Eurovision 2023: Italy’s First Rehearsal!

Next Big 5 act to take the stage for his first rehearsal is Italy with Marco Mengoni, performing his song “Due Vite”!

Who is Marco Mengoni?

Marco Mengoni is an Italian singer-songwriter who rose to fame in 2009, after winning the third season of the Italian X Factor. Since then, Mengoni has managed to make a name for himself in Italy as well as abroad. At the time of writing, he’s released 7 studio albums that between them have gone 69-times platinum, has sold over 2.8 million records in Italy, has peaked the Italian albums chart seven consecutive times and entered the Top 10 Italian Singles Chart fifteen times. Marco has also won the Sanremo Festival twice, in 2013 and this year, becoming one of the few italian artists to have achieved two wins in the festival.

Marco is also not new to Eurovision, as he has previously taken part in the 2013 contest in Malmö after his first Sanremo win, managing to finish 7th with his entry L’essenziale!

The rehearsal

Marco is in leather trousers and a silver sparkly vest (for today – the Italian delegation has previously announced that he will be wearing a different outfit in each of his performances). He is backed by swirling clouds and a moon on the LED wall, as well as two male dancers and a staircase prop.

Eurovision 2023: France’s First Rehearsal!

Next Big 5 act to step on stage for her first rehearsal is La Zarra, representing France with the song “Évidemment”!

Who is La Zarra?

Fatima-Zahra Hafdi, known professionally as La Zarra, is a Canadian singer and songwriter based in France.

A self-taught musician, this chanteuse channels the style of Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe, with a healthy dose of Édith Piaf’s sense of tragedy. She rose to prominence in 2016, when she released her debut single “Printemps blanc” in collaboration with French rapper Niro. In 2021, her fame increased with the single “Tu t’en iras”, which was regularly broadcast on radio and television. In the same year, La Zarra was nominated for the NRJ Music Awards, the leading French music awards, as Francophone revelation of the year, boosted in part by the success of her debut and only album so far “Traîtrise”.

La Zarra was internally chosen by France Télévisions to represent France in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023, becoming the second Canadian singer to represent the country after Natasha St-Pier in 2001.

The Rehearsal

La Zarra stands on top of a sparkle-draped plinth wearing a fitted gown made entirely from black and red sequins. The ‘plinth’ is a moving column five metres off the ground, draped in sparkly black fabric all the way to the floor. The fabric disappears to reveal a cylindrical column with a mirror-tiled top.

Eurovision 2023: Germany’s First Rehearsal!

Today is the turn of the contest’s Big 5 to go on stage for their first rehearsals! The first Big 5 entry to take the stage is Lord of the Lost, representing Germany with “Blood & Glitter”.

Who are Lord of the Lost?

Lord of the Lost is a genre-fluid band from Hamburg which has managed to built a considerable fanbase in Germany’s industrial rock scene.

They were founded in mid-2007 by frontman Chris Harms, initially as a solo project, and released their debut single Dry the Rain and debut album Fears in 2009 and 2010 respectivelly. Fast-forward to today, their discography now consists of eight albums, with the latest four peaking in the top 10 of German charts. In fact, their latest album titled, like their Eurovision entry, Blood & Glitter, shot to the 1st place of German charts after only 6 days of pre-orders, and their most recent European tour completely sold out.

Last but definitely not least, Lord of the Lost will leave Liverpool to support Iron Maiden on tour amost immediately after the contest!

The Rehearsal

Blood & Glitter is a stand-out performance. The band are raised up on a metal scaffold in a triangle formation, with red and black LEDS and a flashing light show that never lets up for the full three minutes.

In the third run-through pyro has been added, as intense red flames accompany each chorus. There’s also fireworks to finish, and floor smoke throughout the performance.

Eurovision 2023: Belgium’s Second Rehearsal!

Next up is Belgium‘s rehearsal, represented by Gustaph singing “Because of You“.

Who is Gustaph ?

Stef Caers, also known professionally as Gustaph, is 42 years old and he comes from the Flemish speaking part of Belgium. He is an experienced artist regarding the contest, since he has already participated before as a back vocalist for Senek in 2018 and for Hooverphonic in 2021. His debut in the music industry began in 2000 while he was studying in at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent and also he used to be a vocal coach.

Gustaph’s participation in Eurovision is considered to be one of the most unexpected participations, since he was an outsider in Belgium’s Eurosong. He was not the winner of either public’s vote (second) or jury’s vote (third). However the combination of the two results gave Gustaph the golden tickret for Liverpool, who actually beat Starlings by just one point.

No matter the fact that Gustaph has generally gathered negative reviews regarding his qualification, his flawless live performances at pre parties may proove the exact opposite, since he is currently at the odds-in’s eighth place for qualification.

The Rehearsal

Unfortunately this year, accredited journalists don’t get the chance to watch the first and second rehearsals, so we only get the information and content that the organizers officially release to the public.

Belgium is the next country to keep their performance just the way it was in Monday’s first rehearsal. If everyone keeps their outfits from today, the first half of the second Semi-Final is going to be VERY pink.

