The Netherlands:Commentator Cornald Maas is hesitant towards a national final possibility

The experienced Dutch commentator of Eurovision, Cornald Maas, voiced on Twitter his negative attitude towards the possibility of hosting a national final for the selection of the future representatives of the Netherlands.

In response to Dutch sociologist Sjors Joosten’s article, published in NRC Handelsblad, arguing that the Netherlands should follow Sweden’s example and organize a Melodifestivalen-style national final, Cornald Maas stated:

Hear hear? I would say: think think. Leaving out the upcoming competition: All (Dutch) national finals since 2004 have resulted in only a single qualification to the final. From 2013 onwards (internal selection), we are always in the final. Or maybe you just want an orange national celebration?

In a subsequent tweet, after having being asked why the selection method is not democratic anymore,he commented the following:

It doesn’t work at the moment if we want to guarantee quality. The music industry is not willing to participate in a national final in the Netherlands, unlike in Sweden. Even “in the background”, big/good names with good songs do not want to compete here, as it has been proven more than once.

In spite of the fact that holding a Dutch national final does not seem likely in the near future, Cornald Maas did not rule out seeking for alternative, more democratic selection processes such as plebiscites.

The Netherlands is a country that has established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the competition, with a considerable amount of remarkable entries that gave them various top-10 placements, including a 9th, a 2nd and even a top position in the scoreboard ever since the reintroduction of the internal selection process.

The Greek cooperating broadcaster ERT may find themselves at the crossroads between the internal selection and the national final on account of the fact that ever since the implementation of a selection process similar to the Dutch one (submission of proposals by interested artists and selection by an artistic committee), they have returned to the final (2019) and to the top 10 subsequently (2021,2022).

Do you think a Melodifestivalen type national final could be successfully held in Greece? Would it capture the interest of well-known/respectable artists and record companies? Would the Greek public make the right choice?

Italy: The three minute version of “Due Vite”!

In the Eurovision Song Contest there is the rule according to which all the songs when performed live on the semi-final and final nights must be maximum of three minutes in length. So while the tracks may last longer on music platforms and on the official  album, they will need to undergo some processing for their live performance.

One of the countries that usually chooses longer tracks is Italy, where again this year its participation with Marco Mengoni and “Due vite” had to be modified.

Below you can see the lyrical differences between the regular length and the three-minute length of the song on the night of the Grand Final.

Turkey: Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu supports country’s return to the Eurovision Song Contest!

In Turkey. some days ago, the six parties which constitute the main country’s political opposition announced that their leader is going to be Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, who is already the leader of the Republican People’s Party (CHP). That specific party was founded by Kemal Ataturk himself approximately 100 years ago.

According to the recent exit polls which took place in Turkey, Kılıçdaroğlu seems to be the odds-on favourite to win the elections, since his political beliefs are more acceptable by the majority of the Turkish people and more friendly towards the West World, in contrast to Erdoğan’s. Driven by those data, there are a lots of people who actually believe that Kılıçdaroğlu’s policy could mark the possible return of Turkey in the contest.

Turkey’s Republican People’s Party can be characterized by its oppostition towards the old, traditional islamic beliefs that are supported by Erdoğan’s current policy and system of governance. Kılıçdaroğlu himself has mentioned multiple times during these last months that if he actually wins in Turkey’s elections on May 14th, he will be a trustworthy member between Turkey and West’s discussions for a much better cooperative future and that his primary goal will be the restoration between Turkey and West World’s policies.

It is a shame for Turkey to withdraw from Eurovision

Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu commented also on Turkey’s decision to withdraw from the Eurovision Song Contest, under Erdoğan’s rule in 2013, describing it as a shameful decision.

It is a shame for Turkey to withdraw from Eurovision. Our artists will go there, sing their songs and folk songs. Countries will vote, someone will win. This is a competition. Artists become even more popular by taking part in international competitions and by winning awards. That’s the proper form of a foreign policy.

To make a long story short, Turkey’s elections in spring seem to be of high importance regarding not only the serious political decisions for the people but also the country’s possible return in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Let’s keep in mind that Turkey last took part in 2012 in Baku, Azerbaijan, represented by Can Bonomo singing “Love Me Back” which came seventh at the end of the Grand Final. Take a look:
