Ireland: The head of delegation does not support the boycott of Israel in Eurovision 2024!

After the statements of the public broadcasters of Norway and Denmark, now also the Irish head of delegation, expresses his opposition to the boycott of Israel in Eurovision 2024.

Speaking on the Eurotrippodcast, Michael Kealy who is the head of Ireland’s Eurovision delegation, agreed with the EBU’s decision and against any boycott of Israel in the contest.

This is not competition between governments – it is competition between public broadcasters. The public broadcaster in Israel is an independent broadcaster like RTÉ. It is independent of the government – it is not Netanyahu’s mouthpiece.

Michael Kealy is also opposed to Ireland withdrawing from the contest because of Israel’s participation in it.

There are many calls to withdraw from Eurovision because Israel is participating in it. This would set a very dangerous precedent if we do this at RTÉ because we are not a political organisation, we are a public broadcaster. I’m not in favor of that.

Ireland: The Late Late Show will most likely be the Irish national selection format for 2024!

The Irish delegation had been evaluating the prospects for the Eurovision project in the years that will follow, after their failed participation this year with “We are One” by Wild Youth which managed to accumulate only ten points in their semi final.

As a guest to Éirevision podcast, Michael Kealy gave his insight about what the next year’s Irish selection procedure would look like.

The Irish Eurovision representative for 2024 will most likely be selected through The Late Late Show. Michael Kealy mentioned that the plans are that the show will be aired somewhere around early 2024, but there may be some changes in its format.

The changes might affect the appearance of the selection, making it feel abit more like a concert, rather than a regular TV show. There are still things to be discussed  with RTÉ though. Regarding the selection procedure, Michael still thinks that some certain acts could directly take part in the televised show of the national final, same way as it happened this year with Wild Youth and Public Image Ltd.

This year Ireland participated at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 with “We are One” by Wild Youth and they got disqualified by the Grand Final, by placing 12th with a total of ten points.

Ireland: RTÉ prepares National Final for Eurovision 2024!

RTÉ has started its preparations to select their representative for the Eurovision Song Contest.  The public broadcaster has published the rules for their selection.

According to the first preparations, RTÉ will have a national final.  It is still unclear however, if the televised final will use the “Late Late Show” format as it has been the rule for the most recent selections.

The deadline to submit a song for the Irish national final is Friday 29th of September 2023 at 6 pm local time (7pm CET).  Artists and songwriters are invited to submit their songs on RTE‘s website.  In any case, the Irish broadcaster is looking for artists who already have experience:

If you are an accomplished songwriter with a proven track record of success in the music industry, we would like you to submit an original song (…) Submissions should have a performer or performers already attached, performer(s) must have the ambition, vocal ability, stagecraft and confidence to compete at the highest level before a global audience of nearly 200 million people. Performer(s) must have intrinsic and obvious appeal to the core youth audiences who make up a significant amount of Eurovision viewers and fans.

A jury will evaluate the songs submitted and they will select the songs that will make a list of potential candidates.  After this, RTÉ may invite some of the candidates to audition before making a final decision.  We will inform about the future dates for the national final as we get more updates!
