Eurovision 2023: Azerbaijan’s Second Rehearsal!

Next act to get on the stage in M&S Arena are TuralTuranX, representing Azerbaijan, with their song “Tell Me More”.

Who are TuralTuranX?

TuralTuranX are a sibling male duo named Tural and Turan. The two brothers are 22 years old and they are descibed as street musicians from Zaqatala. When they saw for their first time a piano in school, they were so bascinated by it that they secretly wrote songs on it. Then their father bought them a used sunthesizer. They also learned how to play the guitar. TuralTuranX first appeared in schools and some events, however, after the death of their father, they temporarily stopped music.

The choice of participation was made from the National Broadcaster among five artists who competed with songs created by composers orifonating only from Azerbaijan.

The Rehearsal

Unfortunately this year, accredited journalists don’t get the chance to watch the first and second rehearsals, so we only get the information and content that the organizers officially release to the public.

As we know, Tural and Turan are standing on a heart-shaped podium centre stage. The duet wears matching green and purple suits. This combination sets a perfect harmony for this staging. There’s also a colour fade from black and white to colour, it’s a really nice effect at the beginning of the song. During the song, the duet shares the screen with the split screen effect.

Eurovision 2023: Second Rehearsal of Sweden!

Today is the fourth day of rehearsals, the day when the countries participating in the First Semi Final will take over the stage for their second rehearsal at M&S Bank Arena, in Liverpool!

Next up on stage for their second rehearsal is Sweden and Loreen with the song “Tattoo“.

Who is Loreen?

Lorine Zineb Nora Talhaoui, known as Loreen, is a Swedish singer, songwriter, and this year’s winner of Melodifestivalen. Interested in becoming a musician, Loreen took part in the Idol 2004 television competition, finishing fourth. The following year she released her first single, “The Snake“, with the band Rob’n’Raz and became a television presenter on TV400. While working as a segment producer and director for several Swedish reality TV shows, she entered Melodifestivalen 2011 with the song “My Heart Is Refusing Me“, which became a top 10 hit in Sweden. She also had top 20 hits in Sweden with the singles “Crying Out Your Name” (2012) and her Melodifestivalen 2017 entry “Statements“.

Representing Sweden, she won the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 with her entry “Euphoria“, which topped the charts in numerous European countries. She will represent Sweden in Eurovision for a second time in 2023 with Tattoo which broke into the charts globally in many countries.

The Rehearsal

Loreen and her light box are back on stage – we were really interested to see the big screen version of this, as so much of it is filmed in close-up.

Sarah Louise Bennett/EBU

The stage and the LED screen is a sea of swirling smoke, and the whole effect is incredibly intense. It’s WAY more intense and dramatic than it looks in the arena – Loreen is NOT here to play.

Sarah Louise Bennett/EBU

It’s Loreen, so obviously this performance is tighter than that catsuit and more polished than those terrifyingly long nails. Sounds incredible, looks incredible – the perfect finish to a brilliant first day of rehearsals.

Eurovision 2023: Second Rehearsal of Moldova!

Today is the fourth day of rehearsals, the day when the countries participating in the First Semi Final will take over the stage for their second rehearsal at M&S Bank Arena, in Liverpool!

Next up on stage for their second rehearsal is Moldova and Pasha Parfeny with the song “Soarele Şi Luna“.

Who is Pasha Parfeny?

Eurovision runs through Pasha Parfeni’s veins, having been involved with multiple national final songs in Moldova, as well as representing the nation at the Eurovision Song Contest back in 2012, where he finished 11th.

The following year, he joined forces with his wife Yuliana to compose Moldova’s entry O Mie for Aliona MoonAliona had been a backing vocalist for Pasha in 2012, and this time he took to the Eurovision stage to accompany her on the piano.

The Rehearsal

No changes from the first rehearsal, and great to see that the pounding bassline we felt in the arena comes across on the big screen too. There’s so much to love about this performance from Moldova  – the huge drums, Sergiu the epic flute guy, Pasha’s atmospheric vocals, the two backing singers with huge horned headdresses.

Sarah Louise Bennett/EBU

It’s the kind of ethno-banger we used to see a lot more often at Eurovision, and all together it creates a performance that’s pulsing through the arena floor. This is going to go BIG in the Liverpool arena next Tuesday.

Eurovision 2023: Second Rehearsal of Israel!

