Moldova: Zdob Zi Zdub are the only artists to have qualified from three semifinals!

Apart from Ukraine, which remains the only country in the competition that has never been eliminated in the semifinals, another interesting statistic from yesterday is coming from the representatives of Moldova, Zdob Zi Zdub. They are the only artists in the history of the institution who have managed to qualify from the semifinal to the final three times!

Zdob și Zdub represented Moldova in the country’s maiden run in 2005. From the only semi-final at the time, the folklore band passed comfortably, finishing second with “Boonika bate doba“. Then in the final they also went famously, as they finally finished in sixth place.

In 2011 they returned to the competition with “So Lucky”. Despite their marginal qualification (10th place), in the final they won the 12th place, which is not bad!

Zdob Zi Zdub made history last night, since with the qualification of “Trenulețul”, they are the only artists who managed to qualify from three semifinals!

Eurovision 2022: Jury Show of the First Semi-Final!

One day before the actual shows the so-called Jury Show happens which isn’t visible to the usual audience (only to those who received press accreditation and to the experts). The Jury Show of the First Semi-Final took place today. Professional jurors have already ranked all 17 acts of today’s show.

Albania

Very sensual and sexual performance with a good camerawork. Ronela is very charismatic and it looked like a worthy opener. The choreography was fierce. Overall, it was a great performance. Let’s see whether juries liked it or not.

Latvia

Amazing and very energetic performance from Citi Zeni. The camerawork is on point and vocally it was perfect. Is it a song that would be appreciated by juries? No clue.

Lithuania

Elegant, minimalistic but impactful performance from Monika Liu. Stunned by this.

Switzerland

Visually – gorgeous, vocally – I wouldn’t really say.

Slovenia

It was fun, although the soloist got lost in the light! Vocally excellent, nothing else to add.

Ukraine

Timofiy improved a LOT. Energetic, impactful and mesmerising performance from Kalush Orchestra. One of the bests, for sure.

A break before Bulgaria

Bulgaria

This staging is exactly what a rock song needs. One of the best vocals.

Netherlands

Very minimalistic and simple staging. S10 was nervous, hopefully she’ll be better for the actual show.

Moldova

It’s indeed fun. Personally enjoyed this one a lot. The audience did it too.

Portugal

Very emotional and atmospheric. The staging is perfection.

Croatia

Such a cute performance from Mia! Amazing camerawork and excellent vocals. Croatian was added to the song (she sung the last chorus in Croatian completely).

Denmark

Great performance, nothing else to say.

There’s a break after Denmark. We see some from Sunday’s Turquoise Carpet.

Austria

Vocally not really great, but it has a very effective staging!

Iceland

Atmospheric performance and a very easy song to listen to. Impressive!

Greece

Massive winner vibes there…

Norway

Such an astounding performance from the wolves from Norway! Enjoyed it a lot.

Armenia

Flawless vocals and fascinating staging.

We see the recap of all 17 songs once all artists finished performing.

Dardust is on the stage playing a drum. Sophie and the giants are on the stage. Tons of pyro as we see Daniel Benassi at the back of the stage at a DJ booth.

A tribute to Raffaella Carra. Laura talks about her and then Fiesta is played!

Afterwards the second recap is on!

Diodato performs his ESC 2020 song – Fai Rumore. In the dark, he sits and plays at his piano and sings. A choir softly sings along in the chorus. Diodato starts off behind the stage and is on the front side with lots of people dancing around him on stage in smoke. Perfection.

Alessandro chats with the JESC 2021 winner – with Maléna. We see a small clip of her JESC victory and of her song. Promo clip for Yerevan is shown as well right after the clip.

Mika has a conversation with Alvan & Ahez and Mahmood&Blanco.

France

In the beginning it was very shaky, but then everything went very well. Energetic, impressive and outstanding performance from France! WOW!

Italy

Vocally they’ve improved a lot since the second rehearsal. They don’t engage with camera which makes it at some point better. Brilliant performance!

The announcement of the qualifiers right after Italy’s performance!

The qualifiers of the Jury Show were:

  • Latvia
  • Portugal
  • Lithuania
  • Norway
  • Denmark
  • Greece
  • Armenia
  • Switzerland
  • Austria
  • Netherlands

P.S these are not the real results.

The actual show will be broadcasted tomorrow.

Eurovision 2022: Moldova’s Second Rehearsal!

Coming up is Moldova with Zdob şi Zdub & Advahov Brothers with their song ‘Trenuleţul’. Moldova brought its big train energy to the Eurovision stage during their first rehearsal. The staging features full neon on the lighting and the graphics, and there are even a couple of little dance routines in the chorus. It’s about a 3-minute joyful chaos that seems to have received a variety of reactions. With their second rehearsal they will try to ensure everything works fine, in view of the upcoming semi-final on Tuesday.

The Second Rehearsal

Moldova brings a big party at the Eurovision stage during their second rehearsal. The performance starts with a fast close shot on one of the guitarists, who wears sunglasses along with 1 more group member. At first, yellow is the dominant colour of the stage, while purple becomes the key colour of the perfomance along the way. The band is wearing traditional multi-coloured clothes. The lead singer is dressed in red and blue with a black hat. In front of the drummer there is a puppet with a huge grey beard and a big hat. There are blue, red and purple colours in the sun’s LED screen. Purple lights come away from the sun. There is also use of the LED floor. All the members are grooving and hopping in the rhythm of the song. There are enough wide shots, as also shots from above showing all the group members and the LED floor graphics. Towards the end there is a key change in the song, one of the guitarists lies down the floor playing the guitar at the same time and there are visible coloured lined graphics. At the end, the lead singer with 2 more band members that wear white-and-black clothes take advantage of the B stage, where they finish their performance. The 2 hallways of the B stage become elevated, in the bottom of which we can distinguish the same coloured lined graphics as in the main stage before. The performance ends with the waterfall turning into purple colour and the 2 members of the group in the B stage getting near to the singer.

Eurovision 2022: Moldova’s First Rehearsal!

After S10’s deep ballad, Zdob şi Zdub & Advahov Brothers, Moldova’s participants, are here to make a party at the Eurovision stage with their song “Trenulețul“.

About Zdob şi Zdub & Advahov Brothers

Zdob şi Zdub are a band who have become just as infamous for their spectacular live shows, as they have for their catchy, sing-along tunes. The band have been around since 1994, honing their craft with a near constant schedule of gigs, tours and festival appearances, and managing to release 10 albums in the process.

Their debut at Eurovision was also Moldova’s very first outing at the Contest, at which Zdob și Zdub gave their nation a 6th place finish with the song Boonika Bate Toba. They were back again in 2011 with So Lucky, progressing to the grand final once more and giving Moldova a 12th place result to be proud of.

The band will be joined in Turin by the Advahov Brothers: two musicians who are so popular in Moldova, they even have their own folk orchestra, frequently playing at sold-out events across their country. Zdob şi Zdub & Advahov Brothers plan on releasing a whole album of material together.

The Rehearsal

After a long day in the arena, a bit of folklore and rock ‘n’ roll is the perfect way to wrap up today’s rehearsals. This song is SUCH fun, and Zdob şi Zdub & Advahov Brothers are bring big train energy to the Pala Olimpico stage.

They’ve gone full neon on the lighting and the graphics, AND there are even a couple of little dance routines in the chorus. It’s the first time we’ve seen the B Stage used today – there are a couple of drawbridges over the waterfall that go up and down.

This is three minutes of joyful chaos, but we are very much on board.

Below you can watch a small clip from Moldova’s first rehearsal from Tik Tok:
