Australia: Which Eurovision artist was crowned as the winner of The Masked Singer Australia?

The fifth season of the Australian adaption of The Masked Singer franchise has officially come to an end. After twelve episodes, Snow Fox was crowned as the winner of the competition.

About a month ago, we had informed you about the speculation regarding the person that is behind Snow Fox.

Fans believed that behind “Snow Fox” character was Dami Im, who represented Australia in Eurovision 2016. Snow Fox made its first appearance in episode 2 of this season, singing “Addicted To You” by Avicii, leaving the panelists speechless with its vocal range.

Some of the clues indicating the singer’s identity were the following:

  • It was said that Snow Fox was shown holding the Swedish flag. Indeed, Dami Im represented Australia in 2016, when the contest was hosted in Stockholm.
  • Moreover, Snow Fox has two homes. In fact, Dami Im was born and raised in South Korea before moving to Australia when 9 years-old.

Following the win of Snow Fox, the artist’s identity was unveiled. Dami Im was in fact the one behind the mask, being the first Eurovision artist to win The Masked Singer Australia during its five seasons run.

Dami Im was not the first Eurovision artist to participate in The Masked Singer Australia. Sheldon Riley(Australia 2022) and Kate Miller-Heidke(Australia 2019) have also participated, while Sheldon reached the finals but did not eventually win the show.

What is The Masked Singer?

The Masked Singer” is a franchise of worldwide music reality shows. South Korea originated, the show has been aired in more than 60 countries worldwide, being a big success.

The concept comprises celebrities who perform a song anonymously while wearing extravagant masks or full-body costumes. The panelists will then try to figure out the identity based on information provided by the singers about themselves. Following their performances, the singers are voted on by the audience in each round, yet the panelists do not vote. Each round, the performer with the fewest votes is unmasked and eliminated until a winner is crowned.

Dami represented Australia in Eurovision 2016 with her song “Sound Of Silence”. “Sound Of Silence” went on to win the jury vote, finishing in the second place overall, making it the highest-scoring Australian entry ever.

MTV EMA 2023: Eurostars among the award recipients!

The 2023 edition of the MTV Europe Music Awards may have been cancelled due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war for security reasons, however this did not prevent the hosts of announcing the winners of each award category. Winning artists were revealed yesterday and hence will receive their awards at a later stage.

The regional European MTV awards have a strong connection with Eurovision, as many artists emerge each year from the contest and introduce themselves into a wider audience. As a result, there could not be an MTV winning artists’ list without the presence of Eurovision stars.

Specifically,

  • Måneskin, the winners of Eurovision 2021, have won in the “Best Rock” category as well as in the “Best Italian Act“. This marks the second time they have been awarded with the “Best Rock”, following 2021 and the first time with “Best Italian Act“, after being nominated for three times.
  • Gjon’s Tears has been awarded the “Best Swiss Act” award for the second time, following 2021, the year he competed in Eurovision, finishing third.

Best Nordic Act

This year, we could all agree that the “Best Nordic Act” category was a bloodbath. All the three artists nominated for the prize were Eurovision 2023 artists. Loreen, Alessandra and Käärijä were nominated, indicating the big commercial success they had after achieving a top five placement in Liverpool.

The choice was hard, but in the end Käärijä from Finland won the award of the “Best Nordic Act”.

Other Eurovision artists nominated

Along with the aforementioned, there were more Eurovision stars nominated for an award in the MTV EMA 2023, such as

  • Sam Ryder (United Kingdom 2022) was nominated for the “Best Push Artist” category
  • and S10 (Netherlands 2022) was nominated for the “Best Dutch Act” category

“Best Israeli Act” missing

Reading the winning artists’ list, we can easily notice the absence of the “Best Israeli Act” category. There is no information given by the awards committee about the exclusion of the category referring to the Israeli music scene and to what extent it is connected with the ongoing war.

Nevertheless, on the nominated artists’ list, Noa Kirel, the Israeli representative in Liverpool, was also found. Noa Kirel, even before her introduction to the European audience the past May, has been a multi-nominated and multi-awarded artist in the MTV EMAs.

Loreen: Music video clip of Loreen’s brand new single “Is it Love” is out now! | Watch it here!

A few days after Loreen made her first step, post-Eurovision, by releasing her first single called “Is it Lovefrom her upcoming album, the music video of the song just got released on YouTube!

Loreen says about “Is it Love“:

“Is It Love” was born from a place of seeking clarity, it’s a song describing and contemplating a love that’s so deep but at the same time filled with confusion. It’s about realising that to create a deeper understanding of yourself you need to accept the duality of life, that distortion and clarity goes hand in hand and are equally as important. And to experience the depth of true love, both to the self as well as to others, you have to accept and experience the depth of pain.”

As a leading female diaspora artist, Loreen’s Moroccan Berber roots are embedded in her new cinematic pop sound now more than ever and flits between cultures. All this essence is obvious in the music video as well!

But what could this mean? Is this a reference at them taking part in Melodifestivalen 2024, or they are referencing a potential participation at MGP 2024, which could potentially let them represent Norway in Malmö, Sweden?

Time will tell.

Who are KEiiNO?

KEiiNO is a Norwegian supergroup consisting of Sámi rapper Fred Buljo and singers Alexandra Rotan and Tom Hugo. The group was created in late 2018 in preparation for their participation in Melodi Grand Prix 2019, which they won and so were selected to represent Norway with the song “Spirit in the Sky” in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019, finishing in sixth place, even though they placed first in the televoting results.

On 11 January 2021, it was announced that KEiiNO would participate in the Melodi Grand Prix 2021 final with the pre-qualified song “Monument“. The song was released at midnight on 15 January 2021 with the group’s debut performance of the song during the first heat of Melodi Grand Prix 2021 on 16 January 2021. The song reached the top four in the final on 20 February 2021, eventually reaching the gold duel, but lost to Tix‘s “Fallen Angel“.

Do you think KEiiNO could be selected to represent Norway for a second time? Let us know in the comment section below.

Germany: Lord Of The Lost will try to compete again in Eurovision!

Lord Of The Lost represented Germany in Eurovision 2023 with their song “Blood And Glitter”. After winning the German national selection with a huge televoting margin, they brought heavy metal to Eurovision stage.

Actually, “Blood And Glitter” was not their first Eurovision attempt. Lord Of The Lost also applied for the German national selection in 2022, without making it to the final line-up. In fact, the song that they submitted, “One Last Song“, was recently released.

With this song we applied for the German Finals for the 2022 ESC in Turin. If you remember, in 2022 it was not part of the German ESC concept to have rock or metal be part of the competition, so we did not make it to the German Finals back then. Same thing happened with Pump It” by our colleagues of @electriccallboy. Besides a basic studio version of our song, we also produced a ruff acoustic demo, which you can actually hear on our ESC Edition of the ‘Blood & Glitter’ album.

Although finishing last with “Blood And Glitter”, Lord Of The Lost are not discouraged to try again and compete in the future, as they announced via an Instagram post of theirs. Nevertheless, bearing in mind the numerous Eurovision covers they were sharing on social media, Lord Of The Lost must love the contest and the message of unity it represents.

What a ride, what a great time. Euro-fans: be sure we will try to compete again in the future!

Unfortunately, Lord Of The Lost did not succeed in overturning the tables for Germany, a country that struggles a lot in its Eurovision course for the past ten editions. Indicatively, in the last ten editions, Germany has finished last four times and second-last three times.
