Italy: The first betting odds for Sanremo 2025!

Yesterday, Carlo Conti revealed the list of thirty artists who will compete in the prestigious big category of the 75th edition of the Festival di Sanremo. This diverse and star-studded lineup represents a broad spectrum of the Italian music scene and will perform on Italy’s most renowned musical stage, competing for the coveted Golden Lion.

As the names of the artists were announced, early betting odds have already begun to shape a picture of who might take home the top prize, even at this early stage of the competition.

Elodie leading the betting odds

Currently leading the betting odds is Elodie, who is widely regarded as the front-runner to win the Golden Lion. At the height of her career, Elodie has built a strong and dedicated fan base, and this will mark her fourth appearance at the festival. With her stellar voice and established track record, she is aiming to finally secure a spot on the podium after previously competing in 2017, 2020, and 2023.

In second place in the betting odds is Giorgia, one of Italy’s most renowned female artists with numerous chart-topping hits throughout her career. Giorgia, a four-time Sanremo participant (1995, 1996, 2001, 2023), is no stranger to success at the festival. She won the competition in 1995 with her song Come Saprei, a victory that remains a significant milestone in her career.

In third place is Achille Lauro, who returns to Sanremo for the third time after competing in 2019 and 2022. In 2022, after his Sanremo performance, Achille went on to win UVPSM, representing San Marino at Eurovision 2022. His loyal following make him a strong contender once again.

Other former Eurovision stars are also in the running, with Francesco Gabbani sitting in 7th place and Francesca Michielin at 12th. As it stands, the full betting odds are shaping up as follows:

It is essential to remember that the betting odds at this stage are based purely on the artists’ names and the initial impressions their participation has left on the Italian public. Since the official songs for the competition have yet to be released, these odds are likely to change as the festival progresses. Historically, betting odds at this stage have not always accurately predicted the outcome, as the songs themselves play a significant role in swaying both public opinion and the jury’s votes. In fact, it is not uncommon for an artist who initially receives little attention to emerge as the winner based on their performance.

Italy: Sanremo 2025 will take place from 4 to 8 February

Sanremo 2025 will take place one week earlier than usual. The 75th Festival, which will take place at the Teatro Ariston form 4 to 8 February, will most likely determine the artist who will represent Italy in Switzerland.

Carlo Conti is continuing his preparations for Sanremo 2025. After he’s already made public the first major changes, we now know the dates:  from February 4 to 8, the modest town of Liguria will be the focus of all musical attention in Europe.

There are 24 songs vying for the Golden Lion, which is six fewer than the 30 entries in the competition this year.

More specifically:

  • First night: 24 artists will perform their songs. The top five will be announced in random order.
  • Second night: 12 artists will perform their songs for the second time. The top five will be announced in random order.
  • Third night: The remaining 12 artists will perform their contest songs for the second time. The top five will be announced in random order.
  • Fourth night: the competing artists will perform a duet/cover of an already existing song. There will be a winner, but this night’s results will not add up to the final results.
  • Fifth night: 24 artists will perform their songs. The top five performers from the combined rankings of all previous nights will qualify for the superfinal. The audience and judges will vote to determine the winner after they perform their song a second time.

Italy has not confirmed its participation in Eurovision 2025, nor if the Sanremo winner will represent the country in Switzerland.

Italy: The journalists’ ratings of the 30 Sanremo 2024 songs!

On Monday, January 15, media representatives heard the 30 Sanremo 2024 songs for the first time and then published their reviews. The betting odds have also been adjusted as a result of the reporters’ remarks, making it more probable than ever that a woman would win!

Journalists appear to believe that three female artists have the best songs in Sanremo 2024. The surprise comes from 72-year-old Loredana Berte, the sister of the legendary Mia Martini, who has received overwhelmingly excellent reviews—even 10s, the highest possible score—for her autobiographical rock song from nearly every journalist! Here’s the energetic song by Annalisa, who might finally win the Golden Lion in 2024 and represent Italy in the Eurovision contest. Third is the artist Angelina Mango. There are two former Eurostars in fourth and fifth place, Diodato and Mahmood, to complete the top 5.

As you can see, Annalisa is now the clear favorite to win after the changes to the betting odds. Goelier, who had dropped in the rankings earlier, is now in third place, while Alessandra Amoroso, who has received mixed reviews, is still in second place.

Naturally, because the journalists are listening to the studio versions of the songs, there could be a twist when we hear the songs on February 6, the opening night of the festival, when the songs are performed with a live orchestra.

At the end of the month, the lyrics of the songs will be made public.

Italy: Sanremo Giovani: First female victory in 14 years | A sign of things to come at Sanremo 2024?

It’s no secret that, in recent years, the various voting groups of the Sanremo Festival (journalists, television viewers, and the polling committee) have favored male artists over female performers. This appeared to change on Tuesday, December 19, as a female artist won the Sanremo Giovani trophy for the first time in 14 years! Does this portend a female triumph at the 74th Sanremo Festival, which takes place in less than two months?

Clara made history at this year’s Sanremo Giovani. Not only did she secure her spot in Sanremo 2024, but she also accomplished something that no other artist had achieved in over 14 years with her victory in Sanremo Giovani. Or, to put it another way, to defeat every male competitor. The last female winner of Sanremo Giovani was Arisa back in 2009.

Arisa is actually the last female winner of both the San Remo Giovani and regular San Remo Festivals, having won in the established artists category in 2014. Arisa did not represent her country in the Eurovision Song Contest, despite her expressed desire to do so. Unfortunately, 2014 was the only year that RAI selected its Eurovision representative internally, rather than via the historic festival.

It seems like there’s a significant chance of an upset based on the betting and recent reports. It appears that the tradition of the unceasing wins by men can be subverted by three established Italian female artists. With Annalisa in third and Angelina Mango in sixth place, Alessandra Amoroso leads the odds by a significant margin.

Italy: The new date of San Remo Giovani!

Italy’s public broadcaster, Rai, announced today that San Remo Giovani 2023 will not be held on December 13 as originally planned. Rather, December 19 is scheduled as the day for the popular festival’s final.  The reasons behind this modification are yet unknown.

San Remo Giovani is a sub-category of San Remo, where new artists are vying for a place in the February festival.

This year, 564 entries were submitted for San Remo Giovani. The largest proportion of this year’s participants comes from the Lazio region, followed by Lombardy and Sicily. Among the participants are 520 soloists, of whom 334 are men and 186 women. In addition, the list of participants includes 44 bands.

Of these candidates, 49 were selected for the next stage of the process, following a vote by a special jury chaired by Amadeus, the artistic director of the last five editions of the festival. The shortlisted artists will go through an audition process in the next few weeks.

At the end of the auditions, 8 artists will be selected, who will compete in the final of Sanremo Giovani 2023, which will be held at the Sanremo Casino Theatre, on 19 December. To these eight artists will be added four from the San Remo area, who will also be selected by the Rai special committee at the end of November.

The artists who win the first three places at the San Remo Giovani 2023 will be entitled to participate in the 74th San Remo Festival, the winner of which will, if they wish, have the opportunity to represent Italy in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest.

Last year Italy was represented by Marco Mengoni, with the song “Due Vite”, finishing in 4th place with 350 points.
