INFE Poll 2024: The results from INFE Ukraine!

As every year, the INFE International Network conducts the INFE Poll with all its member organizations ranking this year’s entries. Following the votes of 17 member organizations, it’s now time for INFE Ukraine to reveal its rankings!

The results of INFE Ukraine are as per below:

  • 1 point goes to Denmark
  • 2 point go to Norway
  • 3 point go to Cyprus
  • 4 points go to Poland
  • 5 points go to Israel
  • 6 points go to Switzerland
  • 7 points go to Italy
  • 8 points go to Greece
  • 10 points go to Croatia and…
  • 12 points go to Belgium

The 12 poins from INFE Ukraine go to Belgium while the top three includes Croatia and Greece who received 10 and 8 points respectively.

The total amount of points is as per below:

Hungary: MTVA is not going to broadcast Eurovision 2024!

This year’s Eurovision Song Contest 2024 will not be broadcast in Hungary!

Hungary’s national broadcaster, MTVA, will not broadcast the Eurovision contest this year either. The last time this central European country took part was in 2019 and since then it has not broadcast the competition again. The previous time the country withdrew from the competition, in 2010 for financial reasons, the three nights were broadcast normally.

Hungary withdrew in 2019 ahead of Eurovision 2020. When the EBU in November 2019 published the list of participating countries, Hungary was missing. The state channel did not make any public statement about the reasons for the withdrawal.

In the country’s last participation in Eurovision 2019, it was represented for the second time by Joci Pápai and the song “Az én apám” without, however, being able to qualify for the final as it finished in 12th place in the first semi-final.

Eurovision 2024: Switzerland’s First Rehearsal!

The next country to take the stage for its first rehearsal is this year’s bookers’ favorite, Switzerland, that is represented by Nemo and their song “The Code”! 

 Who is Nemo? 

Born in 1999 and coming from Biel, a small Swiss town, music has always played an essential role in Nemo’s life, considering they have been playing the violin, piano and drums ever since they were a child. Their career sparked in 2016, after they went viral, and until this day, Nemo’s music has gained traction with occupying several high positions on the Swiss charts. 

Nemo’s songs revolve around gender identity, mental health and finding one’s place in this world, themes which are also showcased on their Eurovision entry “The Code”. 

 

The rehearsal 

Time for Switzerland’s Nemo to rehearse now – they are a musician, singer and songwriter with a big following in Switzerland. The Code is a mix of rap, drum ‘n’ bass and opera, and we’ve seen over pre-party season that Nemo has the vocal range to deliver all three.

The video for this track gave us hope that Nemo might bring something super-creative to the Eurovision stage, and they have NOT disappointed – Nemo is wearing an outfit made of pink and white fur (with matching fur boots!), and their main prop is a white circular platform two or three metres in diameter. It tips and pivots in all directions – Nemo climbs it, slides down it, dances on it, jumps off it – the whole thing is a showcase of balance, precision timing and codebreaking ambition.

Not something we’ve EVER seen at Eurovision before – welcome to the show, Nemo fans.

Switzerland’s second rehearsal is scheduled to take place on Thursday, 2nd of May, when we get a rounder image of how Nemo’s performance will appear on TV.

So, for all this time before the rehearsals, Eurovision TV will upload different performances of the artists, like different versions of their songs, or covers of songs from other artists.

Eurovision 2024: Which rehearsal had the most views on the first day?

Yesterday, the big moment we’ve all been waiting for has arrived! Rehearsals began with the first seven countries of the first semi-final taking the stage.

However, as we know on TikTok, all the first rehearsals are uploaded. Apart from their performances, we’ll also get a sneak peek backstage before they take the stage for the first time in a video of about one minute.

One of the many features of TikTok is the ability to add songs to each user’s video creation. However, the TikTok algorithm is usually able to detect the song used in the video, assign it to the correct track, and then include it in the total number of videos where that sound has been used. Based on this capability, the most popular songs before rehearsals were from the Netherlands and Italy. Will they receive the same promotion as before?

In less than 24 hours (April 28, 2024, time 17:20 CET), since the first clip from the rehearsals was uploaded, we have a indicative sample of which rehearsal was favored by the audience (here it should be noted that the videos were uploaded one after the other with a one and a half hour interval and there was a significant delay in their publication).