It’s a pure pop song, full of love for the people who never let us down, with their good and bad moments. Gustaph has his own ladder, three singers and an all LED backdrop with vogueing, drag queens and all the people who make Gustaph’s world a better place.

In the afternoon, after the completion of all the rehearsals, a recap video will be released with short excerpts from the footage of all the second rehearsals!

Eurovision 2023: An X-Factor style for the qualifiers’ announcement in Eurovision 2023?

With a big change regarding Eurovision 2023 expected for a while, GJ Kooijman, the host of the Dutch Eurovision podcast, posted on his Twitter account a draft which indicates the plans of the organizers about the announcement of the qualifiers in the 2 Semi finals.

The qualifiers’ announcement method will allegedly change in order to make it more tense and keep the audience interest high.

https://twitter.com/gjkooijman/status/1654018115275988994?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1654018115275988994%7Ctwgr%5E705d5fc974673b91b8ad0e1293e1dd3e48afde95%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Feurovisionfun.com%2F2023%2F05%2Feurovision-2023-CF83CEB5-CF83CF84CF85CEBB-x-factor-CEB7-CEB1CEBDCEB1CEBACEBFCEAFCEBDCF89CF83CEB7-CF84CF89CEBD-CEB1CF80CEBFCF84CEB5CEBBCEB5CF83%2F

From what we see, all the contestants will be lined up on stage and the presenters, namely Hannah and Julia, will announce the first 5 qualifiers. Then, Alesha Dixon will chat with them in the small stage. The same procedure will be repeated for the 5 remaining finalists.

After announcing all the 10 finalists, the contestants not qualified for the Grand Final will leave the stage and the show will finish with the 10 finalists on stage and the recap from their performances.

With this change, the hosts want to keep the excitement, after being accused for many years that the qualifiers’ announcement has lost its suspense being conducted really fast.

The above-mentioned information is not 100% accurate and confirmed by the hosts. We will have to wait until the dress rehearsals on Monday in order to find out!

Eurovision 2023: Estonia’s Second Rehearsal!

Next up on the stage  is EstoniaAlika with her song “Bridges” is ready for her second rehearsal on the stage of M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool!

Who is Alika?

Alika was born in Narva in Estonia on 5 September 2002. She has been performing since she was four years old, and has participated in many televised singing competitions including ‘The Baltic Voice’, ‘New Wave Junior’, ‘Kaunas Talent’, ‘Bravo Song Contest’ and ‘Berlin Perle’. Alika rose to fame after winning the eighth season of ‘Eesti otsib superstaari’ (Estonian Idol), securing more than 70% of the vote in the final.

Her first three singles, ÕnnenumberBon Appetit, and C’est La Vie, all reached the top of the radio charts in Estonia, solidifying her popularity in her home country. She’s participating in Eurovision 2023 with Bridges, which she wrote with Wouter Hardy, who co-wrote Duncan Laurence’s Eurovision winning song Arcade.

The Rehearsal

Unfortunately this year, accredited journalists don’t get the chance to watch the first and second rehearsals, so we only get the information and content that the organizers officially release to the public.

Everything on Estonia’s performance remains just the way it was on Monday’s first rehearsal – on point!

On stage we see the first piano for this year so far. It’s exactly the same one we saw in Eesti Laul.

Alika has a very strong voice. Also, the lighting and graphics of the Liverpool stage look great and there isn’t a square inch of the floor and LED’s that isn’t used here, giving a dramatic tone to the performance.

Eurovision 2023: Romania’s Second Rehearsal!

Coming up next for his second rehearsal is Theodor Andrei from Romania, who is going to perform his song named “D.G.T. (Off and On)“.

Who is Theodor Andrei ?

Theodor Andrei was born in Bucharest, Romania in 2004 and he is just 18 years old! He became widely known by participating in the talent show “Vocea Romanei Junior”, which is the Romanian version of “The Voice Kids”, back in 2017, when he managed to reach the semifinals. Later, in 2020, he took part in the Romanian “X Factor”, where he stopped at bootcamps. Two years later, his debut album named “Fragil” was realised.

After having won the national final of Romania, among eleven artists, Theodor Andrei took the ticket for Liverpool no matter the fact that he was not consiered as the favorite one in advance. However, the public who were 100% in charge of the final result gave him the win.

The Rehearsal

Unfortunately this year, accredited journalists don’t get the chance to watch the first and second rehearsals, so we only get the information and content that the organizers officially release to the public.

Romania is surprising us with the second outfit change of the day. The yellow outfit we saw on Monday’s first rehearsal is now changed to a pink one, which organizers describe as the same candyfloss pink as the one used for Reiley from Denmark. Also the Pikachu socks have been replaced by Spongebob ones!

The live version of the song is completely different from the recorded one – the first half of the song is only accompanied by a guitar and Theodor’s voice, almost acoustic. The second half is stronger, with a clear rock tempo in a performance that feels much more intimate, with Theodor bringing ALL his energy to the stage. The finale is quite impressive, as Theodor is joined by a dancer.

