Portugal: Interview with Jonas | From Eurovision 2008 to Festival da Canção 2022! (Video)

After the announcement of his candidacy for this year’s portuguese national final, Festival da Canção 2022, Jonas speaks exclusively to EurovisionFun‘s Apostolos Bogiannos and Paschalis Barmpoutis.

Jonas is one of the candidates of the portuguese national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 and will try to represent his country with the song “Pontas Soltas”.

I’m releasing an album. I’m starting now. I did musical theater, but my main thing is being a fado singer. It feels like I’m beginning again after all these years. It’s an opportunity for people to know about my music.
Pontas soltas is a protuguese expression about something unsolved. It’s about a relationship that ended in the wrong leaving many issues to be solved. It’s a recurring theme in fado music. This kind of music has mysticism. The song was written especially for FdC and I was invited by RTP to participate.

Apart from being a singer, Jonas is also a choreographer. This is something that can help him with his staging in the national final:

I can’t say much about my staging. It’s a surprise. It’s very connected with fado and with dance. I’m very nervous to be compared to other artists. I’m trying not to see anything on the Internet. I like everything to be united and not seen separately.

Despite being anxious by the procedure, Jonas has already some favorites among the festival’s songs. He prefers the songs by Pongo & Tristany and Milhanas.

FdC changed a lot after the victory of Salvador Sobral. Salvador Sobral was an unusual phenomenon in ESC. Noone expected a very simple and fragile song with just him alone on stage would win. It’s good to see all these different styles and songs. It’s much richer now with huge names of the portuguese music, it gives me more will to participate in FdC.

His favorite portuguese entry is “Desfolhada” by Simone de Oliveira (1969) and of course “Senhora do mar” by Vânia Fernandes (2008), where he participated as a back vocalist. Among other Eurovision entries he likes Netta‘s song (Israel 2018).

Being a back vocalist in the portuguese entry in 2008, Jonas spoke about his experience in the contest and about their pleasant coexistence with the greek delegation.

Just before the end of the interview, Jonas sang a part of his song a capella for the readers of eurovisionfun.

Watch the whole interview with Jonas in the video that follows:

Greece: In the island of Symi will take place the video clip of the song!

The choice of ERT and the artistic team for the location where the video clip of the Greek entry will be shot is the beautiful and closed to the borders, Symi.

An end of Greece, in which, however, the heart of Hellenism beats loudly, will be the shooting of the video clip of Amanda’s song for Eurovision 2022. Next week Amanda together with Kostas Karydas (the director), members of the Greek delegation, but also a crew of ERT will travel to Symi in order to film the video clip.

As we revealed to you in our previous article, ERT wanted the Greek element to be seen through the video clip. But do not wait to see a video clip type postcard, in the video there will be a story that will unfold in the beautiful landscapes of Symi. This is the image that Greece will send to millions of viewers this year through the video clip of its participation in the contest. ERT’s message to many recipients is clear. On a remote island that can be just 10 minutes from Turkey and 10 hours from Athens, will shoot the video clip of our nation’s participation in Eurovision 2022.

Amanda arrives in Athens on Sunday and will leave as we mentioned above immediately for Symi, where she will stay for three days. ERT with a crew that will have in Symi and through Studio 4, but also its news bulletins will inform us about the shooting with a rich background and related videos.

Greece continues to be in the top ten of bets, while Amanda is in the highest position in the betting table in relation to the countries that have announced an artist or a song, filling smiles and optimism in ERT’s offices. Despite the positive messages, however, all those involved keep their tones low, but preparing in the background every little detail for the Greek entry this year, hoping that in May the result will justify them.

Stay tuned to Eurovisionfun for all the developments regarding the Greek participation in Eurovision 2022!

Sanremo 2022: La Rappresentante di Lista won the impressions in the today’s press rehearsal!

Less than 24 hours are left for the start of the 72nd Sanremo Song Festival, through which of course Italy’s entry in Eurovision 2022 will be selected. Earlier we saw the artists walking on the red carpet (which is green) outside the Teatro Ariston, while the general rehearsal for the journalists took place, who gave the last predictions before the start of the festival tomorrow night.

La Rappresentante di Lista (LRDL) the favorite according to journalists

Accredited journalists who cover all the days of the festival from the roof of the Teatro Ariston, but also participate in the final results, as they determine about 1/3 of the voting, reported today that Ciao Ciao of La Rappresentante di Lista was what stood out as the big favorite to win.

The popular pop band from Palermo, had impressed the journalists from the first moment, who listened to the studio versions of the candidate songs of the festival, but they were also impressed by the live performance that they watched for the first time today. According to what they revealed in their responses, LRDL have a lot of energy in their appearance, while the small dance they perform in the chorus also stands out. So we are looking forward to their appearance tomorrow at Ariston, in order to see if the journalists were right in everything they have said so far.

