Latvia: The country’s parliament will discuss a potential withdrawal from Eurovision!

Latvia managed to qualify for the Grand Final of Eurovision this year, for the first time since 2016, but even that wasn’t enough for a large amount of citizens, that are calling for the country’s withdrawal from the Contest!

The country’s withdrawal will be discussed in the Parliament of Latvia, following a citizens’ initiative. In detail, more than 11,300 signatures of Latvian citizens were collected on the ManaBalss platform, in favour of Latvia’s withdrawal from Eurovision and the allocation of money to sports.

Since the proposal has been signed by more than 10,000 citizens, it will be discussed in the Saeima, the legislative body of the Republic of Latvia. The author of the initiative, Kristaps Bogdanović, states:
“I call for Latvia’s participation in “Eurovision” to be terminated. It is doubtful whether this event significantly contributes to the image and reputation of Latvia. People who participate there tend to behave obscenely, and this is also stated as the norm. There are European countries that do not participate in Eurovision for various reasons, including financial reasons, and Latvia should better invest its already problematic public funding where we have clear benefits – in sports. Therefore, I urge you to end Latvia’s participation in Eurovision, not to hold “Supernova” and to redirect funding towards sports. It is unacceptable for the Biathlon Federation to have to collect donations for the World Championship, which is definitely more important than Eurovision.”
This year, Latvia was represented by Dons and the song “Hollow”, ending up in 16th place, while also bringing his country back to the Grand Final:
