EBU: Joost Klein violated the contest rulles and was disqualified

As expected, the EBU immediately after the announcement of the Swedish public prosecutor’s office, which due to doubts and lack of evidence closed the case file for any criminal offenses of Joost Klein regarding the incident that occurred during the previous contest, issued explanatory notice on the official website of the competition. The EBU says that the expulsion of Joost Klein from Eurovision 2024, was done because he violated the regulations of the contest and was independent of the judicial outcome of the case.

Joost Klein “innocent” beyond doubt

According to what the Swedish public prosecutor’s office announced earlier, the case file was closed for lack of evidence. This means that Joost Klein will not be prosecuted further.

The Swedish public prosecutor writes that the investigation into a 26-year-old man who allegedly threatened a woman has been closed. The investigation shows that Klein made a motion that hit the camera. According to the prosecutor, the incident happened quickly and the stories of Klein and the camerawoman are conflicting. It is therefore not possible to know exactly what happened and whether there was criminally unacceptable behavior under Swedish law.

Today the investigation is closed because it cannot be proven that this act caused real fear and that this was the man’s intention.

Fredrik Jönsson, prosecutor

The EBU stands by its decision to expel Joost Klein

The EBU expelled Joost Klein from the final of Eurovision 2024 as you remember, immediately after the complaint of a worker in the production of the contest. Wanting to clarify its position, the EBU immediately after today’s acquittal of Joost Klein from the criminal prosecution states:

The EBU aims to ensure the Eurovision Song Contest is a show for everyone and is a safe place for staff, artists, guests and fans.

Like all responsible employers, we do not tolerate inappropriate behaviour and will always respond to any workplace issues that are reported to us.

The decision to disqualify Mr Klein from this year’s event was made in strict accordance with Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) rules and governance procedures, after an internal investigation.

In parallel, Swedish police decided to open a formal investigation into the conduct of Mr Klein during the Second Semi Final, which we understand was closed today without further action.

This was an investigation into whether a criminal act was committed and not whether Mr Klein behaved inappropriately and breached ESC rules and procedures. This new development therefore does not have any impact on our decision which we stand by completely.

Jean Philip De Tender, Αναπληρωτής Γενικός Διευθυντής και Διευθυντής Μέσων Ενημέρωσης της EBU

Essentially, based on the above announcement, the criminal responsibilities of Joost Klein, which do not exist according to the Swedish prosecutor’s office, are separated from the violation of the competition regulations that were violated in the incident in question, a conclusion reached by the EBU after an internal investigation which he did.

We now await with interest the reaction of the Dutch public television AVROTROS and the decision it will take on its participation or not in Eurovision 2025 next May in Switzerland.

The Netherlands: The prosecution of Joost Klein stopped due to lack of evidence!

Joost Klein will not be prosecuted for the incident at this year’s Eurovision due to a lack of evidence.

The investigation into Joost Klein and the incident that happened at the Eurovision Song Contest has been discontinued. The Swedish public prosecutor’s office says there is a lack of evidence. This means that Joost Klein will not be prosecuted.

The Swedish public prosecutor writes that the investigation into a 26-year-old man who allegedly threatened a woman has been closed. The investigation shows that Klein made a motion that hit the camera. According to the prosecutor, the incident happened quickly, and Klein’s and the camerawoman’s stories differ. Therefore, it is not possible to know exactly what happened.

In his statement, prosecutor Fredrik Jönsson said:

“Today, the investigation closes because it cannot be proven that the act caused real fear and that this was the intention of the man”

Dutch witnesses were also heard on the case. Last month it was announced that the Dutch public prosecutor’s office had reported this to the Swedish public prosecution service.

Joost Klein was disqualified from the Eurovision Song Contest last May because of the incident. The singer qualified for the final on behalf of the Netherlands with the song “Europapa”. On the day of the final, it became clear that Joost Klein was not welcome on the Eurovision stage that night. The decision angered AVROTROS, the Dutch broadcaster responsible for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Klein himself has yet to share his side of the story with the media following the incident. AVROTROS has expressed doubts about participating in the Eurovision Song Contest if the organizer European Broadcasting Union (EBU) does not make any changes to its policy. Several delegations complained of an unpleasant atmosphere behind the scenes at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest

Belgium: VRT invites Joost Klein for Eurovision 2025!

The recent public call of Joost Klein to the Belgian public broadcaster seems to have found a response, since the Dutch-speaking public television of Belgium with a post on social media expresses its interest in the artist and the possible representation of the country by him in Eurovision 2025 .

A few days earlier at a concert in Belgium, Joost Klein, responding to a banner of his fans calling for him to return with the Netherlands to Eurovision 2025, replied:

Who told you that I want to represent this country! Belgium call me!

Studio Brussel (VRT) did not miss the opportunity and responded to Joost Klein. The Belgian broadcaster published a post on Instagram in which it wrote: “@joostklein check private messages please, thank you”, along with a video of Klein doing his reading. While she hinted that she is trying to get in touch with the Dutch singer.

It is obvious that Belgian public broadcaster is interested in seeing Joost Klein compete in Eurosong 2025 and why not represent the country in Switzerland. VRT will hold Eurosong 2025 to select the artist and song that will represent the country in the competition. There will be no open call for song submissions, but by invitation only to established artists.