“No” for Eurovision from three artists!

Three of the candidates for Sanremo 2022 have already revealed that they are not interested in being represented at the Eurovision Song Contest in May. Specifically, the veteran Iva Zanicchi, the youth favorite Ana Mena and the already eurostar Emma Marone, stated in their interviews today that they will not represent Italy in Eurovision 2022, even if they win the Sanremo festival.

Impressive appearances on the “red” carpet

Sanremo, however, returns to normalcy, since after last year it was held without the presence of the audience, but also without the parallel events, which gather lights, flashes and impressive appearances on the streets of the small town of Liguria. This year San Remo is really reminiscent of similar events before pandemic.

So, after the good news about the 100% fullness on the stands of the Teatro Ariston, today the opening ceremony of the festival took place normally, with the 24 Campioni artists wearing their goodies and being photographed on the streets of San Remo, walking the red carpet , but it was green! Below you can see some of the appearances:

Tomorrow night the curtain opens at the Teatro Ariston with the first night of the 72nd Sanremo Song Festival, where we will listen to the first 12 candidate songs. Of course Eurovisionfun loves Sanremo and will bring you all week long what is happening there!

Estonia: Stefan speaks exclusively at Eurovision Fun!

He is one of the favorites of Eesti Laul 2022 and with his song “Hope” he is on the race  to represent Estonia at Eurovision 2022 in Turin, Italy.

Stefan speaks exclusively at Eurovision Fun and we are really very happy to host him!

-Stefan, welcome to Eurovision Fun and thank you very much for this interview! First we would like you to tell us some things about you, so that our readers can get to know you better.

-Hey Eurovision Fun! I’m glad that you contacted me. I am super excited about Eesti Laul and HOPEfully I’ll get to go to Eurovision (did you see what I did there).

Well, if I would have to describe myself then first thing is that I am a singer with an Armenian roots. I enjoy cooking and writing songs. I think I’d say I am a positive person. I like to have fun and thats why I hate corona so much. Because for me I need people to have fun, even though I enjoy being alone. It all depends.

-How did you decide to participate in Eesti Laul?

-Hope was actually written 2 years ago and I felt like this year was this songs turn to shine.

-This is your 4th time in the national final. Which of your entries do you love the most?

-All of those times were amazing.

-What is the message you want to convey with “Hope”?

-“Hope” was inspired by the situation around the world such as corona, black lives matter, war in Armenia where my relatives were, politics.. and so on. So it all inspired me to seek hope and fight back and not give up in these tough times. Because If you lose your hope then there is no point of living. Hope will be the last thing to die. So I want people to realise that everything is possible only if you won’t lose your hope.

-What should we expect from you on the stage for the semi final?

-I don’t want to get your hopes up but at the same time I think you wont be dissapointed.

-Do you have any favorites from this year’s Eesti Laul? Do you feel threatened by someone?

-I like Merilin Mälk’s song the most. I can’t really say it depends on their performances.

– Which is your favorite Estonian entry from Eurovision?

-Stig Rästa and Elina Born “Goodbye to yesterday” and Ott Leppland “Kuula”

-Which is your favorite Eurovision 2021 entry?

-Italy obviously. They were so rebellious!

-Have you ever visited Greece?

-I haven’t visited Greece but it is one of my biggest dreams to come and see this wonderful place. But I have tasted Greek food and it is outstanding!

Stefan, thank you very much! Good luck to you and we “Hope” to see you in Turin!

-Thank you very much! All the best!

Cyprus: Marvin Dietmann & Dan Shipton to Stage Eurovision 2022 Performance!

Today, Marvin Dietmann posted on his Instagram stories that he and Dan Shipton will be the artistic team behind the Cypriot participation for Eurovision 2022.

Unlike other years, RIK has been late in announcing the artist who will represent Cyprus at the upcoming Eurovision, as the right song must be found first and then the singer.

What has been mentioned by the Cypriot delegation is that this year’s participation will have a Cypriot color. It does not necessarily indicate the participation of a Cypriot artist as a representative but more broadly in the creative team of the song.

So far, RIK has not reached either the song or the artist who will be in Turin, however the search continues.

Cyprus finished in 16th place last year, with Elena Tsagrinou performing the song “El Diablo”.

Ireland: Interview with Brooke Scullion | The Voice UK, Meghan Trainor and her competing at the first Irish national final in years! (Video)

After the announcement of her participation in this year’s Irish national final, at The Late Late Eurovision Special, presented by Ryan Tubridy, Brooke Scullion talks exclusively to EurovisionFun and Andreas Papayiannakis.

Brooke is one of the finalists of the Irish national final for Eurovision 2022, bidding to represent her country with the song “That’s Rich”.

I wrote the song January of 2020, with Izzy Warner and Carl Zane. I hadn’t realised it, but actually Izzy Warner and Carl Zane wrote the song for the Netflix Eurovision movie. Yeah, we didn’t intend on making the song for Eurovision. We basically had 80s in our minds, we wanted to go for an 80s genre but make it modern. So when we created the song, it wasn’t really something that I wanted to let go of immediately. I wanted to give the song the biggest platform that I could. I wanted everyone to hear it. And fall in love with it like I have fallen in love with it. So, we put it forward for Eurovision and now I’m a finalist to be selected for Ireland.

But how did she end up submitting “That’s Rich” to RTÉ and then getting selected as one of the six finalists to compete, in the hopes of representing Ireland at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest?

It was just discussed one day, we had been putting it forward to different labels, we guess there was interest but it didn’t feel right. Then my manager called me and told me they changed the rules this year. Usually Ireland selects their own song behind closed doors, so this is the first time since 2015 that the public will vote. So Ronan, my manager, called me and told me Brooke there are open entries for Eurovision this year. I said “GO GO GO GO for it”! I watched Eurovision ever since I was a baby. So from there, we just let it go and it took a few months for them to contact us back. And when we found out that was the craziest day. i had no idea what I was in for.

Brooke is obviously excited about her competing at this year’s national final for Ireland, The Late Late Eurovision Special:

Yeah it’s pretty intense! I feel like I’m putting a lot of pressure on myself. Which is also not a bad thing because I feel like I took it really really seriously. And the amount of effort we’ve put in and the performance thats gonna come out of this is gonna be pretty cool. So, regardless of the result on Friday the 4th of February, I’m gonna be really proud
of what I put out there. And I hope that the Irish public will be able to see that I’ve put in a lot of effort into this and they’ll put their trust on me to go forward to Turin.

Her song got leaked by fans, almost half a day before its official release. That’s why she decided, along with her team, to release it a few hours earlier than expected.

So, my song was meant to come out at 00:00 GMT. And someone found out that it came out in New Zealand about 12 hours before the actual release. So, some of the fans leaked it, like what happened wasn’t intentional. Their response was absolutely crazy. People are going mental on Twitter. And it’s so funny for me to watch, because I’ve never had that much of an interest on any of my songs before. Especially for something that I’ve written. I feel like the song connects with so many people because as soon as it comes on, it is immediate. The guitar, the bass hooks you and you nearly just already start thinking “Whats this? That’s familiar but also so different to anything that is out right now!”. So it was crazy that the Eurovision fans are so on the ball. That is so much fun and exciting for me.

Brooke was a contestant at The Voice UK 2020, got placed 3rd and her coach was the global megastar Meghan Trainor. Meghan congratulated her on her social media, by posting a shout-out kind of story, on her Instagram account.

Meghan to me is honestly such a good friend. Like, I haven’t been able to visit her because of, obviously, the pandemic. But she is in contact and she just texted me “I’m so proud of you!” this is unbelievable. It’s so exciting for me. I’ve had a year of just creeping in the background and hiding all my music and people thought that I’ve disappeared. Now I’ve come out and I’m gonna have four songs coming out this year. Meghan has listened to them and approved them. If you met Meghan, you wouldn’t believe that this is a massive popstar. She is so down to earth. Her family are so important to her at what she does, they’re her whole team. Her mummy and her daddy are like her management. It’s really cool what her team is to her and I suppose, if I was gonna emulate anyone’s career, this would be Meghan’s, because she’s a good role model for children. So I really feel she is such a good person to have on your side and I’m really lucky to have her.

She comments that, she would be really proud, if she managed to get selected to represent Ireland this year and feels really confident about her song, that she could somehow turnaround the mishap of Ireland either getting placed low in the scoreboard, or not qualifying to the finals, over the last years:

I feel like Ireland holds a really prestigious amount of honour in the Eurovision history. We hold different records for Johnny Logan winning twice and then writing the song for Linda Martin, obviously there’s so much there. Now, of course in the last few years we haven’t been making it to the final or things just haven’t really gone our way. But I feel like my song could really bring a scent to enter this new exciting conversation and competition. I feel like, if I am selected we have a really good shot of qualifying this year because it’s something that’s not expected from Ireland. Everyone is taken back that this is even an entry. And I feel like it crosses the line between commercial and could-be-in-the-charts and it also hits home and qualifies for Eurovision. I feel like it’s a very strong song, it has potential for the staging, the colours, everything, it would really do well for the country.

With regards to the staging of her song, at the national final of the 4th of February, she hinted us a few things about how her stage performance will feel like:

Of course I do have plans for the staging, but I don’t know, it’s like, okay how do I do this without spoiling too much of the performance. My song is really high energy and very cute. It’s like, I don’t know if I should leak it with you, but we’re going for nearly slumber party vibes, like when you’re with your friends cause that’s when you would listen to the song. It’s such an “I’m over you” kind of song, it’s a breakup song but it’s at the last stage of the breakup, where you’re finally happy and you thank that person for treating you so badly, that it was easy to get over them. So it’s “bye bye fool OH!”. It’s all very cute and coming of age, I would say. But the staging is very high energy and my body is used a lot. So I don’t want that to take a toll on my voice, so I’m doing a lot of training. I’m running on the treadmill while singing it, just a lot of cardio. Trying to get myself ready. And it’s difficult and it’s taking a lot of energy out of me, but Im loving every minute of it because I know what the angle could be.

Her favourite Irish acts at the contest are the Irish duo Jedward (2011, 2012) but also, as they’re both from Derry, Dana (1970). Amongst other countries’ representatives, she loves Alexander Rybak (Norway 2009), Loreen (Sweden 2012) and Lordi (Finland 2006) who, as she mentions, “they scared the life out of her” at the age of seven.

A few moments before the end of the interview, Brooke sang for us a small part of her song acapella.

You can watch the entire exclusive interview with Brooke at the video below:

Romania: Interview with Eliza G| From Italy ends up representing Romania with a song about the value of love! (Video)

After the announcement of her participation in this year’s Romanian national final, Selecția Națională 2022, Eliza G talks exclusively to EurovisionFun reporter, Apostolis Matamis.

Eliza is one of the artists that will compete in the hopes of winning a ticket for the final of the Romanian national selection process for Eurovision 2022 and is bidding to represent her country with the song “The Other Half of Me”.

Even though she is a permanent resident of Italy, she will attempt to represent Romania in Turin instead, which is her home country.

I am connected with Romania. The first year was in 2019, when I got invited at a Romanian festival. I went without any great expectations, but I won the first prize! I am really proud of that, it was one of the most amazing moments of my life. And now I said “Why not?”. I have a strong bond with Romania, I have lots of friends there. When there was an open call for foreign artists, I said, “I’ll go” and here I am, I am at the semi-final. After all, these two countries are deeply connected with each other. More than one million Romanians live in Italy and vice versa. They’re sister countries!

Last week, she recorded her performance at the studios of TVR and she feels absolutely satisfied about the final outcome of her song, “The Other Half of Me”.

The song is partly in Italian and partly in English. It is a love song, but it is not exclusively related to some love affair but also in family and friendly relations. Generally speaking, it talks about our relationship with any person we might care for or feel close to. People, in their lives, they fight, they make mistakes and choose the wrong path sometimes. And they end up being scared that they might lose someone really close to them, when it’s actually too late already and they’re already gone. Then you realise what they were really worth. And in my song, I talk about that kind of situation, when you’ve lost a person and you are in the place where you used to live, all alone and then you realise how much you miss them, feeling it so intensely, as they were your other half. With my song, I want to emphasise on the hope that the mistakes we make, can show how that first stage of a forthcoming loss can feel like.

The initial version of the song, that was written entirely in Italian by two really renowned Italian composers, was kept by Eliza in her vault. Later on, a composer from the United Kingdom assisted in writing the english version of “The Other Half of Me” and then it was decided that a mixed version should be formed, containing both languages, which was not initially targeting the Eurovision Song Contest. The decision to submit the song to the national selection process of Romania, came a while later.

Romania is a country with really broad horizons and is welcoming artists from all over the world, so I thought it is a great opportunity. I am so proud of this. And maybe, one of my next steps in terms of music, would be a future participation at the festival of Sanremo!

Apart from Romania, in 2021 she took part in a popular Albanian festival, where she says she’s gained a lot of experience.

She mentions that she has listened to all the songs of her contestants.

I have listened to all the songs, but I would prefer not to compare any, because it would be so unfair. We are all here for the same reason. What I would like to point out is that there are lots of nice songs, exceptional artists and I am really curious to see how they will sound like when performed live, because that is the moment when you actually understand what kind of feelings they can pull out of you.

In case she wins, Eliza will participate at the Eurovision Song Contest which will be held at the country where she currently lives:

I hope the timing is right. It would be really interesting. I have a lot of friends here. As an Italian woman, it would be really interesting if I had the chance to present a song partly in Italian, in my own country, representing Romania.

Her favourite Italian entry is the one of Diodato (2020) while from the entire contest she loves the song of Salvador Sobral (Portugal 2017).

A few moments before the end of the interview, Eliza sang for us a small part of her song acapella.

You can watch the entire exclusive interview with Eliza at the video below:

You can listen to “The Other Half of Me“, Eliza’s song for Selecția Națională 2022, at the video below!