The rehearsals that had the most views are:

  1. Poland: LUNA – The Tower – 711.3 thousand views
  2. Ukraine: alyona alyona & Jerry Heil – Teressa & Maria – 608.1 thousand views
  3. Serbia: Teya Dora – Ramonda – 606.7 thousand views
  4. Croatia: Baby Lasagna – Rim Tim Tagi Dim – 484.7 thousand views
  5. Ireland: Bambie Thug – Doomsday Blue – 208.7 thousand views
  6. Cyprus: Silia Kapsis – Liar -195.8 thousand views
  7. Lithiania: Silvester Belt – Luktelk – 193 thousand views

With this small sample, we can infer that:

  • Poland’s performance possibly appealed to fans, with the caveat that the stage presence was a surprise – either positively or negatively.
  • The rehearsals of Ukraine and Serbia also gained huge popularity, surpassing the following four positions in views, demonstrating their strength in the semifinal.
  • Croatia, as one of the major favorites of the competition, did not gather particularly high views, although fans and betting companies have placed it at the top for victory, resulting in the stage presence not making enough of an impression.
  • Similarly, Lithuania did not impress fans at all, as it maintained the same appearance as its national final.

TikTok has played a significant role in the success of Eurovision songs in recent years. For example, Duncan Laurence’s winning entry “Arcade” became a global hit a year after winning the competition when it was used in over a million videos on TikTok. One of the earliest TikTok successes from Eurovision was Getter Jaani’s “Rockefeller Street”, which went viral on the platform in 2018 and has since been used in over two million videos. Let’s not forget that Armenia’s entry in 2022 by Rosa Linn with “Snap” gained over a billion views on the platform. Finally, Norway’s entry last year gained significant worldwide publicity months before the competition week, where it secured fifth place.

Eurovision 2024: Australia’s First Rehearsal!

Now it’s time for the biggest country that competes in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest to have their first rehearsal and that is Australia. The country of Oceania is represented this year by Electric Fields and their entry “One Milkali (One Blood)”

Who are Electric Fields?

Electric Fields are the first duo to represent Australia at the Eurovision Song Contest.

Electric Fields is an Australian electronic music duo made up of vocalist Zaachariaha Fielding and keyboard player and producer Michael Ross. Electric Fields combine modern electric-soul music with Aboriginal culture. Fans might well remember the pair from SBS’ 2019 national selection show, Eurovision – Australia Decides, where they came a close second to Kate Miller-Heidke with their unforgettable track “2000 And Whatever”. Their song incorporates Yankunytjatjara; an Aboriginal language of the Anangu peoples, one of the oldest living cultures on earth.

Zaachariaha Fielding born in 1991 studied Indigenous Australian music and started producing his own work at the Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Music at the University of Adelaide.

Michael Ross is a singer, songwriter, pianist and producer from Adelaide. His musical influences growing up were mainly Mariah Carey, along with The Cranberries, Tracy Chapman, and Lauryn Hill. Before joining Electric Fields, Ross was a contestant on the X Factor Australia in 2013.

The Rehearsal

Time for Australia’s Electric Fields – fans may remember them from Australia Decides in 2019, when they were runners up to Kate Miller-Heidke and her wobbly pole.

The mathematics enthusiasts amongst you will know that the reference to ‘0.618’ is a Fibonacci sequence thing – hence ‘I stand in the eye of the spiral’. Sincere thanks to Electric Fields for bringing the golden ratio to Eurovision, it was long overdue. Art class yesterday, mathematics today.

Zaachariaha Fielding’s fabulous white dress captures the arena light and transforms into a rainbow at the start, and then this whole performance builds into an uplifting cosmic explosion of light and colour across both the LED wall and the floor. Zaachariaha is supported by Michael Ross on keyboards, two backing singers, and of course the didgeridoo.

There’s a lot of movement around the stage, which makes it feel like it’s a performance that aims to welcome in every corner of the arena – just pure joy from start to finish, and we’re delighted to add Yankunytjatjara, an Aboriginal language, to the Eurovision canon.