Eurovision 2023: The bets after the fourth day of rehearsals!

The favourite column of many of you is back, as the betting analysis for the 67th Eurovision Song Contest is back again.

With one week to go until the Eurovision 2023 semi-finals, we take a look at the betting companies’ odds regarding each country’s chances of winning this year’s contest.

Top 5

Largely unchanged remains the situation at the top of the betting tables, with Loreen and Sweden seen as the heavy favourites to win the 67th Eurovision Song Contest. Despite the fact that the rehearsal clips of the Swedish entry were flawed, especially compared to their Melodifestivalen performance, Sweden are still being played at odds of under 2.

Finland, who are one of the winners of the first days in Liverpool, have increased their chances of victory. Käärijä and “Cha Cha Cha” are steadily gaining ground, making them Loreen’s rival in this year’s contest. The lowest odds on the Finnish win are being played at 3.6, with most companies having dropped Finland’s odds below 3.

In third, fourth and fifth place the situation remains stable, with Ukraine, France and Spain rounding out the Top 5. As all three of them start their rehearsals at the Liverpool Arena today, we wait to see whether the view of the bookers who place them within the top five will change. Ukraine and France return up to 15 times the money of anyone who bets on them, while Spain return 17 times. In any case, the differences between them are infinitesimal.

Top 10

In the remaining five places in the top ten we find three countries that have already made their appearance on the stage of this year’s contest and two countries that are starting their rehearsals today ahead of the 67th Eurovision Song Contest.

In sixth place is Norway and in seventh place is Israel. Both are participating in the first semi-final, with their odds after yesterday’s release of the 30-second clip not particularly altering their odds of winning this year’s contest. Slightly worse odds for Norway who are now at 21, slightly better for Israel whose odds of victory for the explosive Noa Kirel have dropped to 26.

Stable remains Austria in eighth place, with their win odds having dropped at some companies, however Teya & Salina‘s win returns up to 41 times the stake at some companies. Ninth place goes to Italy and Marco Mengoni, with odds ranging between 26 and 51, while the top ten is completed by the UK at odds of 81.

First Semifinal

As part of this analysis, we will also take a first look at the odds of qualifying for the grand final. We start with the first semi-final, for which the participating countries have already finished their first two rehearsals on stage at the Liverpool Arena and will return on Monday for show rehearsals.

Six countries are considered a given to qualify, with Sweden, Finland, Norway, Israel, the Czech Republic and Moldova offered by bookers at odds of under 1.10. Significantly, the odds on the top four countries in particular return almost nothing to those who bet on them. For example, in the event that someone bets ten euros on their qualification, they will only make a profit of ten cents of a euro.

Serbia seems to be in a league of its own, being considered the seventh favourite to qualify for the grand final on 13 May. Luke Black’s qualification is offered at odds of around 1.30, with a clear distance between himself and both the leading and trailing countries.

A battle of four countries is expected for the remaining three spots leading to the grand final, according to betting companies. Croatia, Switzerland and Portugal appear to be in the best position, with the Netherlands currently seen as the eleventh favourite to qualify for the Eurovision 2023 grand final. Croatia is being played at 1.50, Switzerland at 1.53, Portugal at 1.57 and the Netherlands at 1.73. One understands that the differences between them are marginal and, therefore, qualification will be decided at the threshold.

The following countries, namely Malta, Latvia and Ireland, are considered less likely to qualify with their qualification odds being between 3 and 4, while Azerbaijan is by far in last place having the least chance of qualifying.

Second Semifinal

Regarding the second semi-final, things are even more difficult. Sixteen countries are participating in this semi-final, with twelve of them being played at odds of less than 2. It is understandable that bookers cannot easily come up with the top ten that will qualify for the final.

Austria, Australia, Cyprus and Armenia are seen by bookmakers as certain to qualify, with their qualification returning up to 1.1 times the stake. Largely similar is the case with Lithuania and Slovenia, who are being played at 1.20.

Seventh-placed Georgia is in a league of its own, with odds of between 1.25 and 1.29, with the possibility of qualification the most prevalent, while the same could be said for eighth-placed Belgium, which is being played at 1.35.

Rounding out the top ten are Poland and Denmark, who gained ground after the release of their first rehearsal snippet on TikTok. Both are being played at odds of less than 1.57.

Eleventh place Greece is being played at odds of between 1.40 and 1.83, though still within the top ten at some companies. Among the losers of the early rehearsals is Estonia, whose odds of qualifying for the grand final on 13 May have gone up. The maximum odds offered for qualification are the same as Greece’s, at 1.83.

Albania has a significant chance of qualifying, albeit less compared to the leading countries, and is one of the most Value for Money betting options for this semi-final. The only ethnic song in the semi-final is being played at odds between 2 and 2.63.

The bookies are also giving qualification odds to Iceland, which is being played at 3. On the other hand, the elimination of Romania and San Marino, whose qualification returns up to 8.5 times the stake, is almost taken for granted.
