After a tense voting process, Georgia emerged victorious with Andria Putkaradze and “To My Mom“, clinching the title for this year’s competition. Junior Eurovision 2024

Following Spain’s second-place finish in Nice and France’s decision not to host for a second consecutive year, the event was held in Madrid, marking the first time Spain hosted the contest. The iconic Caja Mágica served as the venue, welcoming delegations from seventeen participating countries. Hosting duties were masterfully carried out by Ruth Lorenzo, Marc Clotet, and Melani Garcia.

This year’s competition saw an increase in participants. San Marino and Cyprus returned after absences of nine and seven years, respectively. However, the United Kingdom, despite a successful comeback in 2022, opted not to participate this year.

Junior Eurovision 2024: Opening Ceremony to be held behind closed doors!

Spain is preparing to welcome the delegations from the seventeen countries competing in the 22nd Junior Eurovision Song Contest. Although this will be the first time Spain hosts the event, and the first time since 1969 that a Eurovision event is held in the Iberian country, recent developments have forced alterations to the contest’s original planning.

The Opening Ceremony

The Junior Eurovision Song Contest traditionally kicks off with the Opening Ceremony, where all participating artists, national delegations, and accredited press are welcomed. However, due to the recent devastation caused by Storm DANA in Spain, the celebratory atmosphere of the event will be toned down.

According to ESCPlus, instead of the usual grand ceremony, this year’s event will feature a simple reception for the artists, which will not be open to the accredited press or the public. For the first time in recent years, the Opening Ceremony will not be broadcast online via the official Junior Eurovision website, JuniorEurovision.tv.

Nevertheless, the importance of the ceremony itself has been reduced this year, as the running order draw for the contest took place earlier, rather than during the Opening Ceremony.

Despite these changes, Spain remains committed to ensuring the safe and successful execution of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. While the celebrations may be more subdued, the event will continue as planned, and the country looks forward to hosting this important competition, albeit under altered circumstances.

Junior Eurovision 2024: Luxembourg to broadcast the contest live for the first time!

In a delightful development, Luxembourg’s national broadcaster, RTL, will make history by airing the 22nd Junior Eurovision Song Contest live on November 16. This marks the first time RTL will broadcast the event, even though the country has not yet participated in the competition.

RTL Zwee has officially scheduled the Junior Eurovision 2024 in its broadcasting for November 16, complete with commentary in Luxembourgish by Raoul Roos and Eric Lehmann. This broadcast signals a significant return for Luxembourg to Eurovision events, especially following its re-entry into the adult contest after a three-decade absence. Could this be a precursor to Luxembourg’s potential debut in the Junior Eurovision in the near future? Only time will tell…

More countries will broadcast the contest

In addition to Luxembourg, other non-participating countries will also air the contest. Lithuania and Montenegro are set to join Luxembourg in broadcasting the event, along with Croatia, a founding member of the contest and its first ever winner in 2003. These countries may be looking to reintroduce their audiences to the children’s contest, gauging interest for a possible return the next years.

It’s worth noting that countries like Cyprus and San Marino have also returned to the competition after several years away, indicating a growing interest in the Junior Eurovision format across Europe.

France: No immediate decision on hosting Junior Eurovision 2024!

France Télévisions has not made an immediate decision after its victory in Nice on whether to host Junior Eurovision 2024.

Stéphane Sitbon-Gomez, Director of Channels and Progams at France Télévisions, told 20Minutes.fr that no decision has yet been made on whether France will host the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2024.

Zoé Clauzure won the competition for France yesterday, bringing the country its second consecutive win.

Mr Sitbon-Gomez said:

As far as Junior Eurovision is concerned, we will first celebrate the victory. Then we will discuss, as we have done every time, with the EBU to find out where it would be better. There are many countries that want to host it and we don’t want there to be a French monopoly on Junior Eurovision.

Furthermore, he stressed that the broadcaster has not yet taken any decision on the organisation of the competition:

We take time to discuss and think together. Today, we are especially happy and proud of what we have been able to experience.

The lack of immediate reaction to the victory is a change from France’s 2021 victory in Yerevan, Armenia. Then on the night of the competition, the general manager of France Télévisions confirmed that it would host the next edition of the competition.

There is speculation that with the 2024 Paris Olympics taking place in 2024 and the financial burden this will place on the host country’s broadcaster, France Télévisions may choose to decline to host the event. We recall that this has happened before in 2015, when RAI of Italy chose not to host the 2015 competition and instead the EBU opened up hosting the contest to bidding.

Zoé Clauzure from France won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Nice, France with 228 points. She was first in both the jury vote and the online vote, bringing France its third win and a consecutive victory after 2022.
