Eurovision 2024: United Kingdom’s First Rehearsal!

Next up on the stage of Eurovision Song Contest 2024 is the United Kingdom. Olly Alexander with his song “Dizzy” is ready for his first rehearsal on the stage of Malmö Arena!

Who is Olly Alexander?

As he embarks on the first release under his own name, Olly Alexander remains one of the world’s most trailblazing modern pop stars.

Across three hugely successful albums to date, the singer, actor and fashion icon has scored two UK number 1 albums, 10 UK Top 40 singles and was recently awarded the BRIT Billion Award (with 6.5 billion streams globally).

With his band Years & Years evolving into a solo project and, in 2024, a brand-new solo era, Olly has become a once-in-a-generation voice: the Russell T Davies show It’s A Sin won Best New Drama at the National Television Awards, with Olly also nominated for Leading Actor at the 2022 BAFTA Television Awards, for his performance in the series.

Olly has headlined arenas and festivals worldwide and collaborated with the likes of Sir Elton John, Kylie Minogue and Pet Shop Boys.

Olly’s entry “Dizzy” is produced and co-signed by Danny L. Harle, who serves as the producer of Dua Lipa’s upcoming album, “Radical Optimism” and is also behind her recent hit songs, such as “Houdini” and “Training Season”.

Olly Alexander was selected internally by BBC back in December 2023. The announcement of his Eurovision participation was conducted by himself during the Finale of Dancing With The Stars program.

The Rehearsal

First up today is the UK’s Olly Alexander, singing his song Dizzy. He’s a very well-known and long-established performer in the UK, as well as an award-winning actor.

Very helpfully, we received some staging notes from the UK delegation for this performance – here’s how they describe what we’re currently watching:

Olly Alexander’s Eurovision performance transports viewers into a post- apocalyptic dystopian boxing gym locker room, aboard a spaceship hurtling toward Earth through a black hole in 1985!

We’re not making this up, we promise. Essentially there’s a big room set on stage, lined with dirty tiles and shower heads – this whole thing feels like a grittier version of George Michael’s Outside, so very much the vibe of the official video. Olly’s four male dancers are wearing (the bare minimum of) red boxing gear, and the camera angles keep changing so it feels like the room is rotating, backed by a spinning black hole graphics on the LED. It really does feel like they’re in a dirty locker room hurtling through space.

In short, it’s VERY ambitious and mind-blowing bit of staging, with a gym bag full of special effects that mean it only really comes to life on screen.

Also a note on the song arrangement – to our ears, there’s a new middle eight with extra strings, and the build to the final chorus is different.

PYRO UPDATE! Loads of sparks and fireworks at the end, which make it feels like the set is malfunctioning, then a final big bang. Photos coming soon!

Eurovision 2024: Latvia’s Second Rehearsal!

Next artist to step on the cross-like stage of Malmö Arena and try to win one of the ten tickets for the Final is Dons from Latvia, who is performing his song, “Hollow“.

Who is Dons?

Dons is one of Latvia’s most famous singers and songwriters. His real name is Artūrs Šingirejs, and he was born in 1984, the year when Sweden marked its second win in the Contest. Dons has also won Latvian Music Recording Awards’ “Top Hit” not once, but eight times for the most played song on the radio. However, the records for him do not stop there.

He has also released eight solo albums, he has won “Best Pop Album” twice and “Best Rock Album” once, while he has also won numerous awards, including Latvijas Radio’s Muzikālās Banka “Song of the Year” five times.

Moreover, Dons began his carrer back in 2003 through the Latvian reality show “Talantu Fabrika“. Since then, he has also released a duet album, while his debut album, “Lights On” (2006), was mostly in English.

Let’s remember here that although Dons won the National Final of Latvia, Supernova 2024, hence he is a member of our Eurovision 2024 community, he had also tried to represent Latvia twice in the past, in 2010 with his song “My Religion Is Freedom“, and in 2014 with “Pēdējā Vēstule“, both finishing in second place.

The rehearsal:

The staging for this features a huge circular prop (maybe three or four metres in diameter), that Dons stands in at the start of the song. It doesn’t move or spin or light up, but it does create a really powerful focal point on stage.

Dons is wearing his trademark royal blue sleeveless pantsuit , and he’s backed by an LED wall of gently pulsing lights and circles. The lighting effects are actually really clever – lots of slow-moving blue spotlights in the verses that kick into much brighter, whiter lights in the chorus. They feel like searchlights, and it gives this whole performance a MOOD.

Ukraine: Tanu Muiño appointed as Creative Director for “Teresa & Maria”!

Suspiline, the Ukrainian broadcaster, has announced that the creative director for their Eurovision 2024 entry “Teresa & Maria” is Tanu Muiño.

The artists behind the song, alyona alyona & Jerry Heil, had decided to keep Tanu’s involvement with their entry a secret until now. However, the appointment of Tanu as Ukraine’s creative director is a major coup considering her wide experience in staging music videos and performances.

Described as “the most famous Ukrainian director in the world” by Suspiline in a press release, Tanu has worked with some of the biggest names in music. The list of her collaborators includes Harry Styles, Dua Lipa, The Weeknd and many others, meaning she’s behind some of the world’s biggest music videos.

Now, Tanu has teamed up with alyona alyona & Jerry Heil, who say they “are grateful to fate for the opportunity to team up with Tanu Muiño”.

We are thrilled Tanu became the creative director of our performance. She created so many powerful and incredibly beautiful works, and now she is staging the whole performance –  from development to implementation – that will probably be the most important in our lives. We are grateful Tanu felt the performance exactly as you will see it on May 7 during the first Semi-final at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Malmö. We managed to bring to life what we had been planning and creating for so long. We have a song that is engraved in the heart of every Ukrainian, a great director who created the best performance for us, so we are ready to represent our country in the best possible way.

We have also now seen what staging Tanu Muiño has worked on for Ukraine’s Eurovision entry this year. After two rehearsals, a clip has been released by The Council showcasing the staging, which involves Jerry Heil climbing a large rock-like structure as shooting stars fall behind her on the LED wall.

Eurovision 2024: Armenia’s second rehearsal!

One of the two Caucasian second semi-final competitors will go up next. More precisely, Ladaniva, the representatives of Armenia in Eurovision 2024, just wrapped up their second on-stage rehearsal. On May 9, they will play the folk song “Jako” on the stage of Malmö Arena.

Who are Ladaniva?

LADANIVA is made up of Armenian vocalist Jaklin Baghdasaryan and French multi-instrumentalist Louis Thomas.

From traditional Balkan melodies to the rhythms of maloya, jazz and reggae, the duo’s songs have been said to transcend borders, blending traditional Armenian tunes with inspirations drawn from their extensive travels across Latin America, Africa and Réunion Island.

Founded in 2019, Ladaniva initially gained viral acclaim with their hit song Vay Aman (2020), which showcased their fresh style and innovative approach to world music.

The group released their eponymous debut album under the French label PIAS in 2023.

The Rehearsal

The official video for this has lots of sass and energy, and that spirit has definitely been brought to the Malmö stage, along with Jaklin’s costume and trademark plaits. There’s also an island of brightly coloured plinths in the middle of the stage, where Ladaniva’s band stand on different levels playing their instruments.

In the second half the LED wall and cube graphics kick in, with Armenian motifs and lots of chickens. The whole thing is a riot of colour and energy.

Eurovision 2024: Denmark’s second rehearsal!

The second rehearsal for Saba, the Danish candidate for Eurovision 2024, has just concluded on the stage of Malmö Arena. In an attempt to win one of the 10 tickets to the grand final, the artist will perform the song “Sand” in the second semi-final on May 9.

Who is Saba?

SABA is proud to be the first brown, queer woman to sing for Denmark at the Eurovision Song Contest. At home she is a strong role model for minorities and the LGBTQ+ community and is open about her own struggles with mental vulnerability and being bipolar, making her an inspiring symbol of hope and perseverance, which she hopes many can relate to.

For several years, SABA worked as a model and photographer, but it was in 2023 that she seized the opportunity to focus on music, by taking over the lead role in the musical HAIR from her twin sister, Andrea.

She wants to play an important role in making Malmö 2024 an inclusive celebration where she can represent many different people, and Denmark, in her own unique way.

The Rehearsal

This power ballad builds from the soft, low-key start to the huge crescendo finish, and the staging does the same – using lighting and glittery graphics to add layer upon layer until Saba’s vocals fill the whole arena.

It’s very similar to the staging we saw at Denmark’s national final, Melodi Grand Prix, just on a bigger and more epic Malmö scale. Saba is wearing a white pant suit – if it’s not the same she wore at MGP, it’s very similar. The pockets are filled with sand, and she scatters it as part of really beautiful armography routine that mirrors a projected version of Saba on the LED wall behind her. Really simple, but all the more impactful for it.Lots of floor smoke in the final run-through, which gives the whole performance even more drama.

Eurovision 2024: Austria’s Second Rehearsal!

The moment for Austria’s second rehearsal has officially arrived, as Kaleen sets the mood with her song “We Will Rave”!

Who is Kaleen?

Performing has always been an integral part of Kaleen’s life, considering she has been doing it ever since she was little and has gained great experience as a singer, dancer and choreographer. Thus, she has shined at numerous national, European and international dance championships.

However, Kaleen is no stranger to the Eurovision Song Contest. She contributed as a stand-in singer for the rehearsals of Eurovision 2018 and also, as a dancer and choreographer for the interval acts. Moreover, she supported a few acts at last year’s edition and, as for Junior Eurovision, Kaleen took the responsibility of the creative direction of Spain and Bulgaria in 2021 and the overall stage direction in 2022.

 The rehearsal

Τhere’s an inverted pyramid made of metal scaffolding hanging above the middle of the stage, that shoots lasers, giving the stage a warehouse rave vibe. She is wearing a silver sparkly leotard and thigh boots, different in comparison with the ones of the first rehearsal. She has four male backing dancers, wearing black cargo pants, sleeveless jackets and oversized wraparound shades. With Kaleen they deliver a full-on dance routine that covers the whole stage.

There’s also a RUM-DE-DUM-DA-DA hip swivel move. Smoke and steam jets, and Kaleen tried a different (and much fluffier) white coat. No idea which will make it through to second rehearsals – we’ll find out later in the week!

After today’s second rehearsals a recap video will be published on the official Youtube channel! Stay tuned!

Bets: Croatia back on top – The latest odds shake-ups!

Croatia‘s rise to the top of the betting tables was only a matter of time, which is exactly what happened. So, after more than a month since Switzerland rose to the top of the betting tables, the big moment of Croatia‘s return to the position they have been in for much of this year’s Eurovision season has arrived.

We had already reported in last night’s Editorial that Baby Lasagna and “Rim Tim Tagi Dim” were rapidly closing the gap between them and the leading Switzerland. A few hours later the expected “change of baton” took place, with Croatia now in pole position to win the 68th Eurovision Song Contest.

Taking a closer look at the odds, we see significant changes in a few hours since last night’s release of the recap of the countries participating in the first semi-final. As a result, the top spot is now occupied by Croatia, with bookers offering the Croats‘ maiden win at odds between 3 and 3.5 (3.75 – 4.5 last night).

As a consequence, Switzerland dropped out of the top spot for the first time since the end of March. Switzerland and Nemo‘s win is now being bet at odds between 3 and 4, whereas until last night it was between 2.63 and 3.

Italy is also losing ground, with Ukraine threatening to overtake them within a short time. Between 5 and 6.5 is on offer for those who believe in Angelina Mango‘s potential (5-6 last night), while Ukraine‘s counterpart is now being played at odds between 5.5 and 7, clearly lower than before the recap was released when Alyona Alyona & Jerry Heil won impressions (7.5 – 10).

A drop of course for the Netherlands, which has been the big loser in the top five since the start of the rehearsals, with a potential win for Joost Klein and “Europapa” returning up to ten times the stakes.

As for the rest of the Top 10, Israel has moved up to sixth place in the last few hours. Israel‘s victory is offered at odds between 17 and 23, slightly higher compared to last night (15-21). A one place drop for France, in a development that was largely expected, as we reported in our betting analysis last night. Up to 26 times the stake is returned by “Mon Amour” and Slimane.

Greece remains stable for now, in eighth place. A possible win for “ZARI” and Marina Satti is still being played at the moment at odds between 21 and 34, just like last night.

Slightly behind Greece is Ireland who remain ninth, but are seeing their odds of victory diminish by the hour. Performing one of the best rehearsals of the first semi-final, it’s only natural that bookies are dropping Ireland’s odds to win, a possibility that is currently being played at odds between 23 and 41, when just a few hours ago it was returning up to 67 times the stakes.

Finally, absolutely stagnant in tenth place remains Norway. Should Gåte win this year’s Eurovision with “Ulveham“, people who bet on them will get up to 101 times their money back.
