Eurovision 2024: Slovenia demands further scrutiny to the EBU!

Slovenia joins the countries that are demanding accountability to the EBU.  Several countries expressed dissatisfaction about how the EBU handled conflicts during the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.  And in the case of Slovenia, they are planning to send a written questionnaire to the EBU demanding explanations.

Public broadcaster RTVSLO confirmed they are contacting the EBU regarding the organization of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.

The Slovenian broadcaster is working on a “document in which they will ask the EBU officials some questions about the performance of the Eurovision Song Contest”.

After this action, RTVSLO is joining other delegations that are dissatisfied with the way the European Broadcasting Union handled the Eurovision Song Contest.  For instance, Portuguese broadcaster RTP demanded a meeting with the European Broadcasting Union demanding explanations to the incidents that took place in the final.  The letter is signed by other broadcasters including France, Spain, Croatia, and Norway.

Schinas’ letter to the EBU: “Who is the Eurovision Song Contest for?”

European Commission’s Vice President Margaritis Schinas sent a letter to the management of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) today, expressing his regret over the prohibition of the EU flag at the Eurovision Song Contest final and demanding explanations.

As the Commissioner responsible, among other things, for cultural policy in the EU, Schinas highlights in his letter to the EBU, that for almost seven decades, Eurovision has embodied the values of diversity and cultural exchange – values shared and supported by the EU. He further expresses “regret” for “the policy applied by the EBU this year to prohibit participants from waving the EU flag during the Eurovision Song Contest final.”

“Such actions have cast a shadow over what is intended to be a joyful event for people across Europe and the world to come together in celebration. Less than a month before the European elections and in times of geopolitical turmoil, with the EU being targeted by malicious and authoritarian actors, the decision of the EBU has contributed to the devaluation of a symbol that unites all Europeans,” stated Schinas in his letter. Conversely, he points out that at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, “the IOC allowed the display of EU flags in all venues and award ceremonies.”

“The inconsistency in the EBU‘s stance has left me and many millions of viewers wondering what and whose Eurovision Song Contest is,” emphasizes the Commissioner, calling on the EBU management to explain the rationale behind this decision.

The response from the European Broadcasting Union remains to be seen, with voices against it growing stronger day by day after the events in Malmö.

Controversy Erupts as EU Flags Banned at Eurovision Final

The European Broadcasting Union’s move to prohibit EU flags during Saturday’s Eurovision final has sparked outrage, with Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas denouncing it as a boon to “enemies of Europe.”

Expressing bewilderment at the decision, Schinas criticized the timing of the ban amidst upcoming European elections and amidst demonstrations in Tbilisi supporting EU democratic values. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s spokesperson also lamented the ban, highlighting the significance of the EU flag alongside national flags on public buildings.

“It’s mind-blowing, what the EBU did,” Schinas told POLITICO’s Brussels Playbook after the song contest’s widely watched conclusion was overshadowed by political controversy.

Schinas questioned the rationale behind the ban and its beneficiaries, suggesting it primarily benefits Euroskeptics and foes of Europe.

“I cannot find the logical explanation for why the EBU is doing this. And what does this serve?”

“Less than a month from the European elections, who wins from banning the EU flag from Eurovision?” the commissioner added. “Only the Euroskeptics and the enemies of Europe.”

The EBU defended its policy, stating it remained consistent with previous years, permitting only flags of participating countries and pride flags. However, Schinas vowed to address the issue with EBU management, seeking clarification.

“I will talk to them. I won’t let this pass,” he said. “I will seek explanations and clarifications.”

In the midst of the controversy, Nemo, a Swiss rapper, emerged as the winner of Eurovision 2024, delivering a powerful message about self-discovery as a non-binary person.

Despite the festivities, this year’s competition in Malmö, Sweden, was overshadowed by geopolitical tensions, with protests and mixed reactions during performances. Reflecting on the event, Nemo humorously noted the mishap of breaking their trophy and suggested Eurovision could use some “fixing” too.

Breaking News: Slimane delivers message about peace during his performance!

The on-going afternoon preview of the final show has back-to-back surprises for us.

Slimane stopped his performance and delivered a statement instead of singing the last part of his song. The message was:

“When I was a child, I dreamed about music, I dreamed about this dream to be a singer to sing peace. We need to be united by music, yes, but with love and peace.”

At some point, it seemed like his microphone feed was turned off, but then it was on and we could clearly hear him deliver his message. Up until the time of writing, there was no official statement by the EBU about whether there will be implications on the French entry due to this move by the French participant.

We will keep you up to date for more information, stay tuned.

The competition part

Sweden

Another professional performance by Marcus & Martinus. They are superstars and we can all tell! I can see a top ten coming for Sweden.

Ukraine

A touching performance by Jerry Heil and Alyona Alyona. They are contenders to win the contest and every performance of them is magical.

Germany

Amazing vocals and a fiery performance, but they are not enough. The song feels bland.

Luxembourg

A great comeback for Luxembourg. Tali looks and sounds amazing. We hope all the best for the Duchy!

Israel

Another touching performance by Eden. This is how a ballad can be performed in a modern way. Eden is not separated by her dancers, they are all a part of the same “symphony”.

Lithuania

Love the performance. No one in the audience can stay still when Silvester performs and his energy is haunting.

Spain

The crowd goes crazy for “ZORRA”. The fans love it and every performance is stunning.

Estonia

Not a fan of this entry but the crowd also loves it.

Ireland

Bambie did not take the stage today as an incident happened. Another performance of Bambie was played instead.

Latvia

Another good performance by Dons, no changes in this rehearsal.

Greece

Marina sounded and looked great today. Despite having a cold, her vocals were on point.

United Kingdom

Olly gave a great performance and despite a minor mistake in the shots, this looked great.

Norway

Gåte never fail to deliver a great performance, and so they did during this rehearsal. Big applause at the Arena!

Italy

Angelina and her dancers are wearing the black outfits and honestly this looks great. Bravo Italia!

Serbia

Vocally on point, Teya gave another great performance.

Finland

This entry might not be everyone’s cup of tea but the crowd in the arena seems to love it!

Portugal

Minimalistic perfection. Great vocals by Iolanda and an applause at the Press Centre!

Armenia

Such a catchy entry. Audience was singing along! Armenia bringing the great vibes that we need.

Cyprus

Only 17 years old and such a class act. Silia gave -another- great performance!

Switzerland

Nemo is just incredible. This performance is just breathtaking. Definitely a contender for the victory.

Slovenia

A solid performance by Raiven. Vocally on point.

Croatia

In every single performance, Baby Lasagna nailed it. Is this the Eurovision 2024 winner? We will find out tonight!

Georgia

Vocals? On point. Visuals? On point. Georgia is deservingly back in the Grand Final.

France

In the middle of the performance, Slimane stopped singing and gave a message of peace and unity. Big applause at the Press Centre.

Austria

Kaleen sounded and looked great. A great entry to close the Grand Final.

Interval Acts

Abba appeared via holograms leading to Charlotte Perrelli, Carola and Conchita singing “Waterloo”!

The results

These results are neither valid nor real, but they come about in order to serve the rehearsal’s purposes, but the winner was Estonia.

Netherlands: Joost Klein questioned by Swedish police after complaint from SVT employee!

Today is the night of the final and it is still unclear what the EBU will decide regarding the Netherlands’ participation in the Grand Final.  According to Dutch public television, Joost Klein was questioned by the police, following a complaint by an employee of SVT.

According to the police report, Joost Klein threatened her, during the first dress rehearsal, on Friday, May 11.

Police say Joost Klein was questioned late last night. The woman who filed the complaint was also questioned. The case has now been handed over to the prosecutor. The case can take weeks to settle.

Therefore, we can not predict what will be the final decision regarding the Netherlands’ participation in tonight’s Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest. The managing director of Dutch public television has arrived in Malmö and is in talks with the EBU to decide what will eventually happen with their participation.

We remind you that yesterday, Joost Klein was not able to perform his song for the jury because of the ongoing investigation by the EBU.  Instead, the video of his performance from the Semi-final was shown.  By the time this article was written a final decision has not been made.  The online voting for the rest of the world has not started as a consequence.

We will keep you informed once we get the final outcome of this case and the official announcements from the EBU.
