, in 2019, 2020 and 2022.

The Rehearsal

Malta’s sparkly piano has been taken off the stage, and is now replaced with a giant metal cage.

So, where to start? Achille Lauro in a sparkly mesh body stocking, luxury feather boa and cowboy hat and boots? The bonus fur pom-poms? The final chorus sung atop a red velvet bucking bronco?

This is glam rock, but make it COUTURE. The Eurovision stage has probably never seen anything like it, and that’s definitely a good thing.

As if this whole performance wasn’t hot enough already, San Marino have added ALL the smoke and flames. This is more pyro than we’ve seen from all the other acts combined, and it’s suddenly got VERY warm in the arena.

Eurovision 2022: Malta’s First Rehearsal!

Next up on stage we will be seeing Emma Muscat on her first rehearsal as the representative of Malta in this year’s competition with I Am What I Am

Everything about Emma Muscat:

Despite her young age, the 22-year-old Maltese pop singer, pianist and model has already carved out an impressive career for herself as a recording artist; capitalising on the success of her 2018 participation in the grand final of the popular Italian talent show, Amici di Maria De Filippi.

Muscat managed to win the Maltese National Final with another song,“Out Of Sight”, which received a somewhat lukewarm response from fans, and therefore Malta looked for a new song for Emma.

The Rehearsal

Malta is bringing up the stage our first grand piano of the day!

Emma’s staging features a huge plinth, a shiny grand piano, a sparkly disco ball dress and some really powerful vocals. She also uses the B Stage for the first time today, accompanied by four backing dancers.

This is a really great performance, and we can also confirm that Emma sings ‘I am what I am’ seventeen times in three minutes. You can’t really argue with this kind of commitment to self-actualisation.

Eurovision 2022: Georgia’s First Rehearsal!

The 5th act rehearsing today are Circus Mircus, representing Georgia, with their progressive alternative song Lock Me In

Everything about Circus Mircus:

The band was formed in Tbilisi at the end of 2020 by 3 circus academy dropouts and up to date they have released 11 songs. Their music is mostly experimental, mixing a lot of genres and sounds together through which they are willing to represent each member’s life experiences and inner world.

The Rehearsal

Apparently the whole performance is joyfully eccentric, with elements of Victorian circus, steampunk and neon graphic design woven through a really catchy pop song. On paper it shouldn’t really work, but it totally does.

All in all, it’s three very surreal minutes, but you know…it’s Circus Mircus. It was never going to be conventional, was it?
