Italy: The Final’s viewership | Everything we saw at the Finale Serata

The 75th Sanremo Festival is now behind us, and the only remaining question is whether Olly will accept the invitation to represent Italy at Eurovision 2025. We will find out very soon during the winner’s press conference. Until then, let’s review and discuss everything we witnessed last night at the Finale Serata.

The Final’s Viewership

Sanremo 2025 concluded with 13,427,000 viewers and a 73.1% audience share. It was the only night of this year’s festival that recorded a lower viewership than last year’s equivalent, making the score Carlo Conti vs. Amadeus 4-1. Last year’s final attracted 14,301,000 viewers with an average audience share of 75.1%.

Italian Misogyny Once Again in the Spotlight

One of the most striking aspects of last night’s broadcast was the intense booing during the announcement of the final rankings. The audience strongly disapproved when Achille Lauro was placed seventh, and even more so when Carlo Conti announced Giorgia in sixth place. For a considerable time, the crowd expressed its displeasure, while the hosts simply stood by, looking awkward and unsure how to react.

Giorgia, who was the overwhelming favorite to win according to betting odds, didn’t even make it to the final round of voting. However, she had her moment of redemption when she received the TIM Award for the most popular artist. The audience at Teatro Ariston gave her a standing ovation, chanting her name, demonstrating their support. Giorgia was visibly moved, unable to hold back tears. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that not even the winner received such a passionate reaction from the crowd.

Once again, the festival’s results raise concerns, and the organizers must reflect on the fact that not only did no woman make it into the Top 5 for another year, but Giorgia was the only female artist in the Top 10.

If we consider that Angelina Mango’s victory last year was seen as a reaction to the massive televoting support for Geolier (over 70%) due to backing from southern Italy, it becomes evident that issues of sexism and perhaps even misogyny persist within the festival.

How the Voting System Affected the Outcome

Had last year’s voting system been in place this year, Olly would not have won—Lucio Corsa would have been the victor. Conversely, if this year’s system had been used last year, Angelina Mango wouldn’t have won; Geolier would have taken the trophy instead!

Marta Dona: The Power Behind Sanremo Winners

The secret behind nearly all recent Sanremo winners can be summed up in one name: Marta Dona. The renowned artist manager has represented Maneskin, Marco Mengoni, and Angelina Mango.

In Italy, there’s already a saying: if Marta Dona isn’t your manager, you won’t win Sanremo. And that’s not far from the truth. With her extensive experience in the music industry, she knows how to pick a winning song and how to strategically manage her artists to ensure the best possible outcome.

Eyes on the Winner’s Press Conference

Our focus now shifts to the winner’s press conference, set to begin in just a few minutes at Teatro Ariston. There, we will officially find out whether Olly will travel to Basel in May to represent Italy at Eurovision 2025.
