Latvia confirms participation. The search for Eurovision 2024 begins!

Latvia has joined the list of countries confirming their participation for Eurovision 2024.  The first details for their selection process have been revealed today.  First of all, Latvia will start their search for their new Eurovision representative through their national final Supernova.  The country has renewed for another year Supernova as their national final for Eurovision.

Supernova 2024

Starting from tomorrow until December 1st, 2023, the applications are open.  Artists can send their proposals via public broadcaster’s LTV website.  LTV will announce the final list of participants for Supernova 2024 on January 2024.  Following the first announcement of the songs, the wishful representatives will compete in a semi-final and a grand final that will take place in February.  A split vote from the audience and a jury will decide the winner of Supernova which will represent Latvia in Malmö.

This will be Latvia’s 24th Eurovision representative.  The Baltic country won the contest in 2002 with Marie N’s I Wanna.  Unfortunately, Latvia has struggled to qualify for the final in recent times. Last time we watched Latvia in the final was in 2016.

Who will represent Latvia in 2024?  Will they break the non-qualification streak?

United Kingdom: The search for the Eurovision 2024 entry has begun!

According to BBC2 DJ and Eurovision presenter Scott Mills, the UK is already on the hunt for its next Eurovision representative.

In particular, he stated:

“Well, I will tell you that meetings are already underway that I might be in and I actually think that honestly, it was a disappointing result for Mae. Was the song better received initially than ‘Spaceman’? Yes. Was it a top 10 hit? Yes. Normally you hear the chat on Christmas Day of ‘we’re rubbish at that, aren’t we?’ I’m not hearing that chat this year.”

When asked what he thinks is the problem with the country failing to score highly in the competition, Scott replied:

“What we need to do this year is we need to send… this is the problem! Well, not the problem but here’s where we differ [with other nations]. The thing is, Israel will just send their best popstar. We can’t do that because we have global megastar popstars. It’s a catch 22 situation because people that don’t really understand it, just go, ‘get Adele to do it,’ but it doesn’t work like that! In Israel they’ll send Noa Kirel who has won a ridiculous amount of MTV awards and is a fully fledged Israeli incredible pop star. We don’t have that privilege, or we’re not in that situation,”

As we previously reported, the United Kingdom will be conducting an internal selection for Eurovision 2024.

Last year, Mae Muller, despite being in the top ten of the bets throughout the season, settled for the penultimate place in the leaderboard after her performance with “I Wrote A Song”.

Slovakia: RTVS General Director on the prospects for the country’s return!

The Director General of Slovak Public Television Luboš Machaj discussed the country’s chances of returning to the Eurovision contest, in an interview he gave to Aktuality.sk.

Slovakia took part in the contest for the first time in 1994 and has since participated seven times, with its best result being  Marcel Palonder’s 18th place in 1996. From 1998 to 2008 the country was absent from the contest, while in 2009 they returned and participated until 2012, without being able to qualify for the final. Its subsequent departure was not due to poor results, but to the inability of public television to meet the cost of participation.

Statements by the Director General of RTVS

L. Machaj clarified that the financial requirements of a Eurovision participation do not allow the country to return to the 2024 competition.

We are indeed one of the few countries that do not broadcast Eurovision. The requirements, both in the economic and in the preparation field, are quite high. If all the problems are solved, in 2024 we will declare that in one year we will return to the competition. We have also received relatively good offers for this return. The amount required is not a big problem, but it is not insignificant.

He then referred to the method that RTVS would like to follow for the selection of the representative, if of course the country returns.

We must also decide by what method our entry will be chosen. In 2012 we were represented by Miro Šmajda, whose proposal, from the beginning, provided that the cost of participation would be covered by the sponsors behind him. Eurovision is a pan-European affair and Slovakia should also be represented in it.

At Eurovision 2024 Luxembourg has already confirmed its return, among others, while there are chances that Monaco will also return. Could Slovakia be the next country to return to the contest?

Romania: A potential withdrawal in 2024?

Regardless, Ovi’s(Romania 2010,2014) and Mihai Trăistariu’s(Romania 2006) intention to be involved with Eurovision in 2024, rumors have spread the past hours about a possible withdrawal of Romania from Eurovision.