Artists who receive an invitation will be asked to submit up to two original songs to VRT. The songs will be auditioned and a committee will decide which artists and which songs will compete in Eurosong 2025, to represent Belgium at Eurovision 2025.

Recall that the Dutch singer Joost Klein was disqualified a few hours before the final of Eurovision 2024 after a complaint filed against him by a Swedish photographer in the production of the contest. The complaint, which has gone to justice, was that Joost Klein used violence against her.

The Deputy Director General of the European Broadcasting Union, Jean Philip De Tender, referred to Joost Klein’s desire to compete in Eurovision 2025, saying that this is possible, as long as his participation would not violate the contest’s regulations:

If there is no violation of the rules, I see no reason why he cannot participate. at Eurovision 2025.

Unlike Belgium, which is already moving forward with the procedures to find its representative in the next contest, Joost Klein’s native Netherlands, has not yet made it clear whether it will take part in Eurovision 2025, pending actions from the EBU, to avoid situations that happened in Malmö.

Joost Klein does not want to represent the Netherlands in 2025 but … Belgium!

Joost Klein, who with his behavior turned the spotlight on him in this year’s conetst, now tries to provoke discussions again with a new statement. According to his words in his last concert, he calls on the public television of Belgium to give him the representation of the country for Eurovision 2025!

After being eliminated from the Eurovision 2024 final, Joost Klein didn’t want to hear about the Eurovision contest, using not the kindest words about his experience in Malmö. But a few days earlier at the Pinkpop festival he seemed to change his mind and said in front of everyone present there, why not in 2025!

While everyone expected that he meant one more participation with his country The Netherlands, Joost Klein has other plans… or so he says.

More specifically, while he was singing in Belgium, wanting to comment on a banner held by some of his fans, which read: Joost for Eurovision 2025 with the Dutch flag on it as well, he said:

Who told you that I want to represent this country! Belgium call me!

Of course, after all the above, no one can take Joost’s words seriously, which change according to his mood. Only time will tell, and so will the judicial outcome of his case.

We remind you that a female employee of the Swedish public television who worked for this year’s competition, sued Joost Klein for violence against her. This resulted in his disqualification from the Eurovision 2024 final.

The Netherlands has not yet clarified whether it will take part in Eurovision 2025. On the other hand, Belgium will hold Eurosong 2025, but without an open call for song submissions, but with an invitation to specific creators and artists. This means that if Joost Klein really wants to represent Belgium at the next Eurovision, he will have to win the national final, Eurosong 2025.

The Netherlands: “Why the f*ck not 2025”, says Joost Klein!

He was undoubtedly one of the stars of Eurovision 2024, Joost Klein, who represented the Netherlands in this year’s competition with the song Europapa, but was unable to compete in the final after the EBU decided to disqualify him, seems he not rule out the possibility of returning to Eurovision in 2025.

Joost Klein sang at noon on Saturday at Pinkpop, Europapa. He had with him the team that also accompanied him to Malmö. The artist who was disqualified from the Eurovision final shortly before the start of the competition, due to an incident that brought him into contact with Swedish justice, says he could try again in 2025.

Without these people, the band and the people around me, there would be no Eurovision. So many people worked so hard, for months, everyone! Why the fuck not 2025?

Both the artist’s manager, as well as the Dutch public television Avrotros, did not want to comment on this. Everything, of course, will probably be decided by the outcome of the court with the employee of the Swedish public television, for the incident of violence that she denounced him and that happened behind the scenes of the competition.

A new update has emerged regarding the disqualification of the Netherlands’ Joost Klein hours before the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, despite having qualified from Thursday’s second semi-final.

According to the widely circulated Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, Dutch representative Joost Klein appears to have confessed to this violent behavior by using his fist against a photographer from this year’s competition production, justifying his act by saying that the entire approach by the photographers was something stressful to him.

A prosecution is expected, with a preliminary trial date reportedly set for June.

The head of the investigation hotline section in Malmö stated that:

“It doesn’t really matter if the person is still in the country, we can pursue that case anyway.”

Breaking News: AVROTROS statement about the incident that led to the Dutch disqualification!

AVROTROS just released a statement about the incident that led to the disqualification of Joost Klein from this year’s Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final! The statement reads the following:

“An incident occurred after last Thursday’s performance.
Against clearly made agreements, Joost was filmed when he had just gotten off stage and had to rush to the greenroom. At that moment, Joost repeatedly indicated that he did not want to be filmed. This wasn’t respected. This led to a threatening movement from Joost towards the camera. Joost did not touch the camera woman. This incident was reported, followed by an investigation by the EBU and police. Yesterday and today we consulted extensively with the EBU and proposed several solutions. Nevertheless, the EBU has still decided to disqualify Joost Klein.

AVROTROS finds the penalty very heavy and disproportionate. We stand for good manners -let there be no misunderstanding about that- but in our view, an exclusion order is not proportional to this incident. We are very disappointed and upset for the millions of fans who were so excited for tonight. What Joost brought to the Netherlands and Europe shouldn’t have ended this way.”
