Eurovision 2024: The rules of Eurovision 2024 are released! | The ratio between juries and televoting is still not specified!

EBU has released through the official Eurovision website the rules of the 2024 contest to be held in Malmö, Sweden.

What needs to be pointed out is that the National Juries and the National Audiences will be combined according to a ration which will be decided later. More specifically the rules specify:

“In the Final; the points of the National Audiences and of the National Juries shall be combined according to a ratio which is determined by the EBU, subject to the Reference Group approval, to calculate the official result of the Final.

For example, if the ratio is 50-50, the points of the National Jury carry the same weight as the points of the National Audiences”

As it seems there are also still no plans to introduce the use of Auto-Tune in the contest and use of such or lipsyncing are explicitly prohibited. The pre-recorded backing vocals are still allowed in this year’s contest too.

Junior Eurovision 2023: Pre-recorded vocals may not be allowed!

There seems to be a big change coming to Junior Eurovision 2023. According to a press release from the Spanish National Broadcaster, RTVE, all vocals must be live.

More specifically, a passage from the same press release, which is an open call for finding the next Spanish representative, states the following:

The EBU has introduced a series of changes to the Junior Eurovision 2023 rules. It specifies that the performances on stage must be carried out live. In addition, no processor will be allowed for pitch corrections or full-screen insertion of video clips as part of stage performances.

The pitch correction software, mostly common as autotune, was allowed for the first time in this year’s Norwegian Eurovision pre-selection and the “full-screen insertion of video clips” was used as a part of the Polish performance in Junior Eurovision 2022.

If the aforementioned is confirmed by the EBU, it will be the first time in Junior Eurovision history that pre-recorded vocals will be prohibited.

What is more interesting is whether we will see that change of the rules in the next Eurovision Song Contest. Pre-recorded vocals were first introduced in Eurovision during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, in order to help the delegations deal with COVID-19 requirements. The use of pre-recorder vocals took the green light both for the 2022 and 2023 edition, causing controversy among fans and people in the music industry with the fear of the contest losing its integrity.

Junior Eurovision 2023 will be hosted in Nice after France’s win with Lissandro in the previous edition of the contest hosted in Yerevan.
