Eurovision 2023: The United Kingdom will officially host the contest!

The EBU, along with British public broadcaster BBC, have just officially confirmed what we already suspected: The runner-up of Eurovision 2022, the United Kingdom, is the country which has been chosen to host next year’s contest, due to the involvement of winning country Ukraine in an ongoing war.

Nevertheless, the show will contain both British and Ukrainian elements, in order to reflect Ukraine’s win with Kalush Orchestra. More specifically, the Eurovision site informs us of the following:

  • The BBC will take on hosting duties with the contest to be held in the United Kingdom in 2023
  • The bidding contest for the host city will begin this week
  • Ukraine will automatically qualify for the Grand Final along with the Big 5 (which includes the United Kingdom)
  • Representatives of Ukrainian broadcaster UA: PBC will work with the BBC to develop Ukrainian elements of the shows
  • The logo, which is to be revealed later, will reflect unique circumstances of staging.

Below are the statements from the Heads of all parties involved:

Martin Österdahl, Eurovision Song Contest’s Executive Supervisor:

‘‘We’re exceptionally grateful that the BBC has accepted to stage the Eurovision Song Contest in the UK in 2023, The BBC has taken on hosting duties for other winning countries on four previous occasions. Continuing in this tradition of solidarity, we know that next year’s Contest will showcase the creativity and skill of one of Europe’s most experienced public broadcasters whilst ensuring this year’s winners, Ukraine, are celebrated and represented throughout the event.”

Mykola Chernotytskyi, Head of the Managing Board of UA: PBC:

“The 2023 Eurovision Song Contest will not be in Ukraine but in support of Ukraine. We are grateful to our BBC partners for showing solidarity with us. I am confident that together we will be able to add Ukrainian spirit to this event and once again unite the whole of Europe around our common values of peace, support, celebrating diversity and talent.”

Tim Davie, BBC Director-General:

“It is a matter of great regret that our colleagues and friends in Ukraine are not able to host the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest. Being asked to host the largest and most complex music competition in the world is a great privilege. The BBC is committed to making the event a true reflection of Ukrainian culture alongside showcasing the diversity of British music and creativity. The BBC will now begin the process to find a host city to partner with us on delivering one of the most exciting events to come to the UK in 2023.”

Details regarding the host city and the logo will, therefore, be released on a later date.

Office of the President of Ukraine: “Ukraine is already preparing for Eurovision 2023”!

Cyril Tymoshenko, Deputy Head of the Presidential Office of Ukraine, in a post on Telegram that was also reposted on the official Facebook page of Suspilne for Eurovision, states that the preparations for Eurovision 2023 have already begun!

The main question for us and the EBU is security. To ensure the necessary logistics, and especially security, we look at different locations. Exactly which we can not announce yet.

The Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine from the very beginning are involved in the preparations for Eurovision-2023. Ukraine is already preparing for the Eurovision 2023 final.

At the same time in Geneva the reference group of the contest is meeting with an unknown agenda, although as you understand the issue of the country that will host Eurovision 2023 is both burning and important.

Ukrainian officials in all their statements appear confident that their country will host Eurovision 2023, despite the armed conflict that continues to rage mainly in the east of the country. In fact, a few days ago they set up an organizing committee for this purpose.

Ukraine won the right to host the Eurovision Song Contest for the third time in its territory, after the victory of the Kalush Orchestra in Turin, with the song Stefania. We are waiting with interest for the decision of the EBU, whether the competition will finally be hosted next year in Ukraine or for security reasons, another country will be preferred.

Eurovision 2023: Kyiv states it’s ready to host the contest!

The complex issue of the hosting of Eurovision 2023 seems to be developing, with the Office of the Mayor of Kyiv stating that the Ukrainian capital is ready to host Eurovision 2023, if asked.

In particular, the Deputy Head of the State Administration of the city of Kyiv, Mykola Povoroznyk, stated the following:

We are ready to host Eurovision. We have all the infrastructure prepared for it. I do not think it is appropriate to build something new, we will focus on what we already have – within a year, in the current circumstances, it is quite difficult to build something new. If the organizers trust us, we will hold a competition of high international level.

Kyiv is the first Ukrainian city to express interest in hosting the competition after the country’s victory with Kalush Orchestra, as well as the one that hosted the competition in 2005 and 2017, thanks to the country’s first two victories.

Poland: Public broadcaster declares willingness to host Eurovision 2023!

After Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, Iceland and Sweden, Poland also declares its willingness to host or at least help Ukraine host Eurovision 2023!

The President of Poland’s Public Television, Jacek Kurski, explained that he is willing to help Ukraine in the organization of Eurovision 2023, although that’s something he cannot entirely commit to before first consulting other state services.

There is always willingness to help, but there are also procedures that bind us as a company like the State Accountancy. As a public company, we are disciplined here, and therefore I cannot make promises other than that of generally good will in this matter.

Poland has already confirmed its presence in next year’s competition, while Mr. Kurski also expressed his support for Junior Eurovision, where Poland counts two recent victories.
