The Rehearsal

Well this is a lot of fun. LUM!X and Pia Maria are surrounded by a huge circular neon lighting rig, giving it big Austrian dance energy from inside their own personal halo. Put your hands up, Turin.

They’ve brought the flames and smoke jets with them. There’s a very small party happening in the Green Room – there are only about twenty people watching this first rehearsal, but they’re all having fun.

Below you can watch a small clip from Austria’s first rehearsal from Tik Tok:

Eurovision 2022: Denmark’s First Rehearsal!

The third act for today is Denmark with REDDI and their song “The Show” and she is ready to make her first impression of this year’s Eurovision stage in Turin.

Everything about REDDI:

REDDI are a Danish/Swedish pop-rock band made up of Siggy on vocals, Ida on bass, Agnes on guitar, and Ihan on drums. The group made their debut at the 2022 edition of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, where they won with their song “The Show”. For drummer Ihan, this is the second time she has graced the Eurovision stage, having previously participated in 2012 with Danish artist Soluna Samay.

The Rehearsal

The band brought some serious retro styling too – is this the most fashion-forward Eurovision ever? Maybe it’s the Italian influence, but we’re loving all this year’s looks.

They’ve also gone for block neon colours on the graphic backdrop, which give it big stage impact. Throw in a bonus key change, and we’ve definitely shaken off the Sunday cobwebs. Reddi also have on-stage fireworks.

Eurovision 2022: Croatia’s First Rehearsal!

The second day of rehearsals continues with the Croatia and Mia Dimšić entering the stage of PalaOlimpico for her first technical rehearsal with the song “Guilty Pleasure”.

Who is Mia?

Born in Osijek, Dimšić’s musical career began when rock band Džentlmeni invited her to accompany them gigging in the US and Canada. After the tour had finished, it wasn’t long before the singer started composing her own songs. Mia’s creativity has since led to two chart-topping albums and also she already released her own memoir Cesta Do Sna (The Road to a Dream).

The Rehearsal

Mia’s dress  is a hot pink gown with flamenco ruffles. She is accompanied by three contemporary dancers who provide some lyrical storytelling with lots of movement. It’s different from anything we’ve seen so far in rehearsals, and makes great use of the huge stage.

Below you can watch a small clip from Croatia’s first rehearsal from Tik Tok:

The next country for the first rehearsals of Eurovision Song Contest 2022 is Bulgaria with Intelligent Music Project and their song “Intention”!

Intelligent Music Project is a supergroup of musicians with vast experience of performing on stage, either together or with other bands. The group has an open-door policy when it comes to invigorating its line-up with other talented musicians. The members of the group are Ronny Romero, Bisser Ivanov, Slavin Slavchev, Ivo Stefanov, Dimiter Sirakov and Stoyan Yankoulov.

The Rehearsal

Some incredible neon lighting in this performance, and impressive use of geometric shapes on the graphic backdrop too. This is a hugely polished performance from Bulgaria – there may only be a handful of spectators in the Pala Olimpico, but they’ve just blown the roof OFF.

It’s our first pyro of the day! Bulgaria have brought ALL the flames to the final chorus. We did not need eyebrows anyway.

Eurovision 2022: Ukraine First Rehearsal!

Up next for the first rehearsals of Eurovision Song Contest 2022 is Ukraine and Kalush Orchestra with the song “Stefania”!

About Kalush Orchestra

Kalush Orchestra is a Ukrainian hip-hop band that combines ethnic motifs with modern sounds using different folk instruments. The band was named after the Ukrainian city of Kalush. Set in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. Serving as a mascot that inspires the band to involve different folk elements and authentic Ukrainian music within their songs and is the hometown of band member Oleh Psiuk.

The members of Kalush Orchestra are Oleh Psiuk, Tymofii Muzychuk, Ihor Didenchuk, Vitalii Duzhyk, Oleksandr Slobodianyk and Vlad Kurochka.

The Rehearsal

So Stefania is a tribute to band member Oleh’s mother, and apparently she did not know he’d written it until she saw them perform it on Ukraine’s Eurovision selection show,  Vidbir . We bet that was a pretty special moment for Oleh’s mum, and now she gets to see them perform on this huge Eurovision stage. Some incredible outfits in this lineup – not everyone can pull off a sparkly waistcoat paired with a pink bucket hat, never mind the German flag made entirely of fringing. But these guys are nailing it.

Eurovision 2022: Slovenia First Rehearsal!

Returning from the break and continuing the first rehearsals of Eurovision Song Contest 2022 is Slovenia and LPS  with the song “Disko”!

About LPS

LPS (Last Pizza Slice) formed in December 2018 in the music room of the Grammar School Celje-Center. As well as the disco with which most new fans will now associate them, the group also dabble in soul-pop, funk, blues, rock and jazz. At the beginning of their career, they grew a dedicated fan base through their quirky, non-commercial interpretations of commercial hits.

Members of LPS are Filip (vocal), Gašper (drums), Mark (electric guitar), Zala (bass guitar, tenor and alto saxophone), and Žiga (electric keyboards).

The Rehearsal

We LOVE a giant on-stage disco ball! For scale, we’d say it’s roughly the size of two Fiat 500s stacked on top of one another. We’ll post a picture later so you can tell us on Twitter that we chose the wrong Italian car. LPS are looking fabulous in classic sixties tailoring. This song is pure joy, and these guys are delivering it with their effortless cool. We’re smiling and having a little bop. How could you not?

Eurovision 2022: Switzerland First Rehearsal!

Next up on the stage of Eurovision Song Contest 2022 is SwitzerlandMarius Bear with the song “Boys Do Cry” is ready for his first rehearsal on the stage of PalaOlimpico in Turin!

Who is Marius Bear?

Marius is a multi-talented musician from Appenzell in Switzerland. In 2016, Bear abandoned his plan of becoming a construction machinery mechanic, in order to tour Germany and Switzerland as a street musician. At one festival, he got to know a famous producer who invited him to New York, and quickly became part of the Swiss artistic and creative arts scene there.

The globe-trobber was on the move once more in 2017, heading to the United Kingdom, where he studied music production at the prestigious BIMM Institute in London. It was this literal journey of self-discovery that ultimately led to the release of his first album, Not Loud Enough, which soared into the Top 20 of the Swiss album charts.

The Rehearsal

Following on from Lithuania, we’ve got another stripped back, classy performance from Switzerland’s Marius – he’s dressed all in black, with nothing more than a spotlight and some atmospheric lighting for support. His vocal sounds great – he has a really distinctive voice and the acoustics in the Pala Olimpico are adding some extra drama.

That was a really nice rehearsal, we suspect the Swiss delegation will be very happy with that.

Below you can watch a small clip of Switzerland’s first rehearsal:

Eurovision 2022: Lithuania’s First Rehearsal!

The third act for today is Lithuania with Monica Liu with her song “Sentimentai” and she is ready to make her first impression of this year’s Eurovision stage in Turin.

Who is Monika?

Monica Liu is one of Lithuania’s most popular and respected artists. After graduating from the University of Klaipėda, where she studied jazz, globe-trotting Monica spent time studying in Massachusetts, living in London, before then settling in Vilnius.

Since her debut in 2015, Liu has released three albums and plenty more singles. Her repertoire is so impressive that she’s been called upon to sit on the panel of two of Lithuania’s biggest talent shows: The Voice and The Masked Singer.

According to the artist, she has been considering making her way to the Eurovision stage for many years, and the time proved right for her now, upon the composition of Sentimentai, which was written and recorded in London.

The Rehearsal

Unfortunately, the Lithuanian Head of Delegation has told LRT this morning that they are no longer able to stage Monika Liu’s Eurovision performance as they expected, due to a lot of technical difficulties. So, as we know so far, the Lithuanian Delegation decided to present something completely different from  what they expected.

On the first run, Monika has gone for a stunning silver sequinned dress and a backdrop of atmospheric swirly graphics. Otherwise it’s a stripped-back, classy performance – no dancers and props required, Monika’s totally got this.

There’s a lovely camera shot at the end of Monika’s performance where it sweeps up from the waterfall to Monika on stage. In her long sequinned dress she looked like a fish – it’s a really nice ending that makes the most of this incredible stage.

Below you can watch a small clip from Latvia’s first rehearsal from Tik Tok:

Eurovision 2022: Latvia’s First Rehearsal!

The first day of rehearsals continues with the Latvian group Citi Zēni entering the stage of PalaOlimpico for their first technical rehearsal with the song “Eat Your Salad“.

Everything about Citi Zēni:

Citi Zēni are an award-winning, 6-piece band from Riga, who were formed at the beginning of 2020. The self-proclaimed ‘Princes of Rap’ and ‘Divas of 21st Century Pop’ are just as well known for their energetic performances and eccentric style as they are for their cheeky lyrics. The band released their debut album, Suņi Iziet Ielās, to much critical acclaim and have already started work on the follow-up album, planning to release a second single from it shortly after the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest has taken place.

The eco-friendly sextet is made up of Jānis on vocals, Dagnis who contributes vocals and saxophone, Reinis on keyboards, Krišjānis playing guitar, Roberts giving us bass, and Toms on drums.

The Rehearsal

Citi Zēni are on stage in their brightly coloured suits – like kids TV presenters, but make it fashion. Even the guy in yellow on drums looks stylish, and that’s a tough look to carry off. It’s also our first on-stage band of the competition (but definitely not the last) – it served Måneskin well last year, but that was a slightly different vibe. They graphic backdrop is heavily fruit-based with a lot of colours, and we are in no doubt that being green is both hot and cool!

A few sound issues for Latvia too on their second run, but that’s what first rehearsals are for. Sound aside, as a visual spectacle this performance looks amazing on a big stage.

Below you can watch a small clip from Latvia’s first rehearsal from Tik Tok:
