Εurovision 2024: 5miinust & Puuluup will not withdraw from the contest!

We are just hours away from the Grand Final and the moment when we will find out the winner of the 68th Eurovision Song Contest. The atmosphere seems to be increasingly tense in Malmö Arena.

As a reminder, the Dutch singer Joost Klein will not be competing in the Grand Final of this year’s contest. According to an EBU statement, the Swedish police investigated a complaint from a female production member, following an incident after Joost’s performance on Thursday in the Second Semi-Final. In fact, despite rumours from international media, the incident has not involved any participant or mission. Thus, the Grand Final of the 68th edition of the competition will be held with 25 countries.

After the exclusion of the Netherlands, in addition to the strong reactions, rumours of other countries withdrawing from the competition in protest began to circulate. The most intense rumour was on social media regarding the Estonian delegation. However, according to exclusive information, the Estonian representatives will compete as usual in tonight’s final, as they continued their preparations and came out in today’s rehearsal of the family show.

Eurovision 2024: Which rehearsal has the most views on TikTok?

Two days ago, the first rehearsals for all 37 entries officially concluded, and today the second rehearsals are expected to be completed, with the Big 5 and the host country Sweden taking the stage at the Malmö Arena for the second time! This means that we are getting closer to the Eurovision week, with the Dress and Jury Rehearsals for the first semi-final starting on Monday.

However, as we know on TikTok, all the first rehearsals are uploaded. Apart from their performances, we’ll also get a sneak peek backstage before they take the stage for the first time in a video of about one minute.

One of the many features of TikTok is the ability to add songs to each user’s video creation. However, the TikTok algorithm is usually able to detect the song used in the video, assign it to the correct track, and then include it in the total number of videos where that sound has been used. Based on this capability, the most popular songs before rehearsals were from the Netherlands and Italy. Will they receive the same promotion as before?

The ranking with all the entries (in brackets will be the day of the rehearsal) based on the increasing number of views after one week from the start of the first rehearsals on TikTok is as follows:

Similarly, from the second semi-final, the following countries will qualify: Netherlands, Greece, Switzerland, Georgia, Israel, Belgium, Armenia, Albania, Latvia, and Austria.

TikTok has played a significant role in the success of Eurovision songs in recent years. For example, Duncan Laurence’s winning entry “Arcade” became a global hit a year after winning the competition when it was used in over a million videos on TikTok. One of the earliest TikTok successes from Eurovision was Getter Jaani’s “Rockefeller Street”, which went viral on the platform in 2018 and has since been used in over two million videos. Let’s not forget that Armenia’s entry in 2022 by Rosa Linn with “Snap” gained over a billion views on the platform. Finally, Norway’s entry last year gained significant worldwide publicity months before the competition week, where it secured fifth place.

Eurovision 2024: Estonia’s Second Rehearsal!

The next country to rehearse is Estonia, represented by 5MIINUST x Puuluup and their song “(nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi“!

Who is 5MIINUST x Puuluup?

The pairing of 5MIINUST x Puuluup is a wildly eclectic collaboration. The former has been a dominating force in pop music in Estonia over the last 6 years and the latter is an award-winning internationally active zombie-folk (if you were to ask them) duo.

Regardless of the perceived differences between genres, the extremes of both acts’ music blend together seamlessly.

5MIINUST regard themselves as bringing the firepower to the collaboration, with plenty of bass. Puuluup, meanwhile, contribute some extremely rare wooden lyra (Talharpa) melodies with which to offer to the world a totally fresh soundscape.

5MIINUST x Puuluup won Eesti Laul 2024, the Estonian national selection for Eurovision 2024, contributing to the Eurovision history with the longest Eurovision song title.

The Rehearsal

Estonia are rehearsing on stage next, and bringing plenty of their trademark energy.

We’ve seen some fun and eclectic collaborations at Eurovision over the years, and this year’s entry from Estonia is no exception – 5MIINUST are a well-known pop/hip hop group in Estonia, and Puuluup describe themselves as ‘a zombie folk duo’, with their song (nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi, which translates as ‘we (really) don’t know anything about (these) drugs’.

The band all look very stylish in black suits with varying quantities of sleeves. The whole performance is a heady and joyful mix of thumping beats, traditional talharpa melodies and the 5MIINUST x Puuluup aerobic dance routine.

Also the CUBES are down, lit up with more cube graphics that change colour through the performance to match the LED wall behind. A neon cube extravaganza, and a LOT of fun.

Estonia’s Dress Rehearsal is taking place on Wednesday, 8th of May!

Eurovision 2024: Which rehearsal had the most views on the fourth day?

Yesterday, first rehearsals continued dynamically, with the Malmö Arena hosting the last eight countries of the second semifinal! Be sure to also read our article from yesterday regarding the views of the eight countries that completed their rehearsals on Monday.

In less than 24 hours (May 1, 2024, time 16:35 CET), since the first clip from the rehearsals was uploaded, we have a indicative sample of which rehearsal was favored by the audience (here it should be noted that the videos were uploaded one after the other with a one and a half hour interval and there was a significant delay in their publication).

The rehearsals that had the most views are:

  1. Netherlands: Joost – Europapa – 1.8 million views
  2. Belgium: Mustii – Before The Party Is Over – 450 thousand views
  3. Georgia: Nutsa – FireFighter – 426 thousand views
  4. Israel: Eden Golan – Hurricane – 415.9 thousand views
  5. Latvia: DonsHollow – 297 thousand views
  6. Estonia: 5MIINUST x Puuluup – (Nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi – 206 thousand views
  7. San Marino: Megara11:11 – 183.5 thousand views
  8. Norway: GåteUlveham – 178.2 thousand views

With this small sample, we can infer that:

  • The Netherlands is indeed one of the major contenders for victory, hence rightfully gathering so many views. As it has made a huge leap, leaving Belgium behind by four times in views. Joost is expected to soon surpass Greece in views, but for now Marina Satti holds the lead.
  • There is a significant gap between the fourth and fifth positions, indicating that the last four countries did not impress much with their stage presence.
  • It’s surprising that Norway ranks last in views, considering it has the most unique song and vocals of the competition. There is a possibility of a recovery in views since their rehearsal was delayed in being published.

The top five countries with the most views from the four days are as follows:

  1. Greece: Marina Satti – ZARI – 2.3 million views
  2. Netherlands: Joost – Europapa – 1.8 million views
  3. Poland: LUNA – The Tower –1.3 million views
  4. Serbia: Teya Dora – Ramonda – 929.1 thousand views
  5. Ukraine: alyona alyona & Jerry Heil – Teressa & Maria – 876.6 thousand views

TikTok has played a significant role in the success of Eurovision songs in recent years. Estonia: Eesti Laul 2024 Semi-Final Review & Results!

The Semi-Final of Eesti Laul 2024, the selection process of Estonia in the Eurovision Song Contest, has just finished!

In today’s Semi-Final, only five out of fifteen contestants are allowed to qualify for the Grand Final. Then the qualifiers will meet the other five automatic finalists on February 17, where they will be competing for the title of the Estonian representative at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024!

About the show

The presenters of the evening were Grete Kuld and Tõnis Niinemets. The show took place in the sports hall of the University of Tartu.

Here are the 15 songs that competed today for the remaining five spots:

  1. 5miinust ja Puuluup – “(nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi”
  2. Inga – “No Dog On a Leash”
  3. Ollie – “My Friend”
  4. Yonna  – “I Don’t Know About You”
  5. Peter Põder “Korra veel”
  6. Multikas, Ewert Sundja – “Oblivion”
  7. Traffic – “Wunderbar”
  8. Ingmar –“Dreaming”
  9. Anet Vaikmaa – “Serotoniin”
  10. Laura – “Here’s Where I Draw the Line”
  11. Sofia Rubina – “Be Good”
  12. Antsud – “Vetevaim”
  13. Silver Jusilo – “Lately”
  14. Cecilia –“FOMO”
  15. Ewert and The Two Dragons – “Hold Me Now”

The review of the competing performances:

1. 5miinust ja Puuluup – “(nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi”

Rating: 6/10

While being the favorites to win Eesti Laul, they did not fascinate or surprise me. For some people this might’ve been great; however, it felt a little forced for me. It is still fun! The staging was definitely messy. However, personally I believe this is the best choice for Estonia, as the European audience hasn’t heard the Estonian language for a while and this could score decent with the televote. Can this repeat Alika’s success? It might but it is questionable; nevertheless if possible, then it could be the other way round (strong tele, poor jury support).

2. Inga – “No Dog On a Leash”

Rating; 5/10

A cute song; nevertheless coming after the frontrunners of the show, this felt like a filler.

3. Ollie – “My Friend”

Rating: 5/10

The second favorite to win Eesti Laul! Not a huge fan of the song, as I believe this is the type of rock that could be considered generic. Great stage presence, but it felt very basic and something that we have seen million times at ESC.

4. Yonna  – “I Don’t Know About You”

Rating: 5/10

I found the performance a little boring. However, I would like to note that she should return to Eesti Laul, as there is definitely some potential!

5. Peter Põder “Korra veel”

Rating: 4/10

Another boring and dated song. The same can be said about the performance as well.

6. Multikas, Ewert Sundja – “Oblivion”

Rating: 7/10

The strongest for me so far. The song is really catchy, even though a bit generic. The performance was not boring, however I am absolutely sure that this is not the song that Estonia should send to Eurovision.

7. Traffic – “Wunderbar”

Rating: 4/10

Cute song and performance, but felt like a filler. Boring.

8. Ingmar –“Dreaming”

Rating: 2/10

Very dated, straight from a cheap fabricated movie. The singer has excellent vocal range and capacity and definitely deserved to sing a better song and have at least a better staging. Felt like a 15th placer in the semi-final of Eurovision 2007.

9. Anet Vaikmaa – “Serotoniin”

Rating : 4/10

If Hannah Montana was Estonian. Great charisma and energy on stage though.

10. Laura – “Here’s Where I Draw the Line”

Rating: 9/10

Obviously this is a generic song and the weakest attempt of Laura’s; however, what a DIVA! The shower effect looked surprisingly professional too. Did not get bored at all. Laura herself is a show!

11. Sofia Rubina – “Be Good”

Rating: 7/10

I am really surprised that this is last in the semi-final odds. Excellent vocals and great staging!

12. Antsud – “Vetevaim”

Rating: 4/10

Objectively one of the weakest songs and performances.

13. Silver Jusilo – “Lately”

Rating: 3/10

Very boring. Does nothing at all.

14. Cecilia –“FOMO”

Rating: 9.5/10

EXCELLENT performance! Cecilia delivered perfect vocals and stage presence. The song is also the best one, according to my personal taste. Although some camera angles were questionable and I would change the choreography a little bit, this was too entertaining regardless. Wow! Hope she makes it to the superfinal at least. Cecilia needs to represent Estonia in the upcoming years, if not this year.

15. Ewert and The Two Dragons – “Hold Me Now”

Rating: 4/10

I was not moved by this. Cecilia seemed to be better I believe.

The three songs voted the most by the committee were:

  • Inga – “No Dog On a Leash”

Estonia: ERR to update Eesti Laul for 2024!

ERR is starting their Eurovision preparations for 2024.  As it is a tradition in the baltic country, Eesti Laul will again be their national final to pick their representative.

However, we can already expect to see some changes in the show.  According to chief of ERR entertainment programs Ms. Karmel Killandi Eesti Laul will get an update that will include the format of the national final and the Estonian team behind the show.

Every big project needs to be re-evaluated and updated after a while. Eesti Laul is even more so, because on the one hand it is the biggest and most important music show in Estonia and on the other hand it is the national selection for Eurovision.

For instance, it is now confirmed that chief producer for Eesti Laul, Tomi Rahula is leaving his position.  Mr. Rauhula was the producer of Eesti Laul for five years.  During the last five years the semi-finals for Eesti Laul have been held in Tartu and Viimsi.

According to ERR, one of the biggest accomplishments of former chief producer Tomi Rauhula was to bring the Eurovision national final to the city of Tartu and to include a neutral jury for the selection and to establish links between Estonian and foreign musicians.

We will have to wait for more details about the changes in the format of Eesti Laul 2024 which are currently going underway:

“Our biggest wish is to offer the best platform for Estonian musicians and experiences for viewers. We will open detailed plans in a few months, but I hope that artists and songwriters have already started writing new songs for the competition.”
