EBU: Code of Conduct for Participants with Mandatory Political Neutrality

During the Eurovision Song Contest, set to take place in Basel, artists are expected to have a specially designated space where they can retreat and relax without being filmed or recorded, as stated by the head of the competition, Bakel Walden, to the newspaper Sonntagsblick. Additionally, the EBU is expected to implement a code of conduct for participants, requiring political neutrality while they are on stage.

These actions are part of a broader effort to protect the well-being of participants and maintain calm among the delegations during the competition.

Walden emphasized that the organization has a duty to ensure the mental and physical health of the artists, something that will be taken seriously in the future.

Referring to the 2024 contest in Malmö, Walden noted that although the event was successful, certain issues must not be repeated, particularly regarding communication before, during, and after the competition. He also stressed the need to keep Eurovision as neutral as possible from political matters, stating that Eurovision cannot solve global conflicts and wars.

In Malmö, the contest was overshadowed by protests and calls for a boycott against Israel, due to the war in Gaza following the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023. Israeli artist Eden Golan mostly stayed in her hotel room for safety reasons and faced exclusion by other artists.

Finally, Walden addressed the importance of adhering to a code of conduct for participants, stressing mutual understanding and respect among the contestants. While he asked participants to maintain a neutral stance on stage, outside of performances, they are free to express their views.

Nemo: “I Felt Very Alone” – The Israel Controversy and Lack of Support at Eurovision

Nemo, this year’s Eurovision winner, stated that the contest’s organizers did not provide enough support to participants caught up in the controversy over Israel’s participation. In an interview with the BBC, the 25-year-old Swiss artist said they felt “very alone” during the competition and expressed hope that better support structures will be in place in the future. “I really hope they have things in place for the next year,” they said.

Ahead of Eurovision, there were calls for Israel to be banned due to military actions in Gaza, and protests took place in Malmö, Sweden, where the contest was hosted. Nemo and other artists were pressured to boycott the event, while Israel’s representative, Eden Golan, reportedly received death threats.

Nemo, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, described the backstage atmosphere as “quite tense,” with ongoing investigations by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). “They told us they would get back to us, but they haven’t yet. It’s a shame that the EBU takes so long, in my honest opinion,” they commented.

When asked if the organizers did enough to support the artists, Nemo responded, “No, I don’t think so. There were times I felt very alone, and it took a long time for them to get back to artists when they reached out.”

The EBU responded in a statement, acknowledging the artists’ experiences and promising changes, including a duty of care protocol for future participants.

Despite the controversy, Nemo emphasized the importance of Eurovision as a platform for cultural exchange. “At the core of this contest, I think it’s an exchange of different cultures and coming together. I really believe in that sentiment,” they said.

As the first non-binary artist to win Eurovision, Nemo’s victory was a significant moment for the LGBTQ community. “Only after Eurovision did I start to realize the scale of what this moment meant to so many people,” they noted, adding that the win gave hope to many queer people who felt seen and understood.

  • Nemo: Best Swiss Artist
  • Angelina Mango: Best Italian Artist
  • Slimane: Best French Artist

Last year’s edition of the MTV EMA Awards was ultimately cancelled due to the Israel-Hamas war for security reasons. This year, the Awards will take place in Manchester on November 10.

Nemo: “I never considered withdrawing from Eurovision. However, I’m still waiting on the EBU to respond to some of the behind-the-scenes happenings”

A few months after handing Switzerland its third Eurovision victory, Nemo talked on their experience on this year’s contest and denied the rumours that wanted them to withdraw just hours before the grand final. They did, however, highlight their dissatisfaction with a number of occurrences connected to the Israeli delegation and said that they are waiting an official response from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

Following their absence from the flag parade of the grand final dress rehearsal, rumours circulated that the Greek, Swiss, and Irish contestants were pulling out. There were speculations that the reason for this absence was a disagreement between one of the Israeli delegation members and the artists in question.

However, Nemo denied the rumors that they wanted to consider the scenario of his withdrawal from the contest. More specifically, they stated:

I never considered withdrawing from the final. However, I am still awaiting an official response from the EBU regarding certain events that have taken place behind the scenes.

The organizers have not yet dealt with these incidents.

As an artist, it’s difficult for me to express my position on the matter.

Basel Faces Eurovision Uncertainty: Referendum Could Change Hosting Plans

A small conservative party has initiated a referendum to prevent the Eurovision Song Contest from taking place in Basel next year.

The Federal Democratic Union, which has no representatives in the Basel parliament, is working to gather 2,000 signatures by the end of October. This is to force a referendum against the Basel City government’s plan to spend CHF 35 million on hosting the event.

The Federal Democratic Union is known for its Christian fundamentalist views and has only 3,000 members nationwide. The party is opposed to abortion, homosexuality, and fertility treatments.

If enough signatures are collected, a vote could potentially be held as soon as November 24th. If the referendum succeeds, a new venue will need to be found for the Eurovision Song Contest.
