Portugal: 667 songs were submitted for Festival da Canção 2023!

Some time ago RTP, Portugal’s public broadcaster, revealed through the official Instagram account of Festival da Canção, that 667 songs have been submitted to take part in the national  final.

The song submission window opened in September 2 and closed on October 21, while the four songs and artists that will claim the ticket for Liverpool and Portugal’s representation in Eurovision 2023 will be revealed in the coming days.

Like last year, Festival da Canção will host 20 acts, 16 songs of those being written from songwriters of different genres invited by RTP. The remaining 4 will be selected by the open submission process.

The national final will feature two semi-finals, with five songs from each, qualifying for the final. The Grand Final will take place with 10 songs, and the winner will be decided by a combination of 50% public vote and 50% jury vote.

The previous winner of Festival da Canção and Portugal’s representative in Eurovision 2022 was Maro with the song “saudade, saudade“ that ended up in 9th place of the Grand Final, keeping Portugal’s qualification streak for the second year in a row:

Eurovision 2022: Portugal’s Second Rehearsal!

Last country to get on stage before the final and smaller break for today is Portugal. Maro, who wrote her first song at the song of 11, with her team performed in a circle formation on the B stage right in front of the Green Room during their first rehearsal. The staging had also a graphic backdrop that added some swirly colour. The performance of the first rehearsal could be described as simple, beautiful and relaxing. Portugal is just outside of the top 10 in the odds, but with their second rehearsal, they will try to sneak in the odds’ favourites.

The Second Rehearsal

Portugal’s rehearsal starts with dark lighting and atmospheric vibe. Maro and the backup singers are arranged circlularly on stage B. The performance starts with close shots on Maro. There are not much differences from the national selection’s performance. All the artists are standing up and clapping at various parts during the act. The main colours of the staging are blue and purple, while there is a little green in the backround at the end. They manage to create an emotional and magical atmosphere and the camera angles are on point.
