Poland: With Justyna Steczkowska to Malmö?

Eurovision 2024 appears to be turning into an all-star event. Along with Slimane for France and Olly Alexander for the United Kingdom, a former Eurovision representative’s name may now be added to the list.

There appears to be widespread speculation in Poland that Justyna Steczkowska, beloved by the Polish audience, is preparing for Eurovision. Justyna Steczkowska is no stranger to Eurovision fans, having previously represented Poland with her song “Sama” in 1995.

The Polish artist has been stating for a long time that she is ready to return to Eurovision. The 1995 representative recently revealed that she already has a song ready for next year’s competition, but she is simply awaiting Polish Television’s decision on the pre-selection for Eurovision 2024.

Her new song will be released on December 29 and has now officially confirmed that she will submit it to a potential polish preselection.

Justyna’s new hit and the production team

Justyna Steczkowska’s Eurovision entry is titled “WITCH-ER Tarohoro” and was created in collaboration with Hotelem Torino, who are also behind “Superhero” with which Viki Gabor won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2019 as well as “Somebody” by Sara James, the Polish entry and second-winner in Junior Eurovision 2021. The diva emphasizes that her new single will be very different from anything she has previously released. The track will contain Slavic elements, as she specifically mentions that:

With this song I want to tell you about our Slavic strength, courage and extraordinary energy that is enchanted in music and words. (…) This song contains our primal power of creation, creativity and true power.

Poland in Eurovision 2024

Up to this date, there is no official statement regarding TVP’s choice or selection method for Eurovision 2024. Following the elections in October, there were also major changes made inside TVP causing uncertainty on Poland’s fate in Eurovision. Regardless the ongoing backlash in Poland there is no indication that the recent events will interfere with the country’s participation in Eurovision 2024.

A Eurovision record on the way?

In case that Justyna competes in the national preselection and steps on the Eurovision stage in Malmö, the artist will break a Eurovision record and set a new one. The record for the longest gap between Eurovision appearances is currently held by Anna Vissi. Anna Vissi participated for Greece in 1980 and Cyprus in 1982 and went for her third appearance in the contest twenty-four years later, in 2006. Following Anna Vissi, the second-longest gap belongs to Jean-Claude Pascal, who returned to the Eurovision stage in 1981, twenty years after his victory in 1961. The top-three is concluded by Koit Toome (Estonia 1998,2017) and Tommy Korberg (Sweden 1969,1988) with a gap of nineteen years.

It is obvious that in case Justyna represents Poland in Eurovision 2024, she will then hold this record with the extraordinary gap of twenty-nine years between her two participations.