According to Libertatea, TVR sources claim that Romania does not plan to participate in next year’s edition in Malmö. The reason behind the rumored withdrawal is financial issues. No official statement has been made yet from TVR, though the rumors are still circulating.

TVR’s response regarding the participation of Romania in 2024 is the following:

The subject of participation in Eurovision 2024 was not discussed at the level of SRTv management, which is why, for now, no decision has been made in this regard.

Romania’s participation has to be first approved by the Board of Directors, as the budget needed exceeds 100.000 euros and be confirmed to EBU till the 15th of September.

The alternative perspective

The story doesn’t end there. According to the official Eurovision Romania Community, TVR has not confirmed its position yet regarding its participation. The most likely scenario is that Romania will take part in Sweden next year. Meanwhile, it is unknown in which way the Romanian entry will be chosen, as there are some options that the broadcaster is considering at the moment. Furthermore, TVR has already proceeded to the creation of the 2024 Eurovision website.

https://twitter.com/ERCommunity_/status/1700179885946294702

Bearing in mind the fixed charges needed to be covered from TVR, leaving limited budget for the artistic team and the bad result in Liverpool, a withdrawal could seem like a reasonable scenario. The lack of funds killed the chances of Theodor Andrei’s qualification this year. He was left with no budget, producing even his own official video-clip. He ended up second to last in his semifinal, with nul points.

The information given by the Romanian sources are indeed contradictory. We will have to wait until the official announcement of the participation countries, which is expected in late October.

Romania: Mihai Trăistariu is willing to participate in Eurovision 2024!

It seems that Ovi (Romania 2010,2014) is not the only Romanian former Eurovision artist that is preparing for Eurovision 2024.

Mihai Trăistariu recently announced that he is willing to participate in Eurovision 2024 and therefore is looking for the composer of his entry. Specifically, he posted the following on his Facebook account:

I’m looking for a composer with a current sound, with whom to work a wow song for Eurovision 2024. Recommendations?

Although, his return will come true under one condition. Trăistariu does not plan to pay the composer for the song that will make.

As he has stated:

I don’t pay anything because I’ve never paid for a song. I follow the same principle that I’m Mihai Trăistariu and whoever wants to send me a good song, gives it to me. “Tornero” was not paid.

His unwillingness to pay the composer in advance derives from his belief that in case his song wins and represents Romania in Eurovision both of them will profit. The same thing occurred with “Tornero”:

I’ve never paid for my hits and I don’t want to teach songwriters that way, because that’s how it seems natural to me. Noted artists are given songs as gifts, because they earn from the royalties afterwards.

The composer of “Tornero”, Eduard Cârcotă, earns even today half of the copyrights. And, if I made a few hundred thousand euros, he made maybe millions. I have 140 songs on my albums and I haven’t paid for a single one!

The Romanian artist represented his country in the contest back in 2006, with the song “Tornero”, which finished in fourth place and became a massive European hit. He has also tried again to represent Romania in multiple occasions, in 2016,2017,2018 and 2019 without success.

Will Mihai Trăistariu overturn the tables for Romania and help his country regain its old prestige in Eurovision? Stay tuned on EurovisionFun for all news!

Germany: The application platform for Eurovision 2024 has been opened – When will the selection take place?

German broadcaster NDR has officially confirmed that the national final for choosing the nation’s Eurovision 2024 entry will take place on February 16, 2024, under the new moniker “Das Deutsche Finale 2024” (The 2024 German Final). The application platform launched at the same time that the regulations were made available to the public.

The rules haven’t changed significantly despite the name change for the German national final. These are the announcement’s primary takeaways:

  • From today (7 September) to 5 October 2023, bands and artists can submit their applications on the website eurovision.de. They can also use the hashtag #EurovisionGermany2024 on TikTok to share their submission.
  • NDR emphasizes that all musicians are welcome, regardless of genre.
  • Artists that are interested can enter with or without a song. Later on, the matching of songs and performers will take place. But regardless of whether they include a song or not, all submissions must be accompanied by a video showcasing their vocal abilities.
  • The Eurovision rules should be adhered to by musicians that submit songs. These tracks must not be longer than 3 minutes and cannot be older than 1 September 2023. Last but not least, there are no language restrictions for the lyrical portion.

