Germany: Listen to the songs of the finalists of “Ich will zum ESC”!

As we have already informed you in our previous articles, the five episodes of “Ich will zum ESC” have wrapped up. It is a six-episode competition show and its winner will ultimately secure a place on “Deutsche Finale”, Germany’s national selection, through which the country will select its representative for the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest.

As the process takes place, the contestants will be supported by their two coaches, Rea Garvey and the winner of Eurovision 2014, Conchita Wurst. During those five episodes, the artists chose to sing either covers or songs they wrote themselves, whereas, on the final episode on February 8th they will perform the song with which, if they win “Ich will zum ESC”, they will participate on “Deutsche Finale” on February 16th.

Today, the songs of the finalists were published and we will see them on stage on the last episode of ‘Ich will zum ESC”.

Listen to the songs here:
  1. Anne – Yellow Brick Road”
  2. Luca – “Farben neuer Tage”
  3. Bibiane – Walk You Home Safe”

Eurovision 2024: The Semi-Final Allocation Draw Results!

Malmö with a very nice event hosted a few minutes ago the draw for the semi-finals of the 68th Eurovision Song Contest.

The analyzes of the fans and not only, have been on fire for a few minutes now. Since the theories based on the pre-history of the countries in the competition, it is a first insight into how passable the qualification to the final is or not. In other words, it’s time to make our predictions, about who will go through to the final and who are the favorites to say goodbye to Malmö early…

The presenters and the handover ceremony

Presenters of the Eurovision 2024 semi-final draw were Pernilla Månsson Colt and Farah Abadi. It is worth mentioning that Pernilla Månsson Colt was also the presenter of the corresponding draw in 2013, eleven years ago when Malmö hosted the Eurovision Song Contest for the last time. Both of them are part of the SVT staff, being some of the most beloved faces of the Swedish state broadcaster.

During the draw, the ceremony of handing over and accepting the emblem of the contest took place. The mayor of Liverpool, Steven Rotheram, formally handed over the “keys to the event” to the mayor of Malmö, Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh.

Draw Procedure

Big 5 and Sweden

With the big winner of last year’s competition, Sweden, directly in the final, along with the Big 5 (UK, France, Italy, Germany, Spain), the first part of the draw determined the semi-final that the direct finalists would vote for.

Will vote in the 1st Semi-Final:

  • Sweden
  • United Kingdom
  • Germany

Will vote in the 2nd Semi-Final:

  • Spain
  • Italy
  • France

In the semi-final that the six aforementioned countries were drawn to broadcast and vote for, the video from their dress rehearsal will also be shown. This was done at Eurovision 2016 for the first time, for reasons of equal exposure of the countries directly in the final and the countries that qualify from the semi-finals. Essentially, viewers see each entry twice during the shows.

Semi-Final Allocation Draw

The allocation draw for the two semi-finals had two parts. In the first part the 31 countries participating in the semi-finals were drawn in which of the two they will compete in. Fifteen countries will compete in the first semi-final and sixteen in the second semi-final.

In the second part, each country learned whether it will appear in the first or second half of the semi-final in which it will compete. The exact order of appearance will be determined by the EBU and the show’s producers at a later date.

Eurovision 2024: Tonight the Allocation Draw!

At 19:00 CET and live from Malmö, Sweden, the draw for the Eurovision 2024 semi-finals will take place tonight.

During today’s event, there will also be a handover of the event’s banner from the city of Liverpool to the city of Malmö. For this reason, both the Mayor of Liverpool, Steven Rotheram, and the Mayor of the Swedish city, Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh, will be present at today’s draw.

The hosts

The hosts of tonight’s draw for the semi-finals of the 68th Eurovision Song Contest will be Pernilla Månsson Colt and Farah Abadi. It is worth mentioning that Pernilla Månsson Colt was the presenter of the equivalent draw in 2013, eleven years ago when Malmö hosted the Eurovision Song Contest for the last time.

The draw procedure

The first part of the draw will determine which semi-final will be broadcast and voted for by each of the six countries that are directly in the final on 11 May (Sweden, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and the United Kingdom).

The second part of the draw will determine which semi-final and which half the other 31 participating countries will compete in. As in recent years, the exact order of appearance will be determined by the event producers at a later date.

The 31 countries have been divided into five pots, based on historical voting patterns as calculated by Eurovision’s official voting partner, Digame.

Drawing countries from different pots aims to reduce the likelihood of so-called neighbour voting and increases the suspense in the semi-finals.

Eurovision 2024: The Semi-final allocation pots!

The Semi-Final Allocation Draw 2024 will take place tomorrow Tuesday 30 January at 19:00 CET live from Malmo, alongside a ceremony which sees the Host City insignia pass from previous hosts Liverpool to Malmo.

https://youtu.be/Q_-2hMEq5sk

The draw will be hosted by Pernilla Månsson Colt and Farah Abadi and fans will be able to watch on the official Eurovision YouTube channel.

The Allocation Draw will determine whether countries participate in the First Semi-Final (Tuesday 7 May at 21:00 CEST) or the Second Semi-Final (Thursday 9 May at 21:00 CEST). Also randomly allocated is whether a country will perform in the first or second half of the Semi-Final they’ve drawn.

Semi-Final Allocation Draw: How does it work?

Sweden as the Host Country and reigning champion respectively, along with the other 6 members of the so-called ‘Big 6’ participating countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and United Kingdom) do not compete in the Semi-Finals, but their domestic audiences do get to vote in one of them… so before the competing countries are allocated a place in a Semi-Final, it will be randomly determined which of the Semi-Finals the Big 6 will each be allowed to vote on.

