Greece: ERT started the submission of entries for Eurovision 2023 | The official announcement!

Fully confirming Eurovisionfun’s report once again, that during August the machines of ERT were heating up and in the headquarters of the Greek state radio and television they were feverishly preparing for Eurovision 2023, a little while ago the announcement for the selection of the Greek participation was made.

For another year, as we had already informed you, the representative of Greece, as well as the song that will represent the Mediterranean country in May in the contest, will be selected through an internal process, through the submission of proposals.

Deadline and conditions for submitting entries

Until October 9th, those interested in representing Greece at the 67th Eurovision Song Contest should submit their entries to ERT.

A change compared to last year’s process is what we from Eurovisionfun had mentioned, that is, the songs that are submitted should not have been submitted in any other country, while they are still in the process. ERT’s announcement specifically stated:

In the context of ERT’s participation in the 67th Eurovision Song Contest, which will take place in May 2023 in the United Kingdom, the Hellenic Radio Television invites companies active in the production or distribution of recordings to submit proposals for our country’s participation, with a final deadline of Sunday, October 9, 2022.

Each proposal must be complete: i.e. include a performer or group with a maximum of six members, according to the regulations, and also one to three songs, which have not been released or performed to date either in Greece or abroad as in any way, in whole or in part. In the choice of participation, any artistic group supporting the performer and ideas (concept) for the promotion and presentation of the song will also be taken into account.

The proposals submitted in the context of the above call are addressed exclusively to ERT.

Until the completion of their evaluation, they may not have submitted simultaneously to a corresponding procedure of another participating broadcaster in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Submission of proposals to eurovision@ert.gr.

Possible candidates

Without of course they are the only ones who will send their proposals, already through Eurovisionfun you have been informed about several artists who have their proposals ready (or almost ready).

These are Vassilis Kourtis, Melissa Mantzoukis, Evangelia, Leon of Athens, Joanne and others, who in the coming days will submit their candidate songs to ERT.

Over time we will have the opportunity to reveal to you more details about their proposals, as well as the proposals of other artists who will also be submitted to ERT.

ERT’s hopes for another Top-10 placement

Much earlier than ERT has ever started its search, this year it starts the procedures for choosing Greece’s participation in Eurovision. Guided by its professionalism, but also a very hard-working team, with more experience and efficiency, ERT will travel to the United Kingdom to repeat what it knows well and to achieve why not something better than this year’s eighth place.

Having been fully confirmed for the last two years, we dare to take risks early again this year. In 2023, Greece will remain high!

Stay tuned to Eurovisionfun if you want to be fully informed about everything that is happening around the Greek participation in the 67th Eurovision Song Contest! The home of Eurovision in Greece is here!

The rules of Eurovision 2023 are released: Pre-recorded backing vocals permitted again

EBU has released through the official Eurovision website the rules of the 2023 contest.

They are established by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and are approved by the contest’s governing body, the Reference Group.

While the majority of the rules remain the same over the years, in 2021 EBU decided to allow the use of pre-recorded backing vocals in order to be able to bring less people in the contest given the Covid restrictions at the time, as well as allow compositions to be presented “as close as possible to their original composition”.

This change of rules remained for the 2022 contest and it will remain again for the 2023, according to the published set of rules. Excerpt 2.2.3 mentions:

“The lead singer(s) of the selected song (the “Lead Vocal(s)”) shall perform live on stage only.

  • Eventual vocal support(s) for the Lead Vocal(s) (the “Lead Dub(s)”) shall perform live, on stage or off stage, only.
  • All other backing vocal(s) performing vocal harmonies (the “Backing Vocals”) may perform either live on stage or off stage and/or on a Backing track compliant to the requirements under par (iii) hereafter.

No on-stage Contestant (whether Lead Vocals, Lead Dubs or Backing Vocals or dancers) shall be allowed to lip-sync (playback) in such a way as to make it appear that they are singing all or most of the song when they actually are not.”

Ukraine: Kalush Orchestra launch fundraiser for Azov fighters

The Ukrainian winners of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest on Wednesday launched a 24-hour fundraiser on behalf of soldiers who defended a besieged steel plant, as the country marked 31 years of independence and six months of war.

In a video posted on Instagram, Kalush Orchestra called on Ukrainians to donate 24 hryvnia (65 cents) each over 24 hours for those who fought on the frontlines at the Azovstal plant in Mariupol.

“We are opening donations for wounded fighters from Azovstal,” the band said.

“This money will help our heroes become healthy and strong again,” the group added in a caption translated into English, also congratulatingUkrainians on the country’s Independence Day.

