Eurovision 2022: Seven songs that won the televoting but not the national final!

The national finals of the Eurovision 2022 have been completed! We now know all the artists and songs that will compete in Turin in May and fight for the win.

Out of the 40 participating countries, 28 selected their representative through  a national final, while only 12 by an internal selection.

In this tribute we will have a look at seven entries that won the televoting in their country’s national final, but the judges had a different opinion, which resulted in them being deprived of the victory.

Australia

The rock band Voyager, with the song Dreamer, was the winner of the Australian televoting. However, the third place awarded to them by the judges was enough to cost them the win.

Czech Republic

The Czech Republic has continued its selection through an online national final this year. The Czech public chose as the winners Jordan Haj and Emma Smetana, who are very well known in the country, with the song By Now. However, the last place given to them by the international jury deprived them of the victory.

North Macedonia

After many years, North Macedonia has returned with a national final for its participation. The winner of the TV audience was Viktor Apostolovski with Superman. Although he tied with Andrea on the first place, after the votes were tallied the country’s public television decided to override the jury’s score, in which he was in the third place.

Romania

Romania, who recorded three eliminations in recent years, came back with a national final. A choice that, however, disappointed the fanbase of the country, as the percentage of preference of the TV audience was only 10%, with the remaining 90% belonging to the jury, which, as expected, determined the final result.

The winner of the televoting with a small difference and yet a small percentage was Dora Gaitanovici with the song Ana, who came sixth in the jury.

Spain

The fan favorite Tanxugueiras, with the song Terra, achieved an unbelievable 70.75% in the Spanish public vote. However, the panel of experts ranked them fifth, which resulted in them not only failing to achieve the victory but also creating a lot of drama.

Sweden

Anders Bagge with the song Bigger than the Universe, won the vote of the Swedish TV audience by a large margin. However, the international judges ranked it eighth, and as a result, it ended up losing the win.

Ukraine

Alina Pash with Tini Zabutykh Predkiv was the winner of Vidbir 2022. Although she withdrew from Eurovision due to her way of entering Crimea, she was the runner-up in the TV audience vote.

Winners of the televoting and subsequent representatives of Ukraine in Eurovision 2022, by a wide margin, were the Kalush Orchestra with their song Stefania. In the jury votes they were the runner-up.

These were the seven countries whose result was overturned by the jury, without letting the televoters’ choice be heard and calling into question the objectivity and existence of the juries once again.

Spain: “SloMo was actually meant for Jennifer Lopez”!

It may sound like it was written in Seville, Madrid or Barcelona, but in fact this year’s Spanish entry in the Eurovision Song Contest was created in Velsen-Noord, a small town in the north of the Netherlands. Dutch producer Arjen Thonen reveals that he actually composed Chanel’s SloMo for Jennifer Lopez, but when the Latin star didn’t respond, the song found its way to Turin.

Even those who don’t know the story behind SloMo are likely to think of Jennifer Lopez when watching the video clip. Chanel Terrero‘s dance moves, energy and upbeat vibe seem to be quite similar to various songs that JLo has released from time to time.

Beeld uit de videoclip van SloMo, de Spaanse inzending voor het Eurovisie Songfestival. Zangeres Chanel zingt het lied dat is gemaakt door de Nederlandse producer Arjen Thonen.

Thonen, with more than ten years of experience in the music industry, composed a remix for the Black Eyed PeasPump It, which led to the development of a friendly relationship between himself and the band’s drummer Keith Harris, who is also a producer.

Harris knew that Jennifer Lopez was looking for some new material and asked Thonen to submit a proposal.

“I was in the studio in the middle of the summer and by the end of the day I was kind of having a song that wasn’t exactly in Jennifer Lopez’s style. Then, I spontaneously kept going all night and that’s how SloMo came out.”

The song, in lyrics by Canadian singer Maggie Szabo, was sent via Keith Harris to the US, but there was no reaction from JLo’s team. The song was “left on the shelf”, while Thonen focused on other productions.

“Keith suddenly sent me an email saying that they were looking for a Jennifer-Lopez-like song in Spain to compete at Benidorm Fest. Of course he’s American, so he added: “In case you don’t know about the competition, it’s the biggest music event in Europe. I would do it.””

Producer Arjen Thonen, die het nummer SloMo van zangeres Chanel maakte.

The song was accepted, with new Spanish lyrics, and so Thonen watched the Benidorm Fest final on 29 January, where of course he was thrilled to see Chanel with SloMo officially becoming Spain’s representative for Turin.

SloMo has already surpassed 6 million streams on Spotify and is doing quite well with the bookmakers respectively as it is currently standing in eighth place.

“I am very happy that this song ended up being part of such a beautiful event”

Will the JLo team regret seeing Chanel in Turin? Will JLo herself ever learn the story behind this song?

Spain: The detailed results of Benidorm Fest 2022 have been published!

The detailed results of Benidorm Fest 2022, the national final of Spain, were announced by RTVE a while ago. As you will see below, the winner, Chanel, gathered less than 4% of the public vote.

Widespread reactions have erupted in Spain, as Galician political parties have already stated that they will raise the issue in the House of Representatives. Tanxugueiras who won the public vote are from Galicia and sung a song in Galician.
