Finland: Käärijä will not give out the jury votes!

We now have another withdrawal from tonight’s line-up. Following Alessandra Mele, Käärijä announced that he will not give out the Finnish votes.

The announcement was made by Käärijä himself via an Instagram story, in which he mentioned:

I have decided not to participate as the spokesperson for the Finnish jury in tonight’s Eurovision finale. Giving out the points tonight does not feel right.

We are still waiting the decision from EBU’s crisis meeting…

Eurovision 2024: Finland’s Second Rehearsal!

We are on the 5th day of rehearsals and the second rehearsal for the countries of the first semi-final have started. Next up is  Finland and Windows95man and the song “No Rules!” to take the stage for their second rehearsal.

Who is Windows95man?

A sweet and pleasant person, he’s a bit of a shy nerd during the day, but when he dons his outfit – the famous T-shirt and jeans hotpants combo that doesn’t work – he transforms into superhuman!

His DJ sets, consisting of Eurodance and 90s techno hits, have been combined with such intense live performances that audiences are regularly left breathless.

For the participation “No Rules!” combined Windows95man’s style, Henri Piispanen’s incredible vocals and a legendary gin egg, which led the duo to an unexpected but undeniable victory at UMK 2024 in Finland.

The rehearsal

Fans of their winning performance at UMK will be pleased to hear that the Denim Egg Show has arrived in Malmö, along with the ‘just-within-the-rules’ nudity, tiny celebrations and high notes by Henri Piispanen. In fact, this is pretty much a cut and paste of their UMK staging, but with even more processing power and a blurry LED wall that delivers a 90s screensaver.

Eurovision 2024: Which rehearsal had the most views on the second day?

The rehearsals continued dynamically, with yesterday’s day hosting another eight countries at the Malmö Arena! Be sure to also read our article from yesterday regarding the views of the seven countries that completed their rehearsals on Saturday.

However, as we know on TikTok, all the first rehearsals are uploaded. Apart from their performances, we’ll also get a sneak peek backstage before they take the stage for the first time in a video of about one minute.

One of the many features of TikTok is the ability to add songs to each user’s video creation. However, the TikTok algorithm is usually able to detect the song used in the video, assign it to the correct track, and then include it in the total number of videos where that sound has been used. Based on this capability, the most popular songs before rehearsals were from the Netherlands and Italy. Will they receive the same promotion as before?

In less than 24 hours (April 29, 2024, time  CET), since the first clip from the rehearsals was uploaded, we have a indicative sample of which rehearsal was favored by the audience (here it should be noted that the videos were uploaded one after the other with a one and a half hour interval and there was a significant delay in their publication).

The rehearsals that had the most views are:

  1. Azerbaijan: FAHREE feat. Ilkin Dovlatov – Özünlə Apar – 185,5 thousand views
  2. Australia: Electric Fields – One Milkali (One Blood) – 142,3 thousand views
  3. Luxembourg: TALI – Fighter – 140 thousand views
  4. Iceland: Hera Bjork – Scared of Heights –  126,3 thousand views
  5. Portugal: iolanda – Grito – 112,8 thousand views
  6. Moldova: Natalia Barbu – In The Middle – 109 thousand views
  7. Finland: Windows95man – No Rules – 108,2 thousand views
  8. Slovenia: Raiven – Veronika – 107 thousand views

With this small sample, we can infer that:

  • None of the eight countries managed to come close to the countries’views that rehearsed the day before. Therefore, we can assume that the second half of the first semifinal doesn’t have the same impact as the first half.
  • The last four countries are very close to each other so it is very likely that some of them can recover in views in the following days.
  • Azerbaijan had the most views, beacause no one knew any information about the stage and also due to the country’s diaspora.

The top six countries with the most views from the two days are as follows:

  1. Poland: LUNA – The Tower – 1,1 thousand views
  2. Ukraine: alyona alyona & Jerry Heil – Teressa & Maria – 763 thousand views
  3. Serbia: Teya Dora – Ramonda – 749 thousand views
  4. Croatia: Baby Lasagna – Rim Tim Tagi Dim – 624 thousand views
  5. Ireland: Bambie Thug – Doomsday Blue – 278 thousand views
  6. Cyprus: Silia Kapsis – Liar – 243 thousand views

TikTok has played a significant role in the success of Eurovision songs in recent years. For example, Duncan Laurence’s winning entry “Arcade” became a global hit a year after winning the competition when it was used in over a million videos on TikTok. One of the earliest TikTok successes from Eurovision was Getter Jaani’s “Rockefeller Street”, which went viral on the platform in 2018 and has since been used in over two million videos. Let’s not forget that Armenia’s entry in 2022 by Rosa Linn with “Snap” gained over a billion views on the platform. Finally, Norway’s entry last year gained significant worldwide publicity months before the competition week, where it secured fifth place.

The second rehearsal for the first semi-final countries will be held on the 1st of May, when we will know how things will appear on screen for the representatives.

Finland 2024: Windows95man ‘nude underwear’ allowed

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has allowed Windows95man to wear their “nude underwear” during their performance.

For his UMK performance of “No Rules”, Windows95man wore underwear that created an illusion of nudity.  However, it was not clear if he would be allowed to keep his performance as intended for Eurovision 2024.  For instance, during his winning performance in Finland, Windows95man wears a t-shirt with the Microsoft Windows 95 Operating System logo.  The logo is now blurred following Eurovision rules on product brands.

Although there was no problem in Finland, there was concern that Windows95man’s performance would not meet the standards of other European broadcasters with stricter rules about the type of content shown on TV before 9 pm (The Eurovision Song Contest airs at 8 pm in some participating countries).

The outfit of Windows95man has been the subject of debate regarding apparent double standards on what could be considered an “indecent performance” and acceptable nudity.  For instance, female representatives have performed with revealing outfits without being considered problematic.

Finland: EBU’s Stance on Windows95man’s Name!

Following the conclusion of Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2024 and the victory of Windows95man, questions arose about whether changes would be needed in their attire and name for Eurovision 2024, as both elements allude to the logo of “Windows,” Microsoft’s famous operating system.

According to Teemu Keisteri, the creator of Windows95Man, the name does not require changing, despite concerns about advertising the brand. However, the same cannot be said for their costume, which includes a shirt and a hat with the Windows logo. Keisteri emphasized:

“We continue to discuss the logo, but it will be a kind of censored version in the funniest way possible. I don’t see it as a problem at all.”

Their performance at Eurovision in May will not differ significantly from their appearance in the national final. It is worth noting that a prominent feature of their performance is a giant egg made of denim, from which Windowsma emerges, and the characteristic denim that showers sparks.

“We keep the performance almost the same because it has received very positive comments. We felt it was so right. We will make it even more beautiful.”

Keisteri and Piispanen promise that the denim jacket and glittery shorts will also be present on the stage in Malmö. However, it was noted that the structure of the egg is too large to be held by the stage mechanisms. Ultimately, the issue was resolved, and the bulky prop does not need to be removed. The only change needed is to make the safety bar attached to the structure detachable, which supports the singer Bishop above the egg at the start of the performance.

Keisteri and Piispanen emphasize that the performance must have a “sense of danger” to align with the message of the song, “No Rules.”

“The whole team knows that now we learn it, but on the Eurovision stage, Teemu will do something completely different.”

Finland with Windows95man and “No Rules” will compete for a place in the Eurovision final in the first semifinal on Tuesday, May 7th.

Who is Windows95Man

Windows95man is an embodiment of the 1990s, liberating a once timid family man from his daily life. It all started when Teemu Keisteri’s videos on YouTube began circulating worldwide. One of the videos even ended up in an NHL match advertisement.

In 2013, a DJ concert at the Flow Festival brought to life the character known as Windows95man. The artist’s costume consists of a very short shorts made by Keisteri’s friend and a Windows95 T-shirt ordered online. Since then, Windows95man has appeared in the New Year’s celebration in Helsinki in 2022, as an opening act for Käärijä at the Helsinki Ice Hall, and at many smaller events.

It is worth noting that Finland has been drawn to compete in the second half of the first semifinal of Eurovision 2024, on May 7th. You can enjoy Windows95Man’s winning performance in the video below:
