Sweden: First look at this year’s Melodifestivalen stage!

The design of this year’s Melodifestivalen stage has been completed and SVT unveiled a sketch/working image of how the final stage looks like, before it gets constructed at Malmö Arena in Malmö . It can now be seen in a post at the official social media accounts of the contest and SVT.

Gigantic LED walls with light and video in all directions, glamorous party atmosphere as well as modern, glittery elegance – and a closeness between artists and audience. That’s what the creators of Melodifestivalen‘s stage and light design want to achieve. Scenographer Viktor Brattström, who together with the lighting design team with Fredrik Stormby at the helm has developed this year’s stage and light design says:

“The stage can offer great variety and the arena feeling will be elegant and festive, both joy and excitement are promised. Everyone will recognize themselves in the wonderful and lively party feeling. That feeling is always part of Melodifestivalen’s identity.”

LED and all are the concepts of the season. Two angled LED walls with integrated luminaires flank the stage, which rests on a 72 square metre LED floor. Thanks to a high resolution of the LED floor, there are a record number of pixels to play with, and it becomes a fun and useful surface. The experience of the different contributions can be greatly enhanced, according to the design team.

To increase the closeness between the audience and the performers, a narrow playing area is placed in the stalls, some distance from the stage, and creates alternative positions for the Melodifestivalen host. A variety of lamps in the stalls further helps to blur the boundary between stage and audience.

Artistic and technical work hand in hand

The prerequisites for the year have been, among other things, that design and construction should work longer over time, and that everything should also fit in smaller arenas. During the design work, great focus has been placed on the big picture. Included in this is everything from the content of the LED screens (in addition to the contributions), lighting, Green Room and interludes, to the host’s clothes and more. For example, the design team has chosen powder pink as one of the shades that is repeated throughout the arena design, on everything from balloons to the lighting over the audience.

Working with the whole in this way is both artistic and technical work that requires close and dynamic teamwork between some of Melodifestivalen‘s key creators – lighting designers, scenographers, image producers, other producers, number creators and project managers. All of them develop a number of basic practical and design prerequisites from their respective areas. Viktor Brattström adds:

“A challenge this year has been to become more compact without losing sight of the grandeur and dynamism. We believe we have succeeded. I am grateful to have been a part of this event and its development over the years.”

Sweden: The lyrics of the songs competing at the first heat of Melodifestivalen 2024!

The upcoming heat of Melodifestivalen 2024 will take place next Saturday, February the 3rd and will take place at Malmö Arena in Malmö.

Sweden: Zara Larsson interested in being a Eurovision 2024 interval! | What about Melodifestivalen?

Zara Larsson is one of the biggest representatives of Swedish pop worldwide.  She is turning 26 at the end of this year, but she already has a vast career, made her international breakthrough at the age of 18 and she has been involved with acting lately, making her debut at a Netflix film A part of You.

She has declared herself as a big fan of Melodifestivalen and Eurovision and has expressed her wish in the past to take part in Melodifestivalen as an interlude act. Now speaking at Sveriges Radio and Fredrik Hilmered, superstar Zara Larsson just expressed that she eagerly wants to go to Eurovision as one of the interval acts of this year’s contest to be held in Malmö, Sweden:

“I’m eager to do an interlude. Being on Eurovision would be really awesome. It’s by far the biggest program an artist can be a part of.”

But when asked about competing in Melodifestivalen, she sounds quite firm:

“I will never compete in Melodifestivalen. It’s more than just getting the chance to use the awesome stage. It’s the ultimate privilege for me as an artist.”

Has she been asked to do an interlude? She responds:

“I’ve told my management to hound them. We’ll see how it turns out. That would be super exciting.”

Her new album “Venus” gets released on the 9th of February and she sets off for her European tour on the 16th of the same month. No wonder why she’s left a big tour gap between the 16th of March and the 31st of May, if one takes a closer look to her tour dates. She seems to be really keen on participating at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest that is hosted by her home country, Sweden, after Loreen did a double and won last year in Liverpool with the song “Tattoo“.

Sweden: The aim is a back-to-back victory, according to project manager Anders Wistbacka!

Today morning, SVT unveiled Carina Berg as the host of this year’s shows of Melodifestivalen, on a press conference at the headquarters of SVT in Stockholm, Sweden!

Melodifestivalen’s project manager Anders Wistbacka made the announcement of the presenter, but before doing so he made quite an interesting statement:

“For the first time for Sweden, we want to win this contest twice in a row!”

This of course creates high expectations in the fanbase about the selection of the thirty songs that will compete in this year’s heats in the hopes of representing Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden.

He then commented on the selection of Carina as this year’s host of Melodifestivalen:

“For this year’s Melodifestivalen, we wanted a presenter with a capital P. We wanted a professional, experienced and loved by the viewers. Someone who can lead the show with warm, glamorous and humorous tone. We put the question to Carina Berg and she said yes! I am very happy and proud and know that we have found the right one.”

Do you believe that Sweden can manage to win back-to-back and surpass Ireland in number of victories? Let us know in the comments section below!

Sweden: Carina Berg will officially host Melodifestivalen 2024!

A few moments ago, SVT revealed the host of the shows of Melodifestivalen 2024, on their press release! It is now known that Björn Gustafsson will not be one of the leaders of the shows of the tour. Carina Berg is now officially announced as the host the shows of the tour this year!

Who is Carina Berg?

Carina Berg, has since 2012 been associated with Discovery and Kanal 5 and has made a variety of series, by herself or with partner Christine Meltzer, such as “Berg & Meltzer in America“, “A Job for Berg“, “Berg & Meltzer at the Oscars“, “The World’s Toughest Job with Carina Berg” and “Berg’s Dream House“.

In August, however, it became known that Berg had left his exclusive contract with Kanal 5 to freelance and host the Childhood Cancer Gala on Viaplay and TV3.

However, will Björn Gustafsson be involved at all in the shows of this year’s Swedish national selection process? As you may have already read here, Björn will take part in this year’s SVT production as a sidekick of Carina Berg, according to Aftonbladet. However this information is not yet confirmed by SVT.

Who is Björn Gustafsson

In 2008, Carina Berg was married to Kristian Luuk, who was the leader of the Eurovision Song Contest at the time. Björn Gustafsson was his sidekick and in an acclaimed intermission he performed his “Kärlekssång till Carina Berg” (“Lovesong to Carina Berg“) where he tried to convince her to dump her husband for him. He also presented the Swedish vote the very same year, at the Eurovision Song Contest.

The song became the comedian’s and actor’s big breakthrough and since then he has been named Sweden‘s funniest man, and made both Swedish and international careers with films such as “Spy” and roles in the TV series “People of earth“, “Clark” and the TV4 series about Ture Sventon.

Sweden: Björn Gustafsson will not lead Melodifestivalen!

In one of our previous articles two months ago, we wrote about Carina Berg and Björn Gustafsson who would reportedly lead the shows of Melodifestivalen this year, according to Aftonbladet.

A while ago, Aftonbladet’s Torbjörn Ek revealed that tomorrow, on the SVT press conference where the Melodifestivalen 2024 leads will be presented, only Carina Berg will be presented as the host of Melodifestivalen 2024. She won’t have Björn Gustafsson with her.

Host announcement delayed

It’s been 19 years since SVT took this long to confirm the hosts of the competition. With the exception of the pandemic year 2021 when it happened on January 5, the presenters have in the vast majority of cases been presented in NovemberFive years even as early as September. Today Aftonbladet reveals that the popular comedian will participate in Melodifestivalen throughout the tour, but as a sidekick, not as a host.

A sidekick has less responsibility

Being a sidekick to the host of the Melodifestivalen means a little less responsibility. And possibly also a little less fuss. Björn Gustafsson also does not have to participate in the otherwise obligatory press conferences or tour activities such as parties for six weeks. Also as a sidekick, the rules are also somewhat more relaxed when it comes to advertising collaborations. Something that can be quite crucial for a person who in recent years has lent his face and his sense of humor in countless commercials, which are still frequently circulating on advertising-funded TV channels. According to what Aftonbladet has learned, SVT and Björn Gustafsson have had a number of discussions during the autumn.

The fact that this year’s Melodifestivalen was initially intended to be led by two hosts, Carina and Björn, is confirmed by several people with good insight. But Björn’s role has been toned down. He doesn’t want to be a host. He doesn’t want to take up so much space. So it has been agreed to reduce his role compared to what was said at the beginning. So, those who have been looking forward to the super duo Carina and Björn in Melodifestivalen should not worry cause according to an Aftonbladet‘s usually very reliable informant Björn and Carina really want to work together. Björn will be there and he will be kind, cozy and very funny, he just won’t be the host.

Sweden: No Auto-Tune in Melodifestivalen, says producer Karin Gunnarsson!

The organizers of the Norwegian equivalent to Melodifestivalen, Melodi Grand Prix, have decided to allow Auto-Tune to enhance the singing voices in this year’s competition.

Now SVT is responding to the neighboring country’s decision. Karin Gunnarsson, competition producer of Melodifestivalen spoke to Sveriges Radio Kulturnytt and said that SVT follows the guidelines of Eurovision Song Contest and hence it would be challenging to use Auto-Tune in the Swedish national selection process:

“This means that there would be a version of a song that must be revamped to suit Eurovision. And that’s just a good thing.”

Auto-Tune can be explained as an effect used to correct and manipulate the pitch of a voice. Among, other things, to avoid false notes. It is widely used in both live productions and recordings. And sometimes it is used, says Karin Gunnarsson, as a personal artistic choice:

“Some use it as an artistic and unique selling proposition to make their music or song stand out. But it will be hard to get that expression into Melodifestivalen as it is now. Those artists are not relevant, so to speak. Furthermore, there is no need or pressure from the industry artists that they want Auto-Tune.”

And Mårten Tomassen, who is chairman of the Norwegian Eurovision fan club, spoke to Sveriges Radio and expressed his belief that allowing Auto-Tune would be a step in the wrong direction.

“I don’t like it, one of the dubious aspects of Melodifestivalen is that the artist sings with the voice they are known with. Sometimes it’s an amazing vocal experience, other times not so good.”

Do you think that Auto-Tune should be introduced at Melodifestivalen or any other Eurovision national selection processes? Let us know in the comments section below!

Sweden: A collaboration Smash Into Pieces made might be in breach of SVT rules?

Smash Into Pieces initiates a collaboration with Keep Sweden Tidy“. That was a press release that the sanitation organization sent out recently. The press release also mentioned that the band has participated in this year’s Melodifestivalen and “finished in an impressive third place” and since then “continued to make an impression”.

This may be in conflict with SVT‘s rules for how artists may use the Melodifestivalen brand in other contexts. Earlier this year, the project manager for Melodifestivalen, Anders Wistbacka, says to Resumé after they asked questions about Smash Into Pieces‘ collaboration with Keep Sweden Tidy:

The participants have the right to do whatever they want, as long as there is no connection to Melodifestivalen. Any violations must be examined on a case-by-case basis and we will now contact the parties concerned to investigate this case”

What is a connection to Melodifestivalen? Is a mention in a press release enough? It has become increasingly difficult for SVT to stick to its original rule that artists in Melodifestivalen are not allowed to engage commercially in connection with the festival. Prior to this year’s Melodifestivalen, SVT itself wrote that: “SVT seems to have become more generous in its interpretation of the regulations for Melodifestivalen artists’ advertising assignments.” Then Aftonbladet‘s reporter Tobbe Ek explained the change as follows:

“20 years ago, artists’ advertising collaborations were a controversial topic. SVT was careful not to mix with companies with Melodifestvialen’s participating artists. Nowadays, there are many artists who get their main income through commercial collaborations and since Melodifestivalen wants to have the hottest artists, the regulations have had to be interpreted more openly.”

For Resumé, Anders Wistbacka clarifies the relaxed rules:

“Participating artists are not under a waiting period for their participation in Melodifestivalen. This means that it’s okay to do advertising collaborations. However, the artists are not allowed to link their participation in Melodifestivalen to commercial contexts. The song itself is under a 30-day waiting period after the last participation in Melodifestivalen. It is impossible for us to continuously control all artists’ activities outside Melodifestivalen, but we always act when situations come to our attention.”

Lisa Possne Frisell, Head of Communications at Keep Sweden Tidy, writes in an email to Resumé:

“We have been in dialogue with SVT and understood our miswording in the message as the partnership is not dependent or should be reflected in their participation in Melodifestivalen. So we would like to correct the design.”

Smash Into Pieces will take part in Heat 1, Saturday 3 February 2024, in Malmö Arena, with the song“Heroes Are Calling”. In 2023, they participated with the song “Six Feet Under” and placed third.

Kim Cesarion: “We’ve been having talks the years before, but it felt right this time.” | Exclusive Interview

As you had read in one of our past articles, the final list of Melodifestivalen participants was published on the 1st of December, at a press conference hosted by SVT at their headquarters in Stockholm.

Andreas Papayiannakis and EurovisionFun was at SVT/TV-huset, in Oxenstiernsgatan 34, Stockholm, accredited to cover the artist reveal event that the Swedish national broadcaster had been preparing for media over the last few months.

There we had the chance to meet several of the participants, among which was Kim Cesarion, who will participate on the 3rd Heat, on Saturday 17 February 2024, at Vida Arena, in VäxjöSweden.

Kim has already done his international breakthrough with the song “Undressed“, but why did he decide to participate at Melodifestivalen and why now? He responded:

“I would say why not? It is something that is very huge in Sweden and obviously all over Europe. We’ve been having talks the years before but it didn’t feel right for me at the time. But I follow my guts with a lot of things in my life and it felt right this time. So that is why now!”

Cesarion was one of the writers of his song titled “Take my breath away“. But what was the thinkling behind the song?

“Will you be back here? Then we will talk about it more *laughs*! I’m keeping the song and the performance a little bit closed so we will have more to talk about. It’s a song that I hope will connect with the fans of Eurovision and also with my supporters that I had since before. It’s kind of a blend of Melodifestivalen but also something that is Kim Cesarion, like the music I’ve been putting out over the last 10 years.”

We asked him what are his aspirations for his participation in 2024 and Kim admitted:

“Hopefully to be able to represent Sweden at Eurovision, that would be very amazing of course.”

An unexpected moment came, when Danny Saucedo suddenly crashed our interview, said he is his favourite and then they gave each other a heartwarming hug. Kim thinks that there isn’t any of his fellow contestants that he should keep an eye on and adds:

“Melodifestivalen is more about love, like a family, it is about having a good time, enjoying ourselves and make sure whoever is watching is enjoying too. I wouldn’t say I have someone particularly that I think I should keep an eye on but I will enjoy watching other performances and see what other songs I would have to compete against of course.”

Kim Cesarion is also Greek from his mum’s side. He explains then what his connection to Greece is, besides his love for Greek lamb, Greek and Cretan food:

“I’m Greek from my mother’s side, my mum is half Swedish half Greek and my father is from Guadeloupe. But on the Greek side we are from Creta and then a lot of people moved to Athens now. I was actually there last year I celebrated Christmas there. I was also the summer of the very same year. So I haven’t been there for a year now, but I am looking forward to the next time I am going back. Cause I need my Greek lamb. I need my Greek food. I need my Cretan food. So yeah I need to be back!”

Does Kim travel to Crete only or he has been to more places in Greece?

“I travel to both Crete and Athens, so hopefully my cousin will take me to more islands when I am there. He is in music too, in Athens, Greek artist, rap music, he has friends who have studios in the islands, so I hope I can make music in Greece too! I genuinely hope to meet the fans that I have in Greece already and hopefully I will be able to make many more new fans from Greece. And they will teach me some Greek too, because I don’t speak the language. So hopefully we will have that connection!”

Who is Kim Cesarion?

Kim Hugo Leonel Niko Cesarion is a 33-year-old Swedish singer-songwriter of Guadeloupean and Greek origin. Cesarion was born in Stockholm to a Guadeloupean father and a GreekCretan/Swedish mother. Cesarion is a classically trained musician. He studied at Lilla Akademien, a highly acclaimed music school in Stockholm, and plays several instruments including the violin, piano, double bass, and viola, as well as drums. He is signed with RCA, Sony Music and Columbia. It’s been a while since he last made music and he plans on coming back to the Swedish music industry by taking part in the contest. He made his big breakthrough in 2013 with the song “Undressed” which became a worldwide hit, with over 88 million streams on Spotify and success in the Nordic countries as well as Australia, New Zealand and the United States and we remember him with his duet with Molly HammarShow Me“.

You can watch our exclusive interview with Kim Cesarion in the video below:
