Eurovision 2023: First Rehearsal of Sweden!

Today is the first day of rehearsals, the day when the countries participating in the First Semi Final will take over the stage for their first rehearsal at M&S Bank Arena, in Liverpool!

Next up on stage for their first rehearsal is Sweden and Loreen with the song “Tattoo“.

Who is Loreen?

Lorine Zineb Nora Talhaoui, known as Loreen, is a Swedish singer, songwriter, and this year’s winner of Melodifestivalen. Interested in becoming a musician, Loreen took part in the Idol 2004 television competition, finishing fourth. The following year she released her first single, “The Snake“, with the band Rob’n’Raz and became a television presenter on TV400. While working as a segment producer and director for several Swedish reality TV shows, she entered Melodifestivalen 2011 with the song “My Heart Is Refusing Me“, which became a top 10 hit in Sweden. She also had top 20 hits in Sweden with the singles “Crying Out Your Name” (2012) and her Melodifestivalen 2017 entry “Statements“.

Representing Sweden, she won the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 with her entry “Euphoria“, which topped the charts in numerous European countries. She will represent Sweden in Eurovision for a second time in 2023 with Tattoo which broke into the charts globally in many countries.

The Rehearsal

So the light box is back, but it’s a smaller version than the one we saw at Melodifestivalen. It’s also raised off the ground, so the bottom section can be wheeled onto the stage. The stage and the LED screen is a sea of swirling smoke, and the whole effect is incredibly intense.

Sarah Louise Bennett / EBU

It’s Loreen, so obviously this performance is tighter than that catsuit and more polished than those terrifyingly long nails. Sounds incredible, looks incredible – the perfect finish to a brilliant first day of rehearsals.

Eurovision 2023: First Rehearsal of Moldova!

Today is the first day of rehearsals, the day when the countries participating in the First Semi Final will take over the stage for their first rehearsal at M&S Bank Arena, in Liverpool!

Next up on stage for their first rehearsal is Moldova and Pasha Parfeny with the song “Soarele Şi Luna“.

Who is Pasha Parfeny?

Eurovision runs through Pasha Parfeni’s veins, having been involved with multiple national final songs in Moldova, as well as representing the nation at the Eurovision Song Contest back in 2012, where he finished 11th.

The following year, he joined forces with his wife Yuliana to compose Moldova’s entry O Mie for Aliona Moon. Aliona had been a backing vocalist for Pasha in 2012, and this time he took to the Eurovision stage to accompany her on the piano.

The Rehearsal

There’s so much to love about this performance from Moldova  – the huge drums, Sergiu the epic flute guy, Pasha’s atmospheric vocals, the two backing singers with huge horned headdresses.

Sarah Louise Bennett / EBU

It’s the kind of ethno-banger we used to see a lot more often at Eurovision, and all together it creates a performance that’s pulsing through the arena floor. This is going to go BIG in the Liverpool arena next Tuesday.

Below you can watch a small clip from the Moldovan first rehearsal, once it’s published on TikTok:

Eurovision 2023: First Rehearsal of Switzerland!

Today is the first day of rehearsals, the day when the countries participating in the First Semi Final will take over the stage for their first rehearsal at M&S Bank Arena, in Liverpool!

Next up on stage for their first rehearsal is Switzerland and Remo Forrer with the song “Watergun“.

Who is Remo Forrer?

Remo, after a childhood of playing traditional folk music on the accordion in his little Swiss village of Hemberg, Remo moved onto the piano.

Given time he might have found fame with his accordion skills but it was his singing that landed him victory at The Voice of Switzerland 2020. He also triumphed in the German version of the music game show I Can See Your Voice.

The Rehearsal

Well, this is quite special. “Watergun is a heartfelt ballad about the tragedy of war, and a universal call for peace. It’s clear that Remo feels a real connection to these lyrics, and his vocal is beautiful.

Corinne Cumming / EBU

Below you can watch a small clip from the Swiss first rehearsal, once it’s published on TikTok:

@eurovision A heartfelt and haunting call for peace✌️🇨🇭 #Eurovision2023 #Eurovision @remoforrer ♬ original sound – Eurovision

Staging-wise, he has four contemporary dancers (one is Ellinea Siampalis, dancer at several numbers in Melodifestivalen, who has Greek roots) and also dances himself, which we weren’t expecting.

Corinne Cumming / EBU

The staging for this was created by Sacha Jean-Baptiste, who was also responsible for Switzerland‘s G’jon’s Tears in 2021 and Marius Bear in 2022.

Corinne Cumming / EBU

Who says you can’t have pyro in a ballad? Remo Forrer is breaking all the rules, with a short interlude of smoke and red fireworks raining down from the roof. All VERY dramatic.

Corinne Cumming / EBU

The second Swiss rehearsal will be held on the 3rd of May, when we will know how the performance will look on screen for the Swiss entry.

Spain: Eaea’s stage appearance will be magical and dynamic!

Strength, magic and power are the words that characterize what the Spanish team is preparing and what we will see on stage in Liverpool.

Speaking to Eurovision Space, Dalia Negra, the studio that has taken over the artistic direction of Eaea, mentioned what we will see from Blanca Paloma on the Eurovision stage. The said team has taken over the visuals and design that will be used in Spain’s appearance in the Grand Final on 13 May.

Eaea’s stage appearance will be different from what we saw at Benidorm Fest and these changes will mostly relate to the 2nd half of the show.

In general, the structure of Benidorm is maintained, at least in the first part. Towards the middle and the end is when there will be more details and changes…with respect to Benidorm.

In general, the team explained that in the appearance of Blanca Paloma on the Eurovision stage, they want to keep the basic elements that were also present at Benidorm Fest and upgrade them with all the possibilities that the stage in Liverpool can give.

The words that characterize Blanca Paloma’s appearance are:

Strength, magic, power, root, feeling, show and truth.

We remind you that Spain, as a member of the BIG-5, competes directly in the final on May 13 and claims the first prize after 54 years and after the 3rd place that Chanel achieved last year and rekindled the Spanish interest in the competition.

Ireland: Wild Youth cut ties with their creative director over ‘transphobic’ tweets!

With just two weeks to go until Eurovision Ireland’s act Wild Youth have decided to stop working with their creative director.

The termination of the relationship between Wild Youth and Ian Banham came after screen grabs, said to have been taken from his account, began circulating on Twitter with what could be considered offensive messaging. The tweets allegedly referred to transgender women as men.

In a statement posted on Twitter the band wrote: ‘Wild Youth is a band that stands for unity and kindness. Our song represents our beliefs as a band. We have cut all ties with Ian Banham and will not have him on or near our team or Eurovision journey. We are so sorry for anyone offended by his comments.

Ian Banham

This comes after Eurovision Discord, who usually remain anonymous and share news from the music competition, publicly condemned the appointment.

According to Ian’s website he has worked with Lily Allen, Kylie Minogue, Katya Jones, Cheryl and Westlife. He also works as a choreographer and creative on Dancing With The Stars in Ireland.

Ireland will perform at the first semi-final on May 9.

Eurovision 2023: Liverpool mayor presentes Eurovision trains and buses!

Liverpool Mayor Steve Rotheram has unveiled the trains and buses that will be hitting the Liverpool City Region’s roads and rails during the two weeks of Eurovision Song Contest.

The contest coming to Liverpool has been made possible with the help of £2m of funding from Mayor Rotheram and the Combined Authority. As the eyes of the world turn their attention to the city region, the mayor has commissioned a new look for the region’s public transport to mark the occasion.

One of the region’s new publicly owned £500m trains has also been wrapped in Eurovision livery and will appear on the Merseyrail network from today.

New zero-emission hydrogen buses will also start appearing from today (Monday 24 April) draped in Eurovision’s colours. They will initially be used for driver training before entering passenger service in the coming days on the 10A route between St Helens and Liverpool.

Eurovision artwork will also appear at train and bus stations, bus stops, ferry terminals and tunnel entrances with the region set to welcome an estimated 100,000 extra visitors, while the contest itself is expected to attract around 160 million TV viewers.

Rotheram said: “The chance to host a global spectacle like the Eurovision Song Contest is an opportunity that doesn’t come around very often – especially for a city in the UK – that’s why so many cities bid for the accolade.

“I’m enormously proud of the investments we’ve made to deliver a publicly-owned, public transport network run in the interests of the public. We’ve commissioned these new liveries to celebrate this global spectacular coming to our region – it really is once in a lifetime.”

Eurovision is predicted to be directly worth around £25m to the city region economy when it takes over Liverpool next May and, looking at the impact on previous host cities, it could also increase tourism to the city by up to five per cent a year – which equates to over £250m extra revenue by 2026.

Netherlands: Duncan Laurence was recruited to rescue “Burning Daylight”!

The situation with this year’s Dutch participation in the contest appears to be more serious than expected. After the official statment that the country’s public broadcaster (Avrotros) was forced to take, due to the wave of negative comments received after Mia & Dion‘s live appearances at the Eurovision pre parties, now the last winner of the Netherlands and composer of the song with which the two young artists will compete in Liverpool – Duncan Laurence, announces that was recruited to help them in the battle they have to fight in the first difficult semi-final.

Duncan Laurence, with a post on his social networks, informs his fans that he will postpone the planned release of his new song, as well as other obligations he had, since in the next period he will focus exclusively on Mia & Dion and how they will perform better their song, Burning Daylight, in Liverpool.

This statement comes after Eric van Stade, a representative of Avrotros, who on RTL Boulevard, described precisely the problem facing this year’s representatives of the country in the contest:

We know what’s wrong, the whole of Holland has seen it. The creative team working on it is now continuing, right at those points, to get the vocals right… There were two new artists, two new talents. Only this year we see that the step (they have to take) to the big stage is much bigger than in previous years when we worked with young talents.

We remind you that this year’s Dutch participation was internally selected by the country’s public television. However, the Netherlands seems to be considering changing the selection system next year and returning to the national final method.

Below, see Eurovisionfun’s video reaction to the Dutch entry:

Will the Netherlands manage to qualify for the final? Tell us in the comments below!
