Eurovision 2024: United Kingdom’s First Rehearsal!

Next up on the stage of Eurovision Song Contest 2024 is the United Kingdom. Olly Alexander with his song “Dizzy” is ready for his first rehearsal on the stage of Malmö Arena!

Who is Olly Alexander?

As he embarks on the first release under his own name, Olly Alexander remains one of the world’s most trailblazing modern pop stars.

Across three hugely successful albums to date, the singer, actor and fashion icon has scored two UK number 1 albums, 10 UK Top 40 singles and was recently awarded the BRIT Billion Award (with 6.5 billion streams globally).

With his band Years & Years evolving into a solo project and, in 2024, a brand-new solo era, Olly has become a once-in-a-generation voice: the Russell T Davies show It’s A Sin won Best New Drama at the National Television Awards, with Olly also nominated for Leading Actor at the 2022 BAFTA Television Awards, for his performance in the series.

Olly has headlined arenas and festivals worldwide and collaborated with the likes of Sir Elton John, Kylie Minogue and Pet Shop Boys.

Olly’s entry “Dizzy” is produced and co-signed by Danny L. Harle, who serves as the producer of Dua Lipa’s upcoming album, “Radical Optimism” and is also behind her recent hit songs, such as “Houdini” and “Training Season”.

Olly Alexander was selected internally by BBC back in December 2023. The announcement of his Eurovision participation was conducted by himself during the Finale of Dancing With The Stars program.

The Rehearsal

First up today is the UK’s Olly Alexander, singing his song Dizzy. He’s a very well-known and long-established performer in the UK, as well as an award-winning actor.

Very helpfully, we received some staging notes from the UK delegation for this performance – here’s how they describe what we’re currently watching:

Olly Alexander’s Eurovision performance transports viewers into a post- apocalyptic dystopian boxing gym locker room, aboard a spaceship hurtling toward Earth through a black hole in 1985!

We’re not making this up, we promise. Essentially there’s a big room set on stage, lined with dirty tiles and shower heads – this whole thing feels like a grittier version of George Michael’s Outside, so very much the vibe of the official video. Olly’s four male dancers are wearing (the bare minimum of) red boxing gear, and the camera angles keep changing so it feels like the room is rotating, backed by a spinning black hole graphics on the LED. It really does feel like they’re in a dirty locker room hurtling through space.

In short, it’s VERY ambitious and mind-blowing bit of staging, with a gym bag full of special effects that mean it only really comes to life on screen.

Also a note on the song arrangement – to our ears, there’s a new middle eight with extra strings, and the build to the final chorus is different.

PYRO UPDATE! Loads of sparks and fireworks at the end, which make it feels like the set is malfunctioning, then a final big bang. Photos coming soon!

Eurovision 2023: United Kingdom’s First Rehearsal!

Today is the fifth day of rehearsals in Liverpool and the first rehearsals of the BIG 5 countries are going to be held today! Heading towards the end of this group’s rehearsals, next up on stage for their first rehearsal is the United Kingdom and Mae Muller with the song “I Wrote A Song”.

Who is Mae Muller?

Holly Mae Muller is a English pop singer and songwriter. She started by uploading demos of her songs in SoundCloud in 2017. Two years later, she was an opening act for Little Mix tour, where she started gaining fans. She is known worldwide with her pop hit “Better Days” in 2021 that charted in both UK and United States. Her Eurovision entry is the first entry from United Kingdom that debuted on the UK Singles Chart’s top 40 in over a decade.

The Rehearsal

Unfortunately this year, accredited journalists don’t get the chance to watch the first and second rehearsals, so we only get the information and content that the organizers officaly release to the public.

Mae’s outfit consists of total black, she combined trousers with a corset jacket. The performance starts on a raised plinth in front of the LED wall with a feature of huge pop art-style graphics. There is also a face split of Mae’s happening in two horizontally, giving the impression that she is inside her own head. It gives the vibe like it’s already taped and looks great live.

She’s accompanied by four dancers dressed in red and black, who join her at the front of the stage for a choreography in the second half of the song, the choreography is described like a dance routine. This performance builds up to a big old pop banger finish. What a better choice to close the Grand Final of Eurovision 2023!

Eurovision 2022: United Kingdom’s second rehearsal

Today is the final day of rehearsals in Turin, with the second rehearsals of the BIG 5 countries!

Next up on stage for their second rehearsal is the United Kingdom and Sam Ryder with the song “SPACE MAN”.

Who is Sam Ryder?

Sam is a singer and songwriter from Essex who has seen his popularity go stratospheric, largely thanks to social media. The Brit co-wrote his Eurovision entry with Grammy winning songwriter Amy Wadge (Ed Sheeran, Thinking Out Loud) and Max Wolfgang, and with over 12 million followers and 100 million likes on TikTok, he is currently the most followed UK music artist on the platform.

As the world went into lockdown in March 2020, Sam uploaded the first of his now famous cover videos, quickly catching the attention of celebrity fans including Justin BieberSia and Alicia Keys, who even posted her own video reacting to his cover of her song If I Ain’t Got You.

Since then he’s been signed by Parlophone Records, released his debut EP (The Sun’s Gonna Rise), and received top-level support from the UK’s biggest radio stations.

The Rehearsal

The performance starts in the dark with Sam’s clothes glowing. Then the huge prop lights up and we see everything.

A very solid vocal performance by Sam who doesn’t hesitate to show his full range.

The prop opens during the final chorus and the lights turn gold. Sam also plays the guitar!

There were some errors with the cameras showing the crew moving the prop in the first run, but a huge applause in the end.

This is a strong contender.

During the second run the camera work improved. The third run was the best so far.

The Rehearsal

The United Kingdom wins the biggest prop award of the contest so far. They’ve put up on stage a metal structure made up of three enormous wings, like something off the set of a science fiction movie. Just to have a comparison measure, each section is bigger than Australia’s staircase, maybe four or five metres high?

EBU / ANDRES PUTTING

Sam’s on an illuminated circular plinth in the middle, is wearing a black outfit with black and white trainers, giving it amazing vocals as the structure lights up, then finally opens up. It’s visually really impressive, and Sam does a great job of connecting with the cameras too. The final twenty seconds of this takes a turn from the recorded version, leading to an epic finale.