Mariupol was under siege for months. Fighters from the Azov Regiment, a unit of the national guard, fought for weeks from bunkers and tunnels below the steelworks before many surrendered in May.

Kalush Orchestra won Eurovision with “Stefania” the same month, later raising $900,000 for the Ukrainian military by selling their trophy.

Switzerland: Submission period opens for Eurovision 2023!

Switzerland has already announced that it will select its entry for Eurovision 2023 through an internal selection. Today, the German-speaking public broadcaster SRF, published the rules of the process, while it also opened the submission period for entries.

The process will be the same as since 2019, which have proven to be successful for the country scoring two top-5 results.

As in previous years there will be several stages in the selection. At all stages, entries will be evaluated by two jury panels. The first jury will be consisted of 100 Swiss viewers. The second jury will be consisted of 20 international music professionals, who have already been members of their countries’ Eurovision jury panels. Each jury will account for 50% of the total score.

Eurovision 2023: Glasgow is bookies’ heavy favourite to host the Contest!

Following the BBC’s announcement of the shortlist of cities on 12th August, one aspirant organising city has become bookies’ absolute favourite to host ESC. Glasgow, albeit being ahead of competition from the very beginning, has now managed to crystallise its position, according to the betting odds, securing an overwhelming 52% chance of holding the event!

Interestingly, Glasgow has more than doubled its chances to host ESC since August the 11th, a day before the official announcement of the shortlisted cities. Birmingham and Manchester are the bookies’ second and third favourite, with 17% and 11% chance of hosting ESC respectively, having no considerable fluctuations in the betting odds over the last three weeks.

However, the Host City bid race is far from over. The seven shortlisted cities have now entered the first stage of the two stage bidding process. In the second stage, the cities will be narrowed down to two, and one will prevail and take over hosting duties from Turin, ESC 2022 Host City.

Have the bookies correctly predicted the Eurovision 2023 Host City? Which other city could possibly intercept Glasgow’s victorious course?

Georgia: Eurovision 2023 representative will be chosen through The Voice!

After two consecutive years of internal selections, Georgia decides to chose their next representative for Eurovision Song Contest 2023, by organizing a talent show.

For the  first time since 2020, Georgia decides to once again pick their representative through a TV show. The last Georgian representative to be chosen with this method was Tornike Kipiani from the Georgian Idol 2019, who represented the country in 2021, after the cancellation of the 2020 contest. This time, the selection will be held through The Voice of Georgia, which will return to the first channel of the Georgian television.

Applications for the contest started earlier today and will be open until September 20 and can be submitted to the official website of the Georgian channel

The winner of this year’s The Voice of Georgia, apart from the contest’s prize, wins the coveted ticket of Georgia’s representation to Eurovision Song Contest 2023.

Circus Mircus represented Georgia this year with the song “Lock Me In” and ended up last (18th) in the second semi-final with 22 points.

Belgium: The national final will last five to seven weeks | The first potential candidates!

VRT wants to attract big names to participate in Eurosong 2023, the planned Belgian pre-qualifier for the Song Contest 2023. Also the duration of the national final is expected to last five to seven weeks.

Surely but steadily the first details are coming out for Belgium’s national final, the first since 2016. After Peter Van de Veire broke the news last Saturday during Zomerhit , it was then confirmed that Eurosong 2023 will not be presented by Niels Destadsbader but Van de Veire himself.

Five or seven weeks

In the meantime, the exact format for the national final has yet to be determined, although today Het Laatste Nieuws is already providing more details. The newspaper clearly talks about “a brilliant musical show that lasts for weeks”. The article states that the new version of Eurosong will last five or seven weeks (and thus possibly as many broadcasts). In 2016 the Eurosong lasted three weeks, while two years earlier it lasted seven.

Former participants

VRT seems to want a strong cast of participants, because according to the same article in Het Laatste Nieuws, the public broadcaster is targeting “a range of top artists”. Just wishlist (for now) are: The Starlings, Camille, Natalia, Regi, Laura Tesoro and Niels Destadsbader. Starlings’ Tom Dice took part in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2010 with Me and My Guitar, while Laura Tesoro was the winner of Belgium’s last national final in 2016, both finishing in the top 10 of the final standings. Natalia finished second in the 2004 qualifier behind Xandee.

It is not yet known when VRT will announce more details about Eurosong 2023, nor the dates and locations of the live shows.

The winner of ‘The Voice Belgique’ Jérémie Makiese represented Belgium at Eurovision 2022 with the song ‘Miss you’, placing 19th in the grand final with a total of 64 points.
