Romania: Theodor Andrei speaks out against TVR and shares his experience in the contest.

Theodor Andrei represented Romania at Eurovision 2023 with the song “D.G.T. (Off and On)” however he did not make it to the Grand Final.

During an interview with Romanian artist The Watcher, for the YouTube series Fără Perdea, Theodor said that as a big fan of the contest, he was excited to perform on the Liverpool stage. However, he spoke about how his dream slowly but surely turned into a nightmare due to his partnership with Romanian national broadcaster TVR.

Theodor explained how he had been thinking about taking part in Eurovision for several years, trying to find the right song. He confessed that hearing thousands of voices singing the Romanian lyrics of “D.G.T. (Off and On)” during the Eurovision pre-parties in Amsterdam and London remains one of his favourite achievements of his career so far. But he then claimed that TVR, which is responsible for the Romanian delegation at Eurovision, turned his dream into a nightmare.

Theodor Andrei speaks out against TVR.

In Selecția Națională, the selection show for Eurovision in Romania, Theodor participated by presenting an original set he designed himself. He had the intention to modify and improve it for Eurovision, however TVR seems to have rejected all the ideas and suggestions he submitted. The set he presented in Liverpool was designed exclusively by the TVR team, as seen by the viewers. It is also claimed that the broadcaster imposed a slower revamp of the song “D.G.T. (Off and On)” on Theodor, which did not meet his wishes and ideas.

According to Theodor, the budget given to TVR for Eurovision was not properly utilized for his entry, and TVR also refused to fund a music video for his song. So he decided to create a self-financed video. However, this caused further tensions between him and the national broadcaster. Theodor claims that TVR banned him from publishing it and even threatened him and his family. The music video was a success and sparked criticism against TVR.

So far, Romania’s national broadcaster has not responded to Theodor’s accusations.

Theodor will appear in London in July for a concert organised by Platform ’96. Theodor will perform at Stage 002 on 28 July. The event will take place at The Water Rats, a renowned venue steeped in musical history. Bob Dylan, The Pogues and Oasis performed their first concerts at this venue. Theodor will be joined on stage by British alternative rock band Glass Bridges and London-based rock band Minerva.

Eurovision 2023: Romania’s Second Rehearsal!

Coming up next for his second rehearsal is Theodor Andrei from Romania, who is going to perform his song named “D.G.T. (Off and On)“.

Who is Theodor Andrei ?

Theodor Andrei was born in Bucharest, Romania in 2004 and he is just 18 years old! He became widely known by participating in the talent show “Vocea Romanei Junior”, which is the Romanian version of “The Voice Kids”, back in 2017, when he managed to reach the semifinals. Later, in 2020, he took part in the Romanian “X Factor”, where he stopped at bootcamps. Two years later, his debut album named “Fragil” was realised.

After having won the national final of Romania, among eleven artists, Theodor Andrei took the ticket for Liverpool no matter the fact that he was not consiered as the favorite one in advance. However, the public who were 100% in charge of the final result gave him the win.

The Rehearsal

Unfortunately this year, accredited journalists don’t get the chance to watch the first and second rehearsals, so we only get the information and content that the organizers officially release to the public.

Romania is surprising us with the second outfit change of the day. The yellow outfit we saw on Monday’s first rehearsal is now changed to a pink one, which organizers describe as the same candyfloss pink as the one used for Reiley from Denmark. Also the Pikachu socks have been replaced by Spongebob ones!

The live version of the song is completely different from the recorded one – the first half of the song is only accompanied by a guitar and Theodor’s voice, almost acoustic. The second half is stronger, with a clear rock tempo in a performance that feels much more intimate, with Theodor bringing ALL his energy to the stage. The finale is quite impressive, as Theodor is joined by a dancer.

In the afternoon, after the completion of all the rehearsals, a recap video will be released with short excerpts from the footage of all the second rehearsals!

The Dress Rehearsal for Romania and the rest of Semi Final 2 will be held on the 10th of May.

Romania: Theodor Andrei filmed his postcard for Eurovision 2023!

Theodor Andrei was selected to represent Romania at Eurovision 2023 after winning Selecția Națională 2023. He came second in the telephone vote and first in the online vote.

The song that Theodor will perform in Liverpool is called “D.G.T. (Off and on)“. It has been written by Mikail Jahed, Luca de Mezzo, Luca Udățeanu and Theodor himself. “D.G.T.” is a pun on the Romanian word “degete” meaning “fingers”.

Via a tweet from the BBC’s official Eurovision account, we learn that filming for the postcard that will appear before Theodor Andrei’s Eurovision 2023 performance has begun and is taking place in Bucharest.

The BBC has released behind-the-scenes footage of the Romanian postcard for Eurovision 2023. It’s filmed in Bucharest in front of the Ion Luca Caragiale National Theatre, and shows Andrei miming in front of the statue and having fun.

This year the Eurovision production team chose to shoot the postcards in the country of each entry, rather than using the postcards to showcase the country hosting the contest.
The countries that we know that their postcards have been shot so far are:

  • Albania – Albina & Familija Kelmendi
  • Austria – Teya & Salena
  • Croatia – Let 3
  • Cyprus – Andrew Lambrou
  • France – La Zarra
  • Germany – Lord of the Lost
  • Ireland – Wild Youth
  • Latvia – Sudden Lights
  • Lithuania – Monika Linkytė
  • Malta – The Busker
  • Moldova – Pasha Parfeni
  • Netherlands – Mia Nicolai & Dion Cooper
  • Poland – Blanka
  • Slovenia – Joker Out

Don’t forget that Theodor Andrei with “D.G.T. (Off and on)” is competing in the Second Semi-Final on May 11th in order of appearance 03

Romania: MIHAI is ready for Selectia Nationala 2023!

Mihai Traistariu is no stranger to the Eurovision community, since he represented Romania at Eurovision 2006 and came to fourth place for his country, with the well-known song “Tornero“.

The singer never stopped trying to get back on the competition scene, often taking part in the Romanian national final, but never winning. In fact, he has sent songs to other countries as well, such as San Marino, Azerbaijan and Belarus.

It may be that in recent years the singer has critized several times the  public television for their choices in the song contest, however the changes in Selectia Nationala 2023, were the ones that made him want to try his luck again and be on the Eurovision stage, after 17 years.

Through his personal Facebook account, MIHAI announced his intention to take part in Selectia Nationala 2023, since the representative of the country will be chosen exclusively by the Romanian public. In fact, he invites all interested composers to send him their songs in order to be the representative of Romania at Eurovision 2023.

In his post, MIHAI states:

As you already know, apart from being a Eurovision mega fan, I also set a goal.
So I started to fight for the first place in Romania which is extremely difficult … but never impossible! This year there will be NO JUDGES and that is a good thing. It will be public vote only. I’ve been saying this from the beginning… Indigenous musicians, when invited to the Eurovision jury, have a natural tendency to sabotage certain artists or composers, with criteria known only to them. There were such examples every year. There is also the reverse: there are judges who favor certain competitors… either out of friendship, or personal interests, or… “so that the neighbor’s goat doesn’t win”! And at that time….. I say a big YES to this year’s selection, precisely because there is no jury. Back to it again… If you know any songwriters, younger or more experienced, who might be looking to try their luck at Eurovision… with Mihai Traistariu… I’m waiting for their demo tracks on my email: mihai.traistariu@gmail.com

PS : There’s just one thing I want to make clear from the start!
I listen to all the songs I receive and only then can I decide whether or not it is worth taking part in the contest! I’d like to stop throwing myself on the tram if I’m not feeling the song! Come now with this bomb song! Come on, Romania!

The process of Selectia Nationala 2023

Only 12 songs will compete in one night, where the public will exclusively choose the song they wish to represent in Liverpool, at Eurovision 2023.

The deadline for submission of entries for the Selectia Nationala will start on Monday 14th November and will last until 11th December. Then a committee will choose the 12 best songs. The artists who will compete in the Selectia Nationala will be announced no later than December 17th.

The Selectia Nationala will be held on February 11 and the winner will be determined solely by public votes, via sms, and online voting. Both Romanians and foreign citizens can participate, without any restrictions, both in terms of creators and performers.

Romania was represented this year by WRS with the song Llamame, which placed 18th  in the grand final:
