Andorra: They won’t return in Eurovision 2025!

Andorra will not be among the countries that will take part in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 in Switzerland!

The national broadcaster of the Principality of Andorra, RTVA, announced today that it does not intend to return to Eurovision 2025, which will be held in Switzerland.

This small state of the Pyrenees, between Spain and France, has only six participations to its credit from 2004 to 2009, which was the last year it sent a representative to the competition. It is also the only country in the competition’s history not to have competed in the finals, as all six entries failed to qualify from the semi-finals. For the record, in 2007 the country came closer than ever to qualifying, finishing 12th with 80 points.

Latvia: The parliament voted against the withdrawal from Eurovision!

The parliament of the Republic of Latvia voted today against the withdrawal of this Baltic country from the Eurovision Song Contest!

Taking things from the beginning, a month ago an online petition took place through the ManaBalss platform in which citizens asked the withdrawal of the country from the pan-European song contest, (despite the fact that Latvia managed to qualify for the grand final for the first time since in 2016) gathering 11,300 signatures, surpassing the threshold of 10,000 signatures required for a petition to reach the Saeima, the country’s legislature. You can read more about the relevant petition in our previous article below.

In the vote that took place today with 87 members present out of 100 members of the parliament, 32 members voted for the resolution, 24 against and 31 abstained. The resolution was therefore rejected.

Eurovision 2025: Zürich Municipal Council passes motions for the sumbition of hosting bid!

The Municipal Council of Zürich passed two motions in favour of the sumbition of a bid for the hosting of the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest!

On Wednesday 12th of June, the Municipal Council of Zürich passed two motions sumbitted by the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland (Sozialdemokratische Partei der Schweiz– SP) and the Green Liberal Party of Switzerland (Grünliberale Partei der Schweiz – GLP) in favour of hosting the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. In their proposals both parties pointed out the positive financial effect as well as the positive impact on the image and the promotion of the city due to Eurovision.

Marco Denoth, a member of the council representing SP, stated:

“We want to show that the Council is behind the event.”

On the other hand the Swiss People’s Party opposed the two motions as it considers Eurovision as a chauvinistic event.

These two motions are about to be submitted to the City Council of Zürich, which will decide if the two motions are adopted. The city mayor Corine Mauch and the council are said to be in favour of hosting Eurovision 2025. If the two motions are adopted, Zürich will be able to officialy submit an official hosting bid.

Poland: Court orders the announcement of the results of the national final for Eurovision 2023!

A court decision in Poland, following a complaint by the local OGAE, orders the announcement of the detailed results of the national final for Eurovision 2023.

The story of the dispute

While we have not yet practically calmed down from the scandals and the tense atmosphere at Eurovision 2024, a decision of the Warsaw Regional Administrative Court obliges the Polish public television to announce the detailed results of the jury in the national final for Eurovision 2023.

As you may remember back then, a lot had been said and written about this national final, which was considered to be at least a scandal. The favorite to win that national final was Jann with the song Gladiator. Despite the fact that the TV audience supported him with their vote, it was the jury’s score that finally gave the ticket to Blanka and her Solo, eventually finishing in the 19th place in the final.

Immediately after the end of the national final, there were many complaints, both about the conflict of interest of some of the jury members, but also about the fact that TVP never announced the detailed results of the jury.

Edyta Gorniac, who was the president of the committee, had stated that she actually only knew her own score and that the results she announced were the ones she was given on a piece of paper. Polish radio and television had explained that the process was supervised by a notary public.

Despite the persistent pressure from OGAE Poland to TVP for transparency and publication of the detailed results, there was no response towards this direction. Thus, with an official complaint of the local branch of OGAE to the regional administrative court of Poland last January, the compulsory publication of the detailed results of the jury in the national final of Eurovision 2023 was requested.

The Court’s decision

The court last week ruled that this information must be public and the public has a right to access it. It remains unknown when TVP is required to announce the official results. No one from public television appeared before the court.

After the change of government in Poland, TVP has entered a process of change and modernization, trying to follow the pro-Western footsteps of the new government. In this context was the detailed announcement of the results of the jury, in the internal selection that followed this year, highlighting the choice of the country’s participation in the competition.

Eurovision 2025: Bern and Biel/Bienne Considering Joint Bid to Host!

Bern and Biel/Bienne Municipal Councils are considering a joint bid to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. The de facto capital of Switzerland Bern as well as the birthplace of this year’s Eurovision winner Nemo, Biel/Bienne are examining the possibility of hosting the Eurovision song contest at the Bernexpo Groupe Exhibition Center.

In a statement by the Biel Council, they said:

“Hosting the major event in Nemo’s home region is therefore a logical step and would be a great opportunity from the point of view of the cities of Bern and Biel. The ESC offers the venue enormous exposure and would fit in well with the diverse, open and bilingual capital region of Bern and Biel.”

The potential venue for the contest is Bern Festhalle, while Tissot Arena in Biel/Bienne will host other competition -related events.

The same statement also mentioned the following:

“The three partners will now jointly examine the detailed requirements dossier from the SRG in detail. In particular, it must be clarified whether the very high requirements for the venue can be met as part of an application. This involves issues such as security, logistics and the high costs that the venue will incur. The new festival hall meets the requirements of a modern event infrastructure and will be ready in time for the ESC to take place.

A final decision as to whether an application will be submitted has not yet been made. This will be made within the application period until the end of June. The municipal councils of Bern and Biel as well as those responsible for the Bernexpo Groupe are convinced that the ESC would be a great celebration and a unique opportunity. They therefore hope that a joint application will be possible. At the same time, it is important to all those involved to only submit an application dossier if there is a real chance of being awarded the contract.”

Turkey: Withdrawing from Eurovision was the right choice says Erdogan!

It is known that Turkey has abstained from the Eurovision Song Contest for the last 12 years with their last participation dating back in 2012 when the contest took place in Baku, Azerbaijan, a country that Turkey considers as a brother nation.

From 2013 onwards, the country decided to stay away from the competition, initially expressing its opposition to the regulations of the contest, including the status of the Big 5 countries and the introduction of the juries that determine 50% of the final result. Then came the addition of Turkey’s discomfort with the visibility of LGBTQI people with the then director general of the country’s public broadcaster, TRT, making a direct reference to drag personality Conchita Wurst who won the competition in 2014 on behalf of Austria.

Today the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan himself, in his political statements made a direct reference to Turkey’s abstention from the song contest. Specifically, he stated that:

‘It’s been 12 years since we didn’t participate at this disgraceful contest. It was a right decision by us. It’s impossible to find normal person at Eurovision and it promotes weird people because it’s a deliberate attempt to remove gender term.’

The Netherlands: Joost Klein seems to have admitted his unlawful act!

A new update has emerged regarding the disqualification of the Netherlands’ Joost Klein hours before the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, despite having qualified from Thursday’s second semi-final.

According to the widely circulated Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, Dutch representative Joost Klein appears to have confessed to this violent behavior by using his fist against a photographer from this year’s competition production, justifying his act by saying that the entire approach by the photographers was something stressful to him.

A prosecution is expected, with a preliminary trial date reportedly set for June.

The head of the investigation hotline section in Malmö stated that:

“It doesn’t really matter if the person is still in the country, we can pursue that case anyway.”

Eurovision 2025: The first official meeting for its hosting!

Switzerland’s national broadcaster SSR SRG kicks off proceedings for the 69th Eurovision Song Contest today in Bern.

A working group has already been formed and is due to hold its first meeting on the details of the competition.

Three cities eager to host Eurovision 2025

So far three cities in Switzerland have expressed their intention to host Eurovision 2025. As we informed you yesterday with our article (here), the first city that has expressed interest is Geneva. Basel and Saint Gallen followed later who also wish to host the European competition.

Conradin Cramer, president of the canton of Basel-Stadt, said that “Basel is ready” and that “it would be wonderful and an honor if Basel could host the next edition of this world-famous song contest for Switzerland.” Their strategy will be based on three main arguments – infrastructure, accessibility and hosting. Cramer made no direct reference to any specific arena or hall that could host the contest.

Christine Bolt, head of the Olma agricultural exhibition in eastern Switzerland, supports holding the Eurovision Song Contest in Saint Gallen. “Now we are in demand,” he told Swiss broadcaster SRF, adding that the new Olma Hall would be perfect for such events. The new Olma Hall was inaugurated at the beginning of March and offers space for up to 12,000 people.

The decision on the city that will host Eurovision 2025 is expected in September.

Israel: Stylist kicked out of Eurovision venue for filming contestant!

Shortly before the final dress rehearsal for the Eurovision Song Contest grand final on Saturday, representatives from Greece, Ireland and Switzerland clashed with Israeli contestant Eden Golan‘s stylist Itay Bezaleli in an unusual incident.

He has since returned to the event, but the Israeli broadcasting corporation reported that at the organizers’ request, “the Israeli delegation was moved to a different room within the delegation area. Eden Golan and her team are solely focused on tonight’s performance, striving to ensure it is professional and represents Israel in the most honorable and appropriate manner.”

Israeli representatives explained that the move was designed to distance the Israeli team from the nearby Irish delegation. In an unusual occurrence for the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the final dress rehearsal started 17 minutes late. Representatives from Ireland, Greece and SwitzerlandBambie Thug, Marina Satti, and Nemo, who were mentioned by Bezaleli in his story—were absent from the delegation presentation at the start of the rehearsal. The EBU clarified that the representatives were not obligated to participate in the delegation presentation.

Irish contestant Bambie Thug did not appear at the rehearsal and shared on social media that there was “a situation while we were waiting to go to the stage for the flag parade rehearsal which I felt needed urgent attention from the EBU – the EBU have taken this matter seriously and we have been in a discussion about what action needs to be taken. This means I have missed my dress rehearsal – I am really sorry to the fans that have come to see me. I hope to see you on the stage tonight.”
