Norway: The MGP 2024 entry selection procedure!

Norway’s representative and song for the future Eurovision Song Contest will be chosen through Melodi Grand Prix 2024, whose submission deadline closed on August 31. As a result, NRK, the country’s national broadcaster, is now moving to the subsequent step of the procedure, that of assessment.

The head of Norway’s delegation provided more details on the procedure for choosing the entries that will be qualifying for MGP 2024 and claim Norway’s representation in Malmö.

A special NRK committee listened to the songs last week and selected some of them for the next stage of the procedure. The performers were called yesterday to perform live in front of the committee. The final list of candidates will start to take shape in the next weeks after the evaluation of the live performances, and it is anticipated that it will be made public in early January 2024.

This year, Norway was represented by Alessandra and the song “Queen of Kings”. With a total of 268 points, Alessandra came in fifth place overall and third in the televote. Will Norway be able to maintain its success and secure a third consecutive top 10 finish?

Eurovision 2024: Did Stig Karlsen succeed in reducing the power of juries?

As we have previously informed you, the Eurovision Song Contest’s workshop took place today in Berlin.

During this workshop representatives of the -already confirmed- competing broadcasters had the opportunity to interact and discuss on new ideas regarding the contest.

Stig Karlsen’s “mission”

On behalf of Norway, Stig Karlsen was present. Karlsen serves as the head of the Norwegian delegation to the Eurovision Song Contest. A month prior to the workshop, Karlsen stated that the Norwegian Television is planning on proposing a change of the voting format and specifically a change in the ratio of jury-public voting results. He suggested that a 30% or 40% percent of jury’s participation in the final result would be essential as a balancing factor and a boost for public’s interest, who often sees its favorite entry not winning or placing low.

Does the aforementioned indicate that a discussion regarding a possible change in the voting format has been made? Well, the reduction of jury’s power in the contest for sure would benefit Norway, a country that has experienced conflicting results between jury and public vote for the past years. The highlight was in 2019, when Norway won the public vote only to finish 18th in the jury voting. We can assume that Karlsen brought this topic on today’s meeting and made his proposal among Eurovision executives.

A possible change in the jury-public vote ration is indeed a hot topic among Eurovision fans due to this year’s Finnish entry finishing second overall, regardless taking the first place on public voting with a margin of 133 points. Considering EBU’s approach on the contest, eager to try new ideas and bring changes when needed, it might be the time for this specific change.

Norway: The rumored artists for MGP 2024!

The new Eurovision season has officially kicked off and so have the rumors about the 2024 contest. Today, a list of the potential Melodi Grand Prix 2024 artists was published on Twitter.

It is important to note that the post specifically states that this is not an official list. Furthermore, the aforementioned artists could potentially participate not only as performers, but also as songwriters.

Eurovision 2024: Which country wants less power to the Juries?

Norway does not like at all the fact that every year the amount of points from the juries is smaller than that of the tele-voting, thus opening a big discussion on this matter. The cause of course was the huge discrepancy that occurred this year, in the voting of the television audience in relation to that of the national juries, after the latter overturned the final result and gave the victory to Loreen and Tatoo.

Stig Karlsen, head of the Norwegian delegation to the Eurovision contest, has revealed that his country’s public television is going to propose changing the scoring system, by limiting the voting of the juries.

In his interview on the Eurovíziós Podcast, Stig Karlsen justifies the above, saying that he believes that people’s interest in the contest will decrease if they see that their favorite song does not take first place.

Although he considers the existence of critical committees necessary, he suggests a change of the balance to 40% or even 30% of the final result, with the remaining percentage determined by the voting of the television audience.

“The juries system at Eurovision should definitely be evaluated and the discussion is very welcome. There has been a difference (in the results) between the jury and the public vote in the past, but this year it was extremely wide. The people obviously had a different winner. The fact that a jury of 185 people should have as much power as millions of viewers is questionable”

At this point we remind you that Finland gained 376 points in the tele-voting, with Loreen receiving respectively only 243. On the other hand Sweden received 340 points, with Finland gaining only 150 in the jury voting.

