Luxembourg: Josh Island submitted an entry for the country’s national selection!

Luxembourg, one of the founding countries of Eurovision, is officially back for Eurovision 2024. RTL’s return is intended to be spectacular. A national selection in planned in order to select its first Eurovision act in over 30 years. The preliminary auditions are over and we might have the name of one potential candidate.

Josh Island, a Luxembourg-based artist, recently gave an interview to “Luxembourg Times“, discussing about his upcoming debut album and his ongoing plans for 2024.

In order to promote his debut album “In My Head“, Josh has booked more than 16 dates inside and outside of Luxembourg. Malmö could also be a stop of his tour too, as he mentions that:

I’ve already applied [for Eurovision]! I can’t tell you which song I’ve applied with, but I can tell you that there will be a final televised competition at Rockhal on 27 January where Luxembourg’s song entry for Eurovision gets voted for.

Josh Island has also some connection to Eurovision as he has closely cooperated with Black Mamba, the Portuguese representatives in 2021. He opened their shows in The Netherlands and since then their relationship remains close.

We now have the very first information about an artist that submitted an entry to the Luxembourgish national selection. Meanwhile, more details and the full list of candidates are expected in the coming months.

Monaco: Is there a possible scenario for a comeback | TVMonaco starts its broadcasting today!

Today at 19:15 CET, TVMonaco will begin its operations for the first time. The agenda of the new public broadcaster will include news, live sports, talk shows and documentaries and will also become a part of TV5 Monde, which signifies that its content will be broadcasted in 200 countries. The openness of the new broadcaster to the world, consecutively raises the question on whether it can also bring Monaco back to Eurovision.

Can Monaco return to Eurovision soon?

The deadline for the Principality of Monaco to announce its participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 is next Friday, September 15, and the channel has until then to confirm their participation.

However, before it confirms its participation, TVMonaco must first seek for EBU membership and be recognized by the Union before December 2023 and therefore replace TCM.

Monaco’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest was only possible through the Télé Monte-Carlo (TMC) channel. The latter stated in previous years that it lacked the financial resources to consider participating in Eurovision following administrative changes in 2010. In 2022, the channel ceased to be an EBU member.

It makes sense to assume that Monaco will return to the competition in the 2025 edition if the channel requests its entry into the EBU and takes into account that it wants to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest. This way, Monaco would have the time needed to prepare its entry in time for the contest.

In 2022, the Government of the Principality of Monaco included a $100,000 budget item to “start the Principality’s application to the Eurovision Song Contest 2023” in the documents that presented the budget for the year 2022, however months later it was revealed that the country would not participate.

Monaco is being absent from the competition for 17 years. Considering the comeback of Luxembourg after 30 years of absence, the return of Monaco doesn’t seem that impossible now!

Cyprus: The artist will be revealed next week!

No matter if Belgium “caught up” faster with the artist announcement for Eurovision 2024, the Cypriot Broadcaster is almost ready for the official announcement of the artist that will represent the country in next year’s contest. The announcement will take place next week and we will get to know the second artist that will fly to Malmö, barring anything unforeseen.

As you first read through EurovisionFun, RIK, after the inglorious end of Fame Story as a selection method for the representative of Cyprus in the contest, the broadcaster directly put forward the backup plan they had already planned. Thus, both the artist and the song will be selected by an internal selection in which Cyprus will participate in the 68th Eurovision Song Contest.

Everything is ready, even some pending procedures have been resolved and so it’s a matter of time for the official announcement of RIK. Although, the announcement will not only include the artist reveal but we do not want to spoil anything further and ruin the suprise of the Cypriot delegation, where they hope for a good result, even higher than the last attempt with Andrew Lambrou who ended up in the 12th place with the song “Break A Broken Heart”.

However, the preperation of the Cypriot delegation for Malmö has been already intesive, having started their planning even for the stage presence.

A few more days of patience and soon all our questions will be answered!

Belgium: Mustii’s song will be released in February!

Yesterday, RTBF, the French-language broadcaster from Belgium, was the first to announce its artist for Eurovision 2024. 33 years-old Mustii will be the one to fly the Belgian flag to Malmö, a well known artist in the French-speaking part of Belgium.

During an interview with VRT, Mustii announced that his Eurovision entry will be released in February. Meanwhile, he got into details about his Eurovision participation as well as what to expect from him.

According to Mustii, RTBF contacted him, bearing in mind that he is also a judge on Drag Race Belgium, which is produced by RTBF.

Mustii mentions that:

My style evolves into pop with a dark edge. I have influences from new wave and rock, but they remain pop albums. I contrast pop with fragile subjects, I like to play with them. My last album, for example, was a homage to my uncle who had schizophrenia.

He also says that:

My idea is to go to the Eurovision Song Contest with my own DNA. I don’t want to lie, I want to be sincere and authentic. I don’t want to create a fake character.[…] But I have been working in the studio for a while. I also want the song to be part of an album and not just a random song for the Eurovision Song Contest.

So, we can expect that Mustii will keep his artistic identity on the Eurovision stage and his song will be similar to his music style.

Belgium seeks to keep its qualification streak and respectable results. Gustaph’s unexpected success in Liverpool seems that was the motivating force that led to an as early as possible and professional selection procedure.

Israel: Auditions for “The Next Star” are about to start soon!

The search for the successor of Noa Kirel has just started for Israel. Despite the great success of the internal selection method in 2023, which came up with one of Israel’s biggest stars and a third place result, KAN announced that it will choose its next Eurovision artist through “The Next Star”. “The Next Star” format was first used in 2015 with Eden Alene being the last Israeli participant to be chosen through this show. During these editions, Israel managed to qualify to the Grand Final each year and even won the contest in 2018 with Netta Barzilai.

Auditions for the show will start soon

Open preliminary auditions for “The Next Star” will take place on Sunday 10th of September, at the Tel Aviv Expo and Convention Centre in Pavilion 2, where Eurovision was hosted in 2019.

These preliminary auditions are open to all Israeli participants aged 16 and above, and will require all aspirants to prepare two songs to be sung acapella. Acoustic instruments, such as guitars, can also be used. These preliminary auditions will not be televised, though candidates are warned that video from the day, such as images of the waiting crowd, will be utilized in the show “The Next Star.”

Those who prove to be successful on the day will advance to the show’s auditions, which will be hosted by Assi Azar(Eurovision 2019 host) and Rotem Sela, as they have done since 2014. On the judging panel we will also see Shiri Maimon, who represented Israel in 2005.

Recorded auditions will take place in late September and the show is set to premiere in November.

22 years-old Noa Kirel represented Israel this year in Liverpool with her song “Unicorn“, taking the third place and soon becoming a Eurovision sensation!

Ukraine: Submissions for Vidbir 2024 are now open!

Ukraine has started its preparations for Vidbir 2024, the Ukrainian national selection for Eurovision. Today, August 30, the applications opened for artists to submit their entries and will remain open until the 22nd of October. Those who are interested in representing Ukraine in Eurovision 2024 shall apply through this form on the eurovision.ua website.

Dmytro Shurov(Pianoboy) remains as the music producer of Vidbir and calls for participants to apply:

The acceptance of applications for participation in the National Selection for Eurovision 2024 has started! I want to appeal to all the musicians of our country: you have almost eight weeks to create your own victory song. The song of the year, which will represent Ukraine on the global international stage, will break all the charts and win the first place at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. I’m really looking forward to your songs, your talent and energy are very much needed in our country now.

Changes in Vidbir format

Vidbir 2024 will see an online vote in order to determine a finalist on the selection. Specifically, Shurov stated that:

This year, I will not only choose the finalists of the National Selection. A vote will be held among the longlisters that I don’t have enough space on the finalist list, which was my biggest pain last year. Spectators will choose their favorite, who will get a chance to compete for victory in the final.

Rules and conditions of Vidbir 2024

  • The National Selection is open to artists above the age of 16. As in past years, bands and solo performers with a maximum band size of six individuals may apply to participate.
  • The selection criteria state that a song may be up to three minutes long. Participants must perform their own original songs that were produced entirely on their own. A song that is applying to be in the National Selection must also not have been previously released or performed in public.
  • There is no restriction on the amount of songs one participant may submit. Additionally, submission of demo versions is permitted by the National Selection regulations.

Vidbir 2024 stages

  • A longlist of participants who will continue to compete in the National Selection will be created in line with the results of the national preliminary selection. There will be up to 20 acts on the list. Participants on the longlist are required to pass via an audition, in which they must physically take part.
  • By November 20, a list of up to 10 artists will be chosen as finalists based on the results of the auditions.
  • A rating online poll will be conducted to choose one more finalist from the longlist participants who did not advance to the list of finals. By December 29, the whole list of finalists will be made public.
  • The final of the National Selection will take place in February 2024 and will be televised. As in previous years, the winner of the National Selection will be determined by the results of the jury and audience votes. Ukrainians will select the members of the final’s star jury, through online voting.

Ukraine despite being in war, managed to host an impressive national selection last year, which crowned TVORCHI as a winner and therefore gave them the ticket to Liverpool. TVORCHI with their song “Heart of Steel” achieved the 6th place, securing the third consecutive top ten result for Ukraine.