Today is the fourth day of rehearsals, the day when the countries participating in the First Semi Final will take over the stage for their second rehearsal at M&S Bank Arena, in Liverpool!

Next up on stage for their second rehearsal is Israel and Noa Kirel with the song “Unicorn“.

Who is Noa Kirel?

Noa Kirel is an Israeli singer, dancer and actress, with various musical accolades. She was the winner of the MTV Europe Music Awards for the best Israeli act between 2017 and 2022 and is one of the most critically acclaimed performers in the Israeli pop scene. Some notable milestones in her 7-year career include becoming a judge in Israel’s Got Talent in 2018 (and becoming, thus, the youngest judge ever at the age of 17), signing a contract with American record company Atlantic Records and opening Miss Universe 2021 with her song “Bad Little Thing”.

The Rehearsal

Watching Noa Kirel on the big screen is a totally different experience from in the arena.

Sarah Louise Bennett/EBU

Noa starts her performance in a huge box lit with LEDs, with some nice rotating camerawork and lots of strobe lighting. She’s supported by five backing dancers, all in matching black and pink wet-look costumes, and the whole routine is pop-video polished from start to finish.

Sarah Louise Bennett/EBU

‘I’ve got the power of a unicorn,’ sings Noa, and you’ll be delighted to hear we took the opportunity to research what specific powers unicorns have. It turns out their horns have healing properties, so we’ll be calling on Noa for all our backstage first aid needs.

The camerawork is amazing, and every one of her facial expressions is entirely fierce.

Eurovision 2023: Second Rehearsal of Switzerland!

Today is the fourth day of rehearsals, the day when the countries participating in the First Semi Final will take over the stage for their second rehearsal at M&S Bank Arena, in Liverpool!

Next up on stage for their second rehearsal is Switzerland and Remo Forrer with the song “Watergun“.

Who is Remo Forrer?

Remo, after a childhood of playing traditional folk music on the accordion in his little Swiss village of Hemberg, Remo moved onto the piano.

Given time he might have found fame with his accordion skills but it was his singing that landed him victory at The Voice of Switzerland 2020. He also triumphed in the German version of the music game show I Can See Your Voice.

The Rehearsal

No changes from Sunday’s first rehearsal that we could see, and still sounding great in the arena. “Watergun is a heartfelt ballad about the tragedy of war, and a universal call for peace.

It’s clear that Remo feels a real connection to these lyrics, and his vocal is beautiful. Staging-wise, he has four contemporary dancers (one is Ellinea Siampalis, dancer at several numbers in Melodifestivalen, who has Greek roots) and also dances himself, which we weren’t expecting.

Eurovision 2023: Second Rehearsal of Croatia!

Today is the fourth day of rehearsals, the day when the countries participating in the First Semi Final will take over the stage for their second rehearsal at M&S Bank Arena, in Liverpool!

Next up on stage for their second rehearsal is Croatia and Let 3 with the song “Mama ŠČ!“.

Who are Let 3?

Let 3 come from Rijeka, the birthplace of Croatia’s punk scene, where they quickly gained a reputation for merging energetic performances with live art, social commentary, over-the-top theatrics, and outlandish costumes.
Frontman Zoran Prodanović (Prlja) started out in the band Umjetnici Ulice, before joining with bass guitarist Damir Martinović (Mrle) to form Let 2 in 1986 (which eventually evolved into Let 3 when they added a new member).

This established and much-loved group have released 10 albums, one of which, Nečuveno (Unheard), quickly sold out despite the record being completely blank.

In Croatia the band are known for their provocative performances and are no strangers to shocking audiences by performing in the nude… we’ve no doubt Croatian broadcaster HRT are carefully going through the Eurovision rulebook with the boys right now.

The Rehearsal

It’s 2nd rehearsal time for Croatia’s Let 3, and it looks no less bonkers on the big screen than it did in the arena. It’s just…bigger. And brighter. Let 3 kick off with their trademark extravagant costumes, mind-bending graphics and high fashion hat/dress combos, and then for the final chorus they all strip down to their underwear and wave huge missiles.

Sarah Louise Bennett / EBU

The colours are more psychedelic. The removal of clothing is in high definition. They have an extensive track record of getting naked on stage, but they’ve kept it classy for a Sunday afternoon.

Chloe Hashemi / EBU

Let 3’s performance ends with the missiles emitting a shower of sparks over a group of men dancing in platform heels, vests and underpants.

Greece: “There are two changes we want to make”!

Greek representative Victor Vernicos spoke to the presenters of MEGA show Πάμε Δανάη via skype from Liverpool this morning. Victor was very satisfied and optimistic after the first rehearsal, while he revealed that the Greek delegation wants to make two changes to his appearance.

I feel great, I’m not too stressed. We are doing great with the team, we had the first rehearsal yesterday. As soon as I stepped into Liverpool, my energy went up to 200%! We are ready! I am the youngest representative in the contest this year, they go crazy and so do I when I remember it. The atmosphere is very nice, I have met many artists and I get along very well with all of them.

To Danae’s question about how the first rehearsal went and whether the Greek delegation is planning on making any changes, Victor answered:

Things went perfectly in the rehearsal, couldn’t have gone better. We also saw how it will look on TV. I will wear this outfit in the semi-final. There are two changes we will be making. Generally I don’t get stressed, everyone encourages me and everyone gives energy to others.

On Friday 5/5 Victor Vernicos will be having his second technical rehearsal on stage.

Eurovision 2023: Ireland’s Second Rehearsal!

The next band of the day is Wild Youth from Ireland! Singing about being young and one of a kind, will surely make us think better about our self-esteem. A quite festival appearance is about to start in 3…2…1…..

“We might be different, we might be unique”

Wild Youth

Wild Youth is an Irish indie rock group that originated in Dublin in 2016. Its members include David Whelan, Conor O’Donohoe, Ed Porter, and Callum McAdam. They will represent Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 with their song “We Are One”. The band has previously opened for famous artists such as Niall Horan, Lewis Capaldi, and Zara Larson. Conor O’Donohoe is the lead vocalist and primary songwriter of Wild Youth, while David Whelan plays the keyboard, Edward Porter is on the guitar, and Callum McAdam plays the drums. Wild Youth earned their place to represent Ireland through the Late Late Show, where they competed against several other acts, including one from Public Image Ltd.

The second rehearsal

Wild Youth’s performance appears to be a hit, with the band looking like they’re having a blast on stage. The Irish delegation should be pleased with the result. However, unlike the official video, the band isn’t wearing sequinned masks. Instead, lead singer Conor is dressed in a flashy gold catsuit with flared pants. The staging is the first of the day to feature stairs, arranged in a horseshoe shape with all the LEDs in use.

Sarah Louise Bennett / EBU

The entire performance is visually and sonically stunning. Pyrotechnics are also used, with large jets of flames shooting out from around the stage just before the final chorus. The use of pyrotechnics is quite impressive. It’s easy to imagine the crowd in the Liverpool Arena singing along to the uplifting chorus.

In the afternoon, after the completion of all the rehearsals, a video will be released with short excerpts from the television footage of all the second rehearsals!

Eurovision 2023: Portugal’s Second Rehearsal!

Hello Portugal! Mimicat can’t wait to entertain us with her folklore song. Her Portuguese heart is about to beat, and her rhythm influences us already.

“Diz-me lá se és meu”

(Tell me if you are mine)

Mimicat

Mimicat, whose real name is Marisa Isabel Lopes Mena, is a singer and songwriter from Portugal known for her pop and soul music. She will be representing Portugal in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 with her song “Ai coração”. Mimicat had previously participated in Festival da Canção 2001 under the stage name Izamena but did not make it past the semi-finals. She started singing and recording at the age of nine and gained recognition in 2014 with her debut album “For You”. This year, she is set to release a new album featuring “Ai Coração” which she co-produced with Luís Pereira. In addition to her music, Mimicat is a cat owner and her pet’s name is Brownie.

The second rehearsal

The second rehearsal is just as impressive as the first one. Mimicat’s dress, made entirely of feathers, stands out as the only one of its kind in this year’s Eurovision, with the color red being a recurring theme. The opening piano glissando gives a strong impression of the song “I Will Survive”, but this performance is pure musical theatre extravagance.

Chloe Hashemi / EBU

Compared to her Festival da Canção performance, the staging has been simplified, but the four backing dancers still bring plenty of energy. The lighting and costumes all follow the same red theme. Vocally, Mimicat sounds stunning, and the overall performance is a sophisticated and crowd-pleasing cabaret act, with the final note being particularly impressive.

Sarah Louise Bennett / EBU