The whole jury system has had a great repercussion on Norway during the last year. The highlight was the 2019 Norwegian entry with KEiiNO who despite winning the tele-voting at the grand final, the juries allocated them only 18th!

Any change to the contest’s voting system must first be approved by the Reference Group, which is expected to convene next January to approve the regulations for Eurovision 2024.

Eurovision 2024 Norway: Submissions for MGP are now open!

Norway seems to have already set in train the preparations for the Eurovision 2024 contest as submissions for the country’s national selection,the Melodi Grand Prix,which has been running actively since 1960,are now open and are going to remain so until August 31st.Artists are now welcome to submit their songs for next year’s MGP.

A drastic rule change,however,suggests that all competing songs shall not be released before January 2024.

Eurovision 2023: Here is the reason why Norway and Denmark opened their respective semi-finals….

Almost 20 days after the completion of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest,the Head of Contest Twan van Nieuwenhuijze elaborates on the reason why Norway and Denmark opened the first and the second semi-final respectively.

The Head of Contest stated on the Dutch podcast Ding-A-Dong that both entries are very child-friendly and cheerful,accommodating for the contest’s needs for a joyful opening:

“Alessandra from Norway and Reiley from Denmark are both very child-friendly openers. Not only because they are both young performers, but also because of the way the act looked. Cheerful, up-tempo, those are good reasons to have someone open.”

Nevetheless,not both entries managed to yield fruitable results.Although Norway’s Alessandra managed to bring Norway back to the top 5 with her song “Queen of Kings” (achieving a top-3 televoting result),Denmark’s Reiley failed to catch the audience’s eye with his song “Breaking My Heart” and,thus,did not manage to qualify for the Grand Final,earning only 6 points from Iceland.

Norway: The most possible days for Melodi Grand Prix 2024!

Through a research conducted by the website escnorge, several announcements were found from NRK, Norway’s public television, regarding the search for professionals for Melodi Grand Prix 2024. These positions are Producer, Producer for the artists’ appearances, content creator and arists coordinator for MGP 2024.

The most interesting about these announcements is that three of them mention the end date of the each job. The content creator’s last day is Sunday, February 4th, while the artist coordinator’s last day is Sunday, February 18th. This helps us estimate that the MGP will take place in February.

Since the artist coordinator has a deadline of February 18th, we can believe that the MGP 2024 final will take place on Saturday, February 10th.

The previous winner of Melodi Grand Prix and Norway’s representative at Eurovision 2023, was Alessandra Mele with the song “Queen of Kings” and placed 5th in the Grand Final:

Norway: Τhe viewing figures of the Eurovision Grand Final 2023!

In Norway, 86% of viewers watched the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 Grand Final live from Liverpool.

A total of 1,076,000 viewers watched the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 Grand Final live on NRK on Saturday night. This number represents a drop of 153,000 viewers compared to 2022, however, the show still recorded an 86% share of viewers, down 3% compared to 2022. The final’s overall audience share is the lowest Eurovision audience share in Norway since the country failed to qualify in 2016.

The viewing figures for Eurovision 2023 in Norway were as follows:

First Semi-Final – 604,000 – 58%  share
Second Semi-Final – 438,000 – 56%  share
Grand Final – 1,076,000 viewers – 86% share

Norway was represented by Alessandra Mele at Eurovision 2023 with the song “Queen of Kings”. She placed 5th in the final with 268 points.

Norway: HoD says Eurovision jury system should be re-evaluated!

After the Eurovision Final on Saturday, Stig Karlsen, Head of the Norwegian Delegation, said the current jury voting system should be re-evaluated.

Following the storm of reactions after the announcement of this year’s results, driven mainly by the difference in the vote of the televote (Finland) and the juries (Sweden), Mr Karlsen explained to Dagbladet that:

“The jury system in Eurovision definitely needs to be evaluated and the debate is very welcome. There has been a difference between the jury and the public vote in the past as well, but this year it became extremely distinctive. The people obviously had a different winner. The fact that a jury of 185 people should have as much power as millions of TV viewers is questionable”

Norway was represented by Alessandra with the song “Queen of kings”. Alessandra finished 17th in the jury voting, scoring 52 points, while getting the third highest score from the televote, taking the fifth place overall with a total of 268 points.
