Eurovision 2023: The Second Day’s rehearsal schedule!

The big moment for all Eurofans has arrived. The wait comes to an end, as we are now in the most important days before the live shows. Rehearsals officially begun yesterday for the 67th Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Liverpool, United Kingdom.

The rehearsals are divided into two phases; the first phase will last three days, from Sunday 30/04 until Tuesday 02/05 and will include the first rehearsals of all the countries taking part in the two semi-finals of the competition. Last year’s changes in the way rehearsals are covered continue this year, as the Press Center opens on Monday after the first and second rehearsals, which means that the information we will have for the first week of the competition will come exclusively from the material to be provided by the EBU to the accredited journalists.

Eurovision 2023: Latvia’s First Rehearsal!

The fourth act to take the stage today for their first rehearsal are Sudden Lights. The indie rock band represents Latvia at the 67th Eurovision Song Contest, after winning Supernova 2023 with their song “Aijā”!

Who are the Sudden Lights?

Sudden Lights are a Latvian indie rock band, founded in 2012 in Riga. The band consists of vocalist Andrejs Reinis Zitmanis, drummer Mārtiņš Matīss Zemītis, guitarist Kārlis Matīss Zitmanis, and bassist Kārlis Vārtiņš. The band took part in Supernova 2018 with their song “Just Fine” and placed second. In February 2023, the group won Supernova 2023 with the song “Aijā” and will represent Latvia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023, bringing the Latvian language on the Eurovision stage for the first time since 2004.

The rehearsal

Sudden Lights’s luggage with their stage outfits haven’t yet arrived in Liverpool but there is no reason to worry as they will arrive today.

This performance uses the same style of atmospheric/sudden lighting as we saw at Supernova – it’s exactly the kind of performance that lends itself to a big arena stage. Also lead singer Andrejs Reinis Zitmanis’ melancholy lyrics sound great – there’s a lovely moment of quiet stillness at the end that’s evoking many emotions.

Below you can watch a small clip from Latvia’s first rehearsal from Tik Tok:

The second rehearsal of Latvia will take place on Wednesday May 3 so we will get a better idea of what we will see from Sudden Lights on stage.

Eurovision 2023: Serbia’s First Rehearsal!

Next up on stage is Luke Black for his 1st rehearsal on the stage of Liverpool. Luke Black represents Serbia at the 67th Eurovision Song Contest, after winning Pesma za Evroviziju ’23 with his song “Samo mi se spava”!

Who is Luke Black?

Luka Ivanović, known professionally as Luke Black, is a Serbian singer and songwriter. He was born in Čačak on 18 May 1992, started writing lyrics at the age of 12 and later started to compose and produce his own songs. He became the first Serbian artist to be signed under Universal Music Group, through which he released his debut EP Thornes in February 2015. It was followed by Neoslavic (2018) and F23.8 (2023). He is currently based in London.

The rehearsal

Luke gets to the stage to perform his indie/techno number that includes both English and Serbian lyrics. Staging-wise, Luke has brought the huge prop from the Serbian National Finals, that looks like a bed/oyster shell, along with four masked dancers trailing long hoses – we’ve heard a rumour that smoke is going to come out of those, so we’ll update when we see the pyro rehearsal. The pulsing bass and video game graphics and the dark, surreal and hypnotic vibe create a memorable performance.

For the final rehearsal, Luke unleashes smoke from the backpacks worn by their backing dancers, just for the final chorus. It makes the whole thing feel even more apocalyptic. It’s our first pyro of the day.

Below you can watch a small clip from Serbia’s first rehearsal from Tik Tok:

Eurovision 2023: Malta’s First Rehearsal!

The second act that steps on the stage of the M&S Bank Arena for their first rehearsal are The Busker. The boy band is ready to represent Malta at the 67th Eurovision Song Contest, after winning MESC 2023 with their song “Dance (Our Own Party)”!

Who are The Busker?

The Maltese indie pop band “The Busker” was formed in October 2012 and currently consists of David “Dav.Jr” Meilak, Jean Paul Borg and Sean Meachen. The group draws inspiration from 1960s pop bands such as The Beatles and The Beach Boys. They started posting covers and original music on YouTube. Their debut album, “Telegram”, was released in 2017, followed by “Ladies and Gentlemen” the following year. After winning MESC 2023, they are set to represent the island nation at Eurovision 2023.

The rehearsal

This is a funretro funk/pop performance, with an epic sax hook. Staging-wise, The Busker have brought quite a few props, with a four-part set that includes a party house (featuring the Destiny cardboard cutout), a yellow park bench and a lamppost, a red car and a tiny room with a sofa. The band dance between each part of the set, and it’s a clever visual storytelling in 3 acts.

The act features an outfit-change, as the chunky sweaters are swapped out for silver sequins for the final chorus.

Below you can watch a small clip from Malta’s first rehearsal from Tik Tok:

Eurovision 2022: Azerbaijan’s First Rehearsal!

The next artist that sets foot on the Eurovision 2022 stage for his first rehearsal is Nadir Rustamli, representing Azerbaijan with the emotional ballad “Fade To Black“.

Everything about Nadir Rustamli:

Nadir is 22 years old, born on July 8, 1999 in the Salyan area. Graduated from Azerbaijan University of Tourism Management. Although he has been working professionally with music for 4 years, he has been working in this field for 7 years. Apart from singing, he composes, plays the piano and guitar, but is also involved in sports.

She has participated in many domestic competitions, such as the National Student Spring 2019 song contest (first place) and the YouthVision 2019 international song contest (second place). In addition, he is the winner of this year’s “Voice of Azerbaijan”.

The Rehearsal

Nadir sings this powerful ballad from a set of steps that are set up like stadium bleachers, using interesting camera angles as he moves through a routine with a contemporary dancer. The steps then split in half so they can face each other.

It’s REALLY clever, and the moves and lighting really help to give this song extra impact. That’s going to look amazing on TV and in the arena next Thursday – well played, Azerbaijan.

Eurovision 2022: Serbia’s First Rehearsal!

After Michael Ben David from Israel, Konstrakta from Serbia is ready for her first rehearsal on the stage of the 66th Eurovision Song Contest, where she will perform the song “In Corpore Sano“.

Everything About Konstrakta :

Ana Đurić, aka Konstrakta, is 28 years old and was born in Belgrade. After participating in music groups Mistakemistake and Zemlja gruva! from 1997 until 2019, Konstrakta started her solo career.

On 8 February 2022, “In corpore sano” was announced as one of the 36 entries for the national selection festival broadcast on Radio Television of Serbia to choose Serbia’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. Entering the competition as an underdog, Konstrakta quickly acquired popularity following her performance in the first semi-final on 3 March, where she placed second and thus qualified for the final. In the final, which was held on 5 March, “In corpore sano” won both the jury vote and the public vote, receiving 31.34% of the public votes and therefore winning the competition.

The Rehearsal

As with previous performances from Konstrakta, the staging involves some quality furniture, intense hand-washing, and some nice towel choreography from her five backing singers.

This song and performance is entirely different from anything else in Eurovision this year and has a really interesting, hypnotic quality. Also how clean are Konstrakta’s hands going to be after all these rehearsals?

The Rehearsal

Finland’s set is covered with with huge, floating black balloons, and the band have brought bright yellow wet weather clothing to the Turin stage. Maybe they’re planning a dip in the waterfall?

As you’d expect from The Rasmus, this is a really confident performance that packs a powerful visual punch with the yellow lighting. They’re like a swarm of rock bees, and we’re very much awake.

Of COURSE Finland have fireworks and smoke jets in the final chorus – it’s pure rock ‘n’ roll.

Eurovision 2022: Greece’s First Rehearsal!

The second day of rehearsals continues with Greece and Amanda Georgiadi Tenfjord entering the stage of PalaOlimpico for her first technical rehearsal with the song “Die Together”.

Who is Amanda?

Amanda Georgiadi Tenfjord is a critically acclaimed international singer and songwriter. Tenfjord spent the early years of her life living in Greece, before later relocating to Norway with her family, where she found herself in the same school class as Nordic popstress Sigrid.

She released her first EP, “First impression” under the stage name Amanda Tenfjord, from the city from which she grew up and received excellent reviews. Her second EP includes the song “Then I fell in love” which is a great radio success, remaining for over 20 weeks in the official top 10 radio chart of Norway. In 2020 Netflix includes the song “Troubled Water” in the series “Spinning out”.

When she’s not making music, Amanda studies medicine and has been doing her placement in a hospital for COVID-19 patients.

Τhe Rehearsal

Amanda Georgiadi Tenfjord is up next, singing her ballad “Die Together”. The staging for Greece’s entry is really interesting – just Amanda on the stage in a long, silvery-white dress, surrounded by fallen-over, empty chairs against a blue backdrop. There’s an echo on the vocal that feels quite haunting – it’s impossible not to watch. VERY dramatic.