Germany was represented this year by Lord of the Lost with the song “Blood and Glitter”. The band, which is well-known in Germany, came in last place overall, with a total of 18 points. Will Germany be able to recover from its string of poor results and move to the left side of the leaderboard?

Will Germany’s Eurovision participation be taken over by a different broadcaster?

A different broadcaster taking over Germany’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest starting in 2025 is a real option that is now being considered, according to a report from the German media outlet DWDL earlier today. More precisely, it is said that the ARD is thinking about granting another ARD member control over the German participation, which has previously been handled by the NDR.

What is ARD?

ARD is the consortium of local German television stations. Choosing which broadcaster will handle the country’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest is one of the group’s duties.

What changes are under discussion?

The most likely scenario, according to the same sources, is that Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) will take over Germany’s participation. MDR is ideal for this role thanks to its string of consistently strong television ratings.

It is significant to note that, if determined, the aforementioned modifications will be put into effect after 2025. The NDR will therefore continue to be in charge of the nation’s participation in Eurovision 2024. In actuality, no official conversations on this matter are currently taking place, according to remarks made by MDR officials.

What caused these thoughts to arise?

Germany’s ongoing poor results in the competition spurred consideration of these modifications. Since 2015, the nation has continuously placed in the bottom two spots of the rankings, with the exception of Michael Schulte’s fourth-place finish in 2018. Naturally, this has resulted in unfavorable domestic responses. Therefore, in accordance with the DWDL, the NDR no longer desires to be the focal point of these conflicts.

This year, Germany was represented by Lord of the Lost and the song “Blood and Glitter”. The band, which is well-known in Germany, came in last place overall, with a total of 18 points. Could these alterations put an end to Germany’s series of unsatisfactory results and lead to a respectable position?

As we have previously informed you, TVMonaco, Monaco’s new state broadcaster, has begun its operation a few days ago.

With the inaugural operation of TVMonaco, a reasonable question was posed among Eurovision fans, on whether will Monaco be eligible and eager to compete in the next Eurovision edition in Malmö. It is now confirmed that Monaco is eligible to participate in EBU events and shows, as TVMonaco is a part of MMD (Monaco Media Difussion), which is an EBU member.

What is the MMD?

MMD is an active member of the EBU and hence qualifies for the Eurovision event. Monaco Media Diffusion includes radio stations as well as the recently founded TVMonaco. It holds the sole broadcast radio and television license in Monaco. MCR is licensed to use all frequencies designated and allotted to Monaco by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

Since TVMonaco is now an eligible member, it is up to the state broadcaster to decide whether the microstate will take part in Eurovision again in 2024. If TVMonaco or MMD intends to compete in the next Eurovision in Sweden, it must submit its application by September 15, 2023.

In case, Monaco returns to Malmö, there will be two countries coming back after many years of absence, the other one being Luxembourg.

Monaco after being absent for 24 years, returned in 2004 and stepped back once more in 2007, not managing to qualify in none of its last attempts. The full list of participants will be revealed until the end of October, when we will certainly know whether or not Monaco will participate.

Romania: Will Ovi return to Eurovision in 2024?

Through a Facebook post, Ovi (Ovi Jacobsen) disclosed that he is currently in the studio working on a potential Eurovision 2024 entry!

Along with Paula Seling, the well-known singer has twice flown the Romanian flag. In fact, they placed third in their initial entry with the song “Playing with fire” in 2010, which is at the moment Romania’s second-best finish. They also performed the song “Miracle” at their second appearance in 2014, finishing in 12th place and just two points outside the top 10.

Romania has not revealed any plans regarding its participation in the 68th edition of the competition up until this point. Consequently, we are unaware of whether its entry, if the country participates as normal, will be picked via selecția națională or using a different procedure.

Furthermore, there isn’t a clear indication in the post as to which country is the subject of the submission or whether Ovi’s contribution is confined to songwriting or also includes singing the song.

These inquiries will receive an answer in the upcoming months!