The next part of the draw will determine in which Semi-Final and in which half of the respective Semi-Final the other 31 participating countries will perform in.

Drawing countries from different pots helps to reduce the chance of so-called neighbourly voting and increases suspense in the Semi-Finals. You can get a good idea of how it will all work by watching the 2022 Allocation Draw on the official Eurovision YouTube channel.

The Eurovision Song Contest is due to take place on 7, 9 and 11 May 2024 in Malmo, Sweden, who won the Contest thanks to Loreen winning in 2023.

Germany: Everything that happened in the first three episodes of “Ich will zum ESC”!

As we’ve previously informed you, these days, the first three episodes of “Ich will zum ESC” aired. The series is a competitive TV show consisting of six episodes, whose winner will get a wildcard to compete in the German national final, “Das Deutsche Finale”, in which the representative for Eurovision 2024 will be selected.

The contestants will be backed by two coaches in this process, Rea Garvey, and Eurovision 2014 winner, Conchita Wurst. In the first five episodes will perform covers, or songs of their own, while in the last episode, they will sing the song with which they will compete in “Das Deutsche Finale” if they win.

Episode Three

The artists that took part in this episode are named below, along the song they chose to perform:

  1. Lyn – Calm After the Storm
  2. Flo – What Was I Made For

The artist that managed to qualify is Flo.

In this way, the teams of the two coaches are as follows:

  • Team Rea: Béranger, Bibiane, Esther, Paul und Florian

The ten artists were then divided in four groups:

  • Flo & Bibiane: Dancing On My Own (Version von Calum Scott)
  • Esther, Béranger & Paul: You Get What You Give

As we know, the vocal coaches are Yvonne Ambrée and Katrin Mickiewicz . The two teams are divided into one group of two and two groups of three. They are assigned a song to try out in just one hour. Not everyone can do it, especially the lyrics, so when the songs are presented, some lyrics are in their hands or the lyrics are written on a large cardboard.

After the performances of all ten artists in the next episode, we will find out which artists will have to leave from “Ich will zum ESC”.

Germany: MDR is to host the ESC preliminaries in 2025!

Year after year, Germany fails at the Eurovision Song Contest – not least the fault of NDR, which is responsible for the German preliminary round of the Eurovision Song Contest. Now, apparently, consequences are being drawn: As reported by Rolling Stone, the MDR will host it from 2025.

Those responsible at NDR have to admit to themselves that even with new concepts, everything remained the same every year, the Eurovision Eurovision participants could hardly convince anyone of themselves on the Eurovision stages, because the Eurovision noticeably lacked courage and creativity. The ARD executives are now said to have made the decision to entrust the more music-oriented broadcaster MDR with the organization of the Eurovision preliminary decision. MDR‘s head of entertainment, Peter Dreckmann, also acts as ARD‘s music coordinator. The change was allegedly even received with relief at NDR.

The fact that NDR will continue to be responsible for hosting the Eurovision preliminary round in 2024 is said to be due to the fact that funding from the MDR was not initially secured. Although there are possibilities of special financing for certain broadcast formats, this would first have to be approved by the program directors of the MDR, which probably did not happen in time. Costs of two million euros are expected for the preliminary round and the MDR already has to pay attention to its expenses anyway. Florian Silbereisen has already felt this, the red pencil was also applied to his schlager shows.

Neither spokespersons for NDR nor MDR wanted to deny this at this time. Those responsible said:

“Statements about the future belong in the realm of speculation, this is currently not an issue for the MDR.”

This leaves it open on how and where the preliminary round of the Eurovision Song Contest will take place in the future, but it does not dispel the rumours either.

It is also unclear whether Barbara Schöneberger will continue to be booked as a presenter for the preliminary show in 2025. At MDR, Florian Silbereisen is considered the best, at least when it comes to the station’s music shows.

Unfortunately, Lord Of The Lost did not succeed in overturning the tables for Germany, a country that struggles a lot in its Eurovision course for the past ten editions. Indicatively, in the last ten editions, Germany has finished last four times and second-last three times.

Germany: Ben Dolic signs an open letter to the EBU against Israel!

It seems like the statement of EBU that confirms that KAN and Israel can normally participate to the contest has sparked reactions among the fans but not only.

A few hours later, the (almost) Eurovision Song Contest 2020 representative of Germany, Ben Dolic, signed an open letter to the EBU and made a post on X (Twitter) about it, which you can see below:

“The continued acts of violence by the state of Israel cannot be supported under any circumstances. As an artist, a past Eurovision participant and as a human being, I will not support the EBU’s decision to allow a state that has committed so many atrocities to tens of thousands of civilians participate in the Eurovision Song Contest.

There is no logical explanation for a music competition with the main message of spreading love to have a connection with a place that has acted against their main message in such horrific ways.”

There have been calls to ban Israel from Eurovision 2024. In Finland, 1300 artists signed a petition asking for Israel to be removed. The British representative Olly Alexander has also shared in public his opinion against Israel. Also just recently Montaigne signed an open letter to the EBU asking the ban of Israel from the contest, just as Ben did.

Germany originally planned to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 with the song “Violent Thing” written by Borislav Milanov, Peter St. James, Dag Lundberg, Jimmy Thorén and Connor Martin and performed by Ben Dolic, but then the contest was cancelled due to the Coronavirus outbreak. You can listen to “Violent Thing” on the video down below:
