Croatia: Baby Lasagna denies monetary award and asks to be given to charity instead!

Undoubtedly, Baby Lasagna, the Croatian representative in Eurovision 2024, did the impossible. From being a substitute act for Dora 2024, he won the national selection, made himself one of the hot favorites to win Eurovision 2024, won the public voting and ended up second overall. Baby Lasagna won Croatia’s best placement in Eurovision Song Contest as an independent state and despite not winning the event, he was welcomed in Zagreb as a national hero.

In that context, the Croatian Government decided to award Baby Lasagna a monetary award of fifty thousand euros for his Eurovision success as well as a recognition for his contribution on the nation’s promotion in the international scene, which is of vital importance for a small country.

However, Baby Lasagna could not accept the award and calls for the money intended to him to be given to charity instead:

I thank the Croatian Government for the monetary award in the amount of 50.000 euros. However, I cannot accept that money. I could give many reasons why, but the first, most important and sufficient one is that there are many other individuals and organizations that this money will help much more.

Hereby, I am asking Mr. Plenković to donate 25.000 euros on behalf of me and the Croatian Government to the Institute for Pediatric Oncology and Hematology with the “Mladen Ćepulić” Day Hospital. Furthermore, I would like to donate the other 25.000 euros to the Institute for Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation, KBC Zagreb.

Eurovision 2024: Which rehearsal has the most views on TikTok?

Two days ago, the first rehearsals for all 37 entries officially concluded, and today the second rehearsals are expected to be completed, with the Big 5 and the host country Sweden taking the stage at the Malmö Arena for the second time! This means that we are getting closer to the Eurovision week, with the Dress and Jury Rehearsals for the first semi-final starting on Monday.

However, as we know on TikTok, all the first rehearsals are uploaded. Apart from their performances, we’ll also get a sneak peek backstage before they take the stage for the first time in a video of about one minute.

One of the many features of TikTok is the ability to add songs to each user’s video creation. Based on this capability, the most popular songs before rehearsals were from the Netherlands and Italy. Will they receive the same promotion as before?

TikTok has played a significant role in the success of Eurovision songs in recent years. For example, Duncan Laurence’s winning entry “Arcade” became a global hit a year after winning the competition when it was used in over a million videos on TikTok. One of the earliest TikTok successes from Eurovision was Getter Jaani’s “Rockefeller Street”, which went viral on the platform in 2018 and has since been used in over two million videos. Let’s not forget that Armenia’s entry in 2022 by Rosa Linn with “Snap” gained over a billion views on the platform. Finally, Norway’s entry last year gained significant worldwide publicity months before the competition week, where it secured fifth place.

Eurovision 2024: Croatia’s Second Rehearsal!

We are on the 5th day of rehearsals and the second rehearsal for the countries of the first semi-final have started. Next up is one of bookers’ favourite, Baby Lasagna from Croatia, with “Rim Tim Tagi Dim“.

Who is Baby Lagsana?

Marko Purišić or with the stage name Baby Lasagna was born on 5 July 1995 in Umag of Croatia. He is a singer-songwriter and music producer. The artist wanted to follow his mother’s steps because she was a teacher among other family members and he expressed that he would have most likely become a teacher too if he had not decided to pursue a musical career instead. He did, however, work as a children’s assistant in elementary school for a year until quitting to study public relations in Zagreb. Baby Lagsania had previously also studied tourism and sound engineering. From 2011 to 2016 and from 2018 to 2022, Lagsania served as the guitarist for the Croatian rock band, Manntra. The band also participated in Dora 2019, securing the fourth position with the song “In the Shadows” with a total of 12 points.

Five years later he returned at Dora as a solo artist, which he won Dora and became the current representative of Croatia at the song contest. Rim Tim Tagi Dim is a self-described as a humorous song about the economic emigration of young Croatians, it was written solely by the artist in his bedroom.

The Rehearsal

As we saw in his first rehearsal, the staging is quite similar to the Croatian National Selection. Baby Lasagna wears giant frilly sleeves, a traditional costume among with make up in his eyes and a chocker. The overall performance has been polished up for Malmö Arena, the LED wall has changed but the main idea from Dora has been still there, the dancing neon cats make an appearance right at the end.

The dance moves also have changed, but there is not a major change on that. Once again, there are big smoke jets during the violin part of the song and in each chorus there are fire jets and cracker fireworks before the last bridge.

Eurovision 2024: Which rehearsal had the most views on the first day?

Yesterday, the big moment we’ve all been waiting for has arrived! Rehearsals began with the first seven countries of the first semi-final taking the stage.

However, as we know on TikTok, all the first rehearsals are uploaded. Apart from their performances, we’ll also get a sneak peek backstage before they take the stage for the first time in a video of about one minute.

One of the many features of TikTok is the ability to add songs to each user’s video creation. However, the TikTok algorithm is usually able to detect the song used in the video, assign it to the correct track, and then include it in the total number of videos where that sound has been used. Based on this capability, the most popular songs before rehearsals were from the Netherlands and Italy. Will they receive the same promotion as before?

In less than 24 hours (April 28, 2024, time 17:20 CET), since the first clip from the rehearsals was uploaded, we have a indicative sample of which rehearsal was favored by the audience (here it should be noted that the videos were uploaded one after the other with a one and a half hour interval and there was a significant delay in their publication).

The rehearsals that had the most views are:

  1. Poland: LUNAThe Tower – 711.3 thousand views
  2. Ukraine: alyona alyona & Jerry HeilTeressa & Maria – 608.1 thousand views
  3. Serbia: Teya DoraRamonda – 606.7 thousand views
  4. Croatia: Baby Lasagna Rim Tim Tagi Dim – 484.7 thousand views
  5. Ireland: Bambie ThugDoomsday Blue – 208.7 thousand views
  6. Cyprus: Silia KapsisLiar -195.8 thousand views
  7. Lithiania: Silvester BeltLuktelk – 193 thousand views

With this small sample, we can infer that:

  • Poland’s performance possibly appealed to fans, with the caveat that the stage presence was a surprise – either positively or negatively.
  • The rehearsals of Ukraine and Serbia also gained huge popularity, surpassing the following four positions in views, demonstrating their strength in the semifinal.
  • Croatia, as one of the major favorites of the competition, did not gather particularly high views, although fans and betting companies have placed it at the top for victory, resulting in the stage presence not making enough of an impression.
  • Similarly, Lithuania did not impress fans at all, as it maintained the same appearance as its national final.

TikTok has played a significant role in the success of Eurovision songs in recent years. For example, Duncan Laurence’s winning entry “Arcade” became a global hit a year after winning the competition when it was used in over a million videos on TikTok. Eurovision 2024: Croatia’s First Rehearsal!

Closing the first half of the Semi-Final 1 – and today’s rehearsals – is Croatia with Baby Lagsana taking the stage for his first rehearsal, with his song Rim Tim Tagi Dim.

Who is Baby Lagsania?

Marko Purišić or with the stage name Baby Lasagna was born on 5 July 1995 in Umag of Croatia. He is a singer-songwriter and music producer. The artist wanted to follow his mother’s steps because she was a teacher among other family members and he expressed that he would have most likely become a teacher too if he had not decided to pursue a musical career instead. He did, however, work as a children’s assistant in elementary school for a year until quitting to study public relations in Zagreb. Rim Tim Tagi Dim is a self-described as a humorous song about the economic emigration of young Croatians, it was written solely by the artist in his bedroom.

The Rehearsal

Unfortunately this year, accredited journalists don’t get the chance to watch the first and second rehearsals, so we only get the information and content that the organizers officially release to the public.

The staging is quite similar to the Croatian National Selection. Baby Lasagnia wears giant frilly sleeves, a traditional costume among with make up in his eyes and a chocker. The overall performance has been polished up for Malmö Arena, the LED wall has changed but the main idea from Dora has been still there, the dancing neon cats make an appearance right at the end.

The dance moves also have changed, but there is not a major change on that. There are big smoke jets during the violin part of the song and in each chorus there are fire jets and cracker fireworks before the last bridge. Croatia’s performance was the biggest pyro display of the day by far.

Below you can watch a small clip from the Croatian first rehearsal, once it’s published on TikTok:

Croatia: Baby Lasagna Rehearsing for Eurovision 2024!

Shortly after his victory in Dora 2024, Croatia’s representative at this year’s Eurovision, Baby Lasagna, has begun rehearsals for Malmö.

In fact, from the photos released to the public, there won’t be major differences from Baby Lasagna’s appearance in the national final to the Eurovision stage.

Baby Lasagna with his song “Rim Tim Tagi Dim,” swept the national final of the country for Eurovision 2024! Croatia is currently leading the betting odds for victory in this year’s competition.

Croatia will perform in the first half of the first semifinal on May 7th.

Croatia: Käärijä’s reaction on Baby Lasagna’s “RIM TIM TAGI DIM”!

This Sunday, Baby Lasagna was crowned the winner of Dora 2024 and therefore Croatia’s representative in Eurovision 2024 with his song “RIM TIM TAGI DIM“. Even before the national selection, “RIM TIM TAGI DIM” caught the fandom’s attention leading Croatia to rise on the betting odds. As it was expected, Baby Lasagna won Dora 2024 with a landslide and will fly to Malmö.

However, there are no few commenting on how similar “RIM TIM TAGI DIM” sounds and looks compared to last year’s runner up, Käärijä, especially following Baby Lasagna’s performance in Dora. On a short video posted on TikTok displaying both Käärijä’s and Baby Lasagna’s performances, Käärijä commented the following:

Same vibe but its not the same! I love this crazy croatin song

The aforementioned comment of Käärijä was posted by Baby Lasagna on his Instagram story, while he considers this comment as an honor.

At the moment Baby Lasagna is one of the hot favorites to win the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, as he is currently placed second on the betting odds. Croatia will perform at the first half of the first semi-final on May 7.

Croatia: Rim Tim Tagi Dim Copyright Issue for Baby Lasagna?

You read in our previous article, the issue that has arisen with the song Baby Lasagna, will represent Croatia at Eurovision 2024. Part of Rim Tim Tagi Dim is identical to Espectro, a demo by dj Adrián de la Vega. The DJ spoke to X’s Spanish account, Espace, saying that he is investigating the copyright issue that may exist and concerns the part of the two songs that are similar.

Adrián de la Vega’s Espectro has been around for 3 years at X. That is, it preceded Baby Lasagna’s Rim Tim Tagi Dim. It is not uncommon for an artist to have purchased a music sample from a creator. But from what it seems and based on Adrián de la Vega’s reaction, there is no such case here. The dj told Espace:

I am investigating the copyright issue with an expert. The sample in question was a portion of the song, in which i hold copyright.

Apart from the issue of copyright, there is also a question regarding the regulations of the competition, since a significant part of the Croatian entry has been in official circulation for three years on the web.

You can listen and draw your own conclusions. After the 3rd minute exactly:

Baby Lasagna won a landslide victory in Dora 2024, Croatia’s national final for Eurovision and so with the song Rim Tim Tagi Dim, he will represent his country in Malmö. In fact, it is already considered one of the favorites, since Croatia is in second place in the betting for winning Eurovision 2024.

We await the development of this matter. We will update you with any news!
