Finland: Broadcaster Yle states they won’t participate if EBU allows Russia’s participation in Turin!

The developments regarding Russia’s participation in Eurovision 2022 and the rest of the countries’ reactions are truly rapid. Following the statements of the public broadcasters of Sweden, Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands, the broadcaster of Finland (Yle) also asks the EBU not to allow the participation of Russia, while going one step further, stating that in case Russia’s participation is eventually allowed, then they are not going to send their own representative to Turin!

Russia’s attack on Ukraine runs counter to all the values represented by Yle and other European broadcasters. Yle has always defended western democracy, the rule of law, freedom of expression and human dignity. Yle can not take part in an event where Russia, which has blatantly attacked these values, can use one of Europe’s best-known brands to promote its own interests. We hope the EBU will act in accordance with its values.

Yle

Finland is due to select its representative for Eurovision 2022 tomorrow, Saturday, February 26th.

For the countries that have already spoken up against Russia’s participation in Eurovision 2022, you can refer to our previous article.

We remind you that the EBU, at the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, stated the following:

The Eurovision Song Contest is a non-political – cultural event that unites countries and celebrates differences through music. EBU members in both Russia and Ukraine have pledged to attend this year’s event in Turin and we intend to welcome them and let artists from both countries participate in May. Of course, we continue to monitor developments closely.

EBU

What will the EBUs reaction be after the pressure it’s receiving from several of its members? What will the final decision on Russia’s participation in Eurovision 2022 be?

Finland: Interview with Olivera | Life after death and the participation in UMK 2022 ! (Video)

After being selected to compete in this year’s Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2022, Finland’s National Final, Olivera speaks exclusively to EurovisionFun and Apostolos Bogiannos and Apostolis Matamis.

Olivera is among the seven finalists of the national final of Finland for Eurovision 2022 and she will try to represent her country with the song “Thank God I’m an Atheist“.

I always considered competing in UMK but with the appropriate song. And now this showed up  and I think I have to pass a deep message.  As a person that is not so religious, I believe that we can’t know if there is afterlife. No one can answer this question with certainty. I doesn’t matter where everyone believes in, the only thing that matters is having a important life, that no one guarantees will last forever. We must look today, at the people we have close to us and do whatever pleases us, express our love and be good people. I wrote “Thank God I’m an Atheist” wanting to pass this message to the world and especially those who make this kind of thought about life. I didn’t submitted to UMK from the start. My win in the national final would be amazing but what matters the most for me is to manage to make the world express through this.

Asked about her staging of the song in the national final Olivera said:

There is nothing too big or too small. The staging will be based on the story of the song without having something that will distracting from the message I want to pass. I think it will be very beautiful.

Even though she likes every song in UMK 2022, the ones that stand out for her are those of Tommi LäntinenCyan Kicks and Isaac Sene.

Her favorite Finish entries are those of Vicky Rosti & Boulevard (1987) and Paradise Oskar (2011) while from the contest in general the entry that stands out for her is Loreen (Sweden 2012).

If she could pick a Eurostar to collaborate that would be Måneskin.

Sometime before the end of the interview, Olivera offered us a part of her song acapella

Finland: Interview with Cyan Kicks | The right time for Eurovision and “Hurricane”! (Video)

Following their selection for this year’s national final in Finland, Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2022, Cyan Kicks talk exclusively to EurovisionFun, Apostolos Bogiannos and Apostolis Matamis.

Cyan Kicks are among the seven finalists in Finland‘s national final for Eurovision 2022, and will try to represent their country with the song “Hurricane”.

We had been thinking about participating in UMK for four years but we never felt confident about it. This year we felt stronger since we have already released several songs. We have long wanted to write a song that would push us far as a band and as individuals and that’s how Hurricane came about. It happened completely naturally. We are very proud of it.

Regarding the stage presentation of the song in the national final, they state that:

We can’t say much. All we can say is that something very special and magical is going to happen that you are definitely not expecting. Something you don’t expect to see from a rock band. It will be a surprise!

Even though they like all the songs from UMK 2022, they like more the ones by Bess and Isaac Sene.

Their favourite Finnish entry is that of Lordi (2006), while from the competition in general they single out Loreen (Sweden 2012) and ABBA (Sweden 1974).

Just before the end of the interview, Cyan Kicks shared with us an acapella part of their participation.

Finland: Vesala and Mmiisas to Host UMK 2022!

Finnish national broadcaster, Yle has revealed Vesala and Mmiisas as hosts of  Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2022.

Vesala is the stage name of Paula Vesala who started off her career as a member of a band PMMP. In 2015 she started to perform as a soloist and she released an album named Vesala which went platinum and reached number 1 on the Finnish Albums Chart in 2016. She will also be performing as the interval act in the final with the choreography by Natasha Lomm.

“At UMK, I kind of went all in, because I doesn’t feel like I’m a presenter. But I look forward to great performances at UMK and most of all the moment when we get to ask the international juries for points.”

Miisa Rotola Pukkila, better known as Mmiisas, is a Youtuber and influencer. Since starting her Youtube channel in 2013, she currently has 380,000 subscribers and 440,000 Instagram followers, making her one of the biggest influencers in Finland.

“When I heard about the possibility of presenting, I burst into tears and the ground went from under my feet. This is an incredibly great opportunity for me and as a Eurovision fan it is great to get to experience UMK on the ground. I am fascinated by the magical atmosphere of live broadcasts.”

Both presenters have been following Eurovision for a long time. Vesala explains:

“I’ve been watching Eurovision since I was a child. I also attended shows like Popstars, as music shows have always fascinated me. Sometimes I still watch Katri Helena’s perfomance of “Katson sineen taivaan” from 1979. It’s a perfect performance! I also remember 1985 fondly, as I recorded it on a VHS tape.”

Mmiisas added:

“For me, Eurovision is the highlight of spring and a sign of the beginning of summer. I got excited about Eurovision properly at the age of 11 after Lordi won. At home, we always watch together and give scores to all of the participants. The most impressive of all was “Molitva” by Marija Šerifović.”

Vesala and Mmiisas are both looking forward to what they promise to be a spectacular show. Vesala said:

“I have been following Finland’s Eurovision qualifiers for decades with slightly different feelings. Eurovision was once considered a death kiss for a career, but now it is of interest to everyone. I am proud of UMK’s production team, who has made the show high-quality and interesting. It’s amazing how this has become such a great event!”

Mmiisas also praised the competitors and the show:
