Slovenia: Listen to “Veronika” by Raiven for Eurovision 2024!

In December 12, RTVSLO, the public broadcaster of Slovenia, announced in a special press conference, that Raiven, a mezzo-soprano, pop singer, songwriter and harpist, will be the country’s representative in Malmö!

Raiven was selected internally by RTVSLO, which came to many as a surprise, as the country selected their representative internally and not through a national final, only for the third time in its history.

Raiven’s anticipated song for Eurovision 2024, was revealed through a special show called Misija Malmö.

Her song is titled “Veronika” and is in Slovenian (You can listen to it in the video below):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWcSsi7SliI

About the Song

The song is based on Veronika Deseniška (Veronika of Desenice), the second wife of Frederick II, Count of Celje. Raiven says about her song:

“The song was not written with the idea of going to Eurovision. When creating it, I focused primarily on the dramatic quality, which is key to telling Veronika’s story effectively. I wanted her story to not only be expressed but also resonate with the year 2024. The idea that she needed music, which was just right – cinematic and contemporary – was present throughout the creative process.”

Veronika” will be featured on Raiven’s upcoming album Sirene which is set to be released on February 17th, and was written and composed by Raiven herself and a team which also consisted of Bojan Cvjetićanin, the lead songer of Joker Out the country’s representatives in 2023:

“Bojan is a very good friend of mine. We often talked about doing something together, and our musical collaboration on Veronika came about very spontaneously”

Who is Raiven?

Sara Briški Ciman, better known as Raiven is a singer who regularly appears on the country’s public television. He has presented numerous shows, and has appeared in a variety of concerts and music shows.

Her latest single titled “Ikona has become a big sensation in the country after being featured in RTVSLO’s Popevka 2023, alongside Helena Blagne.

No one can deny her professionalismvocal skillsstage appearance and close relationships with RTVS, a set of things that fits perfectly with Eurovision.

Many Eurofans certainly remember Raiven, from her appearances in the Slovenian national final, EMA, having finished third in 2017 and second in 2016 (by just 100 votes) and 2019.

Below you can watch our reaction video for “Veronika”:

What do you think of the Slovene entry for Eurovision 2024? Will she manage to qualify for the final and get a great result?

Iceland: More than 500 musicians demand withdrawal of Iceland from Eurovision!

A number of musicians showed up outside the radio house to present the petition to broadcaster Stefan Eiríksson. Confetti was shot over the broadcaster during the handing over of the list, as can be seen in a video footage taken by protesters that gave mbl.is permission to publish.

Pálmi Gunnarsson, Páll Óskar, Gréta Salóme, Bríet, Friðrik Dór, Svala Björgvinsdóttir and Daníel Ágúst Haraldsson are among more than 500 on a petition of musicians demanding that Iceland withdraw from Eurovision Song Contest, because Israel is participating in the contest.

Israel participates

Playwright Salvör Gullbrá Þórarinsdóttir told mbl.is:

“Musicians are encouraging RÚV to take a stand by withdrawing from Eurovision if Israel participates.”

Salvör also points out that Reykjavíkurdætur signed the list, as well as members of the band Celebs. The European Broadcasting Union has now announced that Israel will take part in this year’s contest. Salvör adds citing the results of a survey conducted by Prósent before Christmas:

“There’s really no other option for RÚV than to take a stand with Palestine. Because there is a strong will among the people to do so.”

According to the findings of this poll, about 60% of the population strongly or rather agree that Iceland should withdraw from the contest.

There have been calls to ban Israel from Eurovision 2024. In Finland, 1300 artists signed a petition asking for Israel to be removed. The British representative Olly Alexander has also shared in public his opinion against Israel. Also just recently Montaigne signed an open letter to the EBU asking the ban of Israel from the contest and Ben Dolic joined her by doing the same.

Sweden: Zara Larsson interested in being a Eurovision 2024 interval! | What about Melodifestivalen?

Zara Larsson is one of the biggest representatives of Swedish pop worldwide.  She is turning 26 at the end of this year, but she already has a vast career, made her international breakthrough at the age of 18 and she has been involved with acting lately, making her debut at a Netflix film A part of You.

She has declared herself as a big fan of Melodifestivalen and Eurovision and has expressed her wish in the past to take part in Melodifestivalen as an interlude act. Now speaking at Sveriges Radio and Fredrik Hilmered, superstar Zara Larsson just expressed that she eagerly wants to go to Eurovision as one of the interval acts of this year’s contest to be held in Malmö, Sweden:

“I’m eager to do an interlude. Being on Eurovision would be really awesome. It’s by far the biggest program an artist can be a part of.”

But when asked about competing in Melodifestivalen, she sounds quite firm:

“I will never compete in Melodifestivalen. It’s more than just getting the chance to use the awesome stage. It’s the ultimate privilege for me as an artist.”

Has she been asked to do an interlude? She responds:

“I’ve told my management to hound them. We’ll see how it turns out. That would be super exciting.”

Her new album “Venus” gets released on the 9th of February and she sets off for her European tour on the 16th of the same month. No wonder why she’s left a big tour gap between the 16th of March and the 31st of May, if one takes a closer look to her tour dates. She seems to be really keen on participating at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest that is hosted by her home country, Sweden, after Loreen did a double and won last year in Liverpool with the song “Tattoo“.

Germany: Ben Dolic signs an open letter to the EBU against Israel!

It seems like the statement of EBU that confirms that KAN and Israel can normally participate to the contest has sparked reactions among the fans but not only.

A few hours later, the (almost) Eurovision Song Contest 2020 representative of Germany, Ben Dolic, signed an open letter to the EBU and made a post on X (Twitter) about it, which you can see below:

“The continued acts of violence by the state of Israel cannot be supported under any circumstances. As an artist, a past Eurovision participant and as a human being, I will not support the EBU’s decision to allow a state that has committed so many atrocities to tens of thousands of civilians participate in the Eurovision Song Contest.

There is no logical explanation for a music competition with the main message of spreading love to have a connection with a place that has acted against their main message in such horrific ways.”

There have been calls to ban Israel from Eurovision 2024. In Finland, 1300 artists signed a petition asking for Israel to be removed. The British representative Olly Alexander has also shared in public his opinion against Israel. Also just recently Montaigne signed an open letter to the EBU asking the ban of Israel from the contest, just as Ben did.

Germany originally planned to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 with the song “Violent Thing” written by Borislav Milanov, Peter St. James, Dag Lundberg, Jimmy Thorén and Connor Martin and performed by Ben Dolic, but then the contest was cancelled due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
