Czechia: Over 45.000 viewers watched ESCZ 2024!

This year ESCZ, the national final through which Czechia’s entry for the 68th Eurovision Song Contest was selected, was broadcast live on TV by Czech broadcaster ČT art instead of being streamed online for the first time in fifteen years. This move was well received by the television audience, as ESCZ drew in over 45,000 viewers.

This number corresponds to 1.22% of the total viewers.

Aiko, with the song “Pedestal”, was the ESCZ winner and, as a result, the Czech representative in Eurovision 2024.

By collecting nearly twice as many votes as Elly, who came in second in the final rankings, Aiko was able to get the ticket for Malmö through the voting of the international audience rather than the Czech one.

The detailed results of ESCZ 2024:
  1. Aiko – 23.898
  2. Elly – 12.876
  3. MYDY – 7.031
  4. Tom Sean – 3.500
  5. Lenny – 2.375
  6. Tomas Robin – 1.313
  7. Gianna Lei – 653

Greece: Marina Satti has not listened to all the song submissions yet!

Marina Satti, the Greek representative for the 68th Eurovision Song Contest, discussed her participation in the competition earlier today on the ANT1 show “To Proino”.

She stated in the interview that she hasn’t listened to all the songs that have been submitted to ERT before discussing her choice to take part in the competition this year.

She stated the following when the journalist asked her about the songs that were submitted:

I have listened some songs but not all of them.

We haven’t made a decision yet, but we’ve received songs in a variety of styles.

The composer of Loreen’s two entries has sent in his proposal, as far as I know.

Eurovision is a musical celebration. Our aim is to find the best song.

Why did you decide to represent Greece at Eurovision?

Why not? This is what we do. We compose music. We sing, dance, travel and take part in festivals.

Did you respond right away when the proposal was made to you, or did you need some time to consider it?

I held off on saying yes at first. In past years, there had been conversations about Eurovision. I knew it would happen one day.

At the beginning, as in the previous times, I said “next year”.

Netherlands: AVROTROS responds to the Ukrainian complaints about Joost Klein!

The Dutch public broadcaster AVROTROS has responded to the information that emerged from the Ukrainian public broadcaster yesterday regarding the connection between Russia and the artist selected to represent the Netherlands in Eurovision 2024.

Is Joost Klein pro-Russian?

According to an article published on the official website of Ukrainian public television, Joost Klein‘s discography includes a song that embodies his love for Russia. The song in question is named “Jackass”, and it was published on March 11, 2022, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It was recorded in cooperation with Russian musician CMH. The lyrics are seen as contentious as well. For instance, there is controversy over the lines listed below:

Hi, my name is Joost Klein

I love Russia man,

I really wanna marry a Russian woman

I want a Russian lady

I want some Russian babies

Apart from his collaboration with CMH, Joost Klein has also worked with Russian Village Boys, a rave group based in St. Petersburg, on a track that was released in February 2023.

Furthermore, while the Russo-Ukrainian War was still going on in July 2022, Joost Klein performed live in St. Petersburg.

AVROTROS’ response

According to an AVTROTROS spokesperson who responded through De Telegraaf, Joost Klein has never made any political remarks that support Russia.

Joost never used his music to express political views.

The Russian Village Boys have actually stated their opposition to the war, as numerous X users have brought to light. Their Instagram post indicates that they departed Russia shortly after Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

A few days earlier Joost Klein was announced by AVROTROS as the representative of the Netherlands in Eurovision 2024. More details about his participation will be announced in the coming months.

Iceland: The Association of Composers and Lyricists calls on RÚV to abstain from Eurovision 2024 because of Israel!

The Association of Composers and Lyricists of Iceland opposes the country’s participation in Eurovision 2024 unless Israel is disqualified.

Last night, through its official Facebook account, the Association of Composers and Lyricists of Iceland, F.T.T. (Félag tónskálda og textahöfunda) announced that they have sent a request to the radio director and RÚV board stating the following:

The board of FTT tonight sent this request to the radio director and board of RUV:

Reykjavik 11 December 2023

The board of FTT, an association of composers and lyricists, calls on RÚV not to participate in Eurovision in 2024 unless Israel is denied participation in the competition on the same grounds as Russia in the last competition. We all have a duty to take a stand against war and the killing of civilians and innocent children. We always have the choice not to put our name to such things, whether we are individuals or state institutions. We owe it to the nations that act with military force to not share with them in an event that is always characterized by joy and optimism.

The board of FTT:

Bragi Valdimar Skúlason, chairman
Védís Hervör Árnadóttir, vice-chairman
Sóley Stefánsdóttir
Ragnhei ður Grondal
Andri Olafsson
Hallur Ingólfsson
Hildur Kristín Stefánsdóttir

It is not the first time that Iceland has expressed discomfort in issues concerning Israel, recalling that in 2019 there was opposition to hosting the competition in Jerusalem, but also the representatives of the country themselves that year took a political position during the announcement of the results on the night of the final. Any response from the country’s public broadcaster is awaited with interest.

Do you believe that the aforementioned request will have an impact on Iceland’s participation? Let us know your thought in the comments below.

Finland: UMK 2024 will be presented by Pilvi Hämäläinen, Benjamin, and Viivi Pumpanen!

UMK 2024 will be hosted by Pilvi Hämäläinen, Benjamin, and Viivi Pumpanen, as announced by the Finnish broadcaster Yle.

Following the announcement, Pilvi Hämäläinen, a well-known figure in Finland thanks to the comedy program Putous (Comedy Combat), stated:

Over the past few years, UMK has become something truly special, and last spring’s competition got me thinking again about how cool it would be to be part of that. I decided to stop just sitting around at home and offered to be a host. Even though I have a lot of experience with live broadcasts, being a host is completely new and different to me.

Benjamin participated in the UMK last year and placed last. He returns to UMK this year, this time in the role of host.

Last year’s UMK was an unbelievable experience, and I wanted to be a part of the magic this year too. As a major Eurovision fan, being able to host the UMK is a dream come true.

Out of the three hosts, Viivi Pumpanen has the most experience. She is eager to take on this challenge since she views UMK as a world-class show.

It’s unbelievable that I can help in putting together such an amazing feel-good show for the whole family. The contest is super important for the competitors and viewers, so I can only imagine how it’s going to feel as a host that night. Of course, I’m also looking forward to working with Pilvi and Benjamin – the three of us have such an unbelievably positive vibe.

UMK 2024 will take place on February 10. On January 10 from 20:00 to 21:30 CET, a live TV show will be held to reveal the UMK 2024 participants. The program, which will be available on Yle TV1, Yle Areena, and UMK’s YouTube channel, will have commentary in English, Finnish, and Swedish.

The Netherlands: Joost Klein is off to Eurovision 2024!

Dutch public broadcaster AVROTROS has revealed that Joost Klein will represent the Netherlands at the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö.

The Dutch internal selection procedure

After the submission window closed in early October, the Dutch selection committee was tasked with reviewing over 600 proposals. These 600 entries were whittled down to nine, and finally to five. In order to assess their vocal prowess and prevent a recurrence of the circumstances that led to the nation’s first non-qualification this year after eight years of successful participation in the competition, the five artists were asked to perform their songs live in front of the selection committee. His vocal and performance abilities were therefore taken into consideration when choosing the Dutch representative.

A few words about Joost Klein

Dutch rapper, composer, and former YouTuber Joost Klein was born on November 10, 1997. He is known for his songs “Scandinavian Boy”, “Wachtmuziek” and “Friesenjung“, and his albums M Van Marketing, Albino and 1983. Even though the majority of his tracks are hip-hop, he frequently incorporates electronic music elements into his performances, such as drum and bass, hardstyle, and gabber.

More details will be revealed soon.

You can listen to a sample of his work here:

EBU: Israel’s public broadcaster complies with the rules of Eurovision 2024!

In a public statement to the Belgian newspaper HLN, the EBU comments on its announcement regarding the list of 37 competing countries in Eurovision 2024, with the inclusion of Israel in this list.

The announcement of the list with the 37 competing nations of the 68th Eurovision Song Contest by EBU a few days ago, was a matter of controversy on the social media, since a part of the eurofans considered that Israel should have been disqualified from the upcoming contest.

In fact, there were not a few who compared the case of Russia with that of Israel, accusing the EBU of having double standards in similar cases.

Responding to a relevant question from the Belgian newspaper HLN, the EBU comments that the list of countries that are going to compete in Eurovision 2024 has been approved by the relevant bodies of the association, while regarding Israel it replies that its participation is given, since its public television fully comlies with the competition regulations.

“The EBU’s governing bodies […] reviewed the list of participants and decided that the Israeli public broadcaster complies with all competition rules”

The EBU’s decision is reasonable at this time. It is worth reminding that the case of Russia and Belarus’ disualification are two completely different cases. Russia’s public television was expelled by the EBU due to its use by the Russian government as a propaganda tool in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, violating its territorial integrity. As far as Belarus is conserned, a temporary exclusion from the competition and from the EBU for three years was decided, as a penalty for the attempt of the country’s public television to politicize Eurovision 2021, by sending an entry with clear political lyrics.

The case of Israel has nothing to do with the above, since the war conflict did not start with its own fault on the one hand and on the other hand its war response came as a result of the terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7th.

Since the question around Israel’s inclusion in the upcoming contest was solved, the only thing pending now is whether Romania will manage to be present in Malmö, in May, raising the number of the participating countries to 38.
