Netherlands: Is Douwe Bob coming back for Eurovision 2024?

The first non-qualification in Eurovision for the Netherlands after six consecutive qualifications and even one win, caused many internal changes in the Dutch delegation. AVROTROS appointed a new head of delegation and there will be changes in the internal selection to come.

The Dutch delegation ruled out a massive change in the selection process and the conduction of a national final right from the start, due to low interest from the Dutch music industry. Instead, and according to the new head of delegationTwan van de Nieuwenhuijzen, the changes that will be made to the existing system in order to ensure transparency, will include live performances of the candidates and people outside of AVROTROS in the jury.

In this open internal selection, Douwe Bob, Dutch representative in Eurovision 2016, might want to compete. As his manager stated in Shownieuws, the singer wants to compete in the internal selection, saying that:

“Douwe Bob would like to compete again in Eurovision. Even though we do not have any specific song, we hope to submit one”

Douwe Bob represented the Netherlands in Eurovision 2016 in Stockholm, with his song “Slow Down” ending up in 11th place. He is not the only artist that want to compete in Eurovision 2024. Both Bizzey & Kraantje Pappie as a duet, as well as De Bankzitters want to submit songs.

The Netherlands: AVROTROS opens songs submission and announces new Head of Delegation!

The national broadcaster of the Netherlands, AVROTROS, made two important Eurovision related announcements today.

The first announcement is about the selection method for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Malmö, Sweden. For a 12th consecutive year, the broadcaster chooses the internal selection, with the songs submissions commencing today until the 30th of September. The only change this time is that the songs do not have to have set artists.

The second announcement is about the position of the Head of Delegation. AVROTROS stated that the position of the Head of Delegation was appointed to Twan van de Nieuwenhuijzen who is also going to be the chairman of the Dutch selection committee.

In his previous position he was the Head of Contest for the EBU during Eurovision 2021, 2022, and 2023.

This year the Kingdom of the Netherlands was represented in Liverpool by Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper and the song “Burning Daylight”.  They ended up in the 13th place of the First Semi-Final, receiving only 7 points and thus failing to qualify to the Grand Final.

The Netherlands: National final for Eurovision 2024?

After Mia Nicolai & Dion Cooper were heavily criticized for their vocal performance in their two appearances at the eurovision preparties, AVROTROS director Eric van Stade hinted that holding a national final for the selection of the country’s participation in Eurovision next year is being considered.

He explained to the Dutch press office ANP that the return of such a selection method has been discussed many times in recent years:

“Even after the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest, the decision whether the Dutch entry should be chosen by the public or not will be discussed again, in a serious way with all involved. We have to look for a concept that works. Of course, we’ve all seen this not work in the past. We want to avoid that.”

The Netherlands used the Nationaal Songfestival as a selection method in the years 2009-2012. During this time period, the Netherlands failed to qualify for the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest.

In 2013, the country returned to selecting its entry internally, with Anouk finishing in the top 10. The following year, the Netherlands reached second place in the final with “Calm After The Storm”, performed by The Common Linnets. Finally, the Netherlands won in 2019 with internally selected “Arcade” by Duncan Laurence.

We remind you that the Eurovision commentator for the Netherlands, Cornald Maas, has expressed his negative attitude towards the possibility of holding a national final to select the country’s future representatives.

Netherlands: Duncan Laurence was recruited to rescue “Burning Daylight”!

The situation with this year’s Dutch participation in the contest appears to be more serious than expected. After the official statment that the country’s public broadcaster (Avrotros) was forced to take, due to the wave of negative comments received after Mia & Dion‘s live appearances at the Eurovision pre parties, now the last winner of the Netherlands and composer of the song with which the two young artists will compete in Liverpool – Duncan Laurence, announces that was recruited to help them in the battle they have to fight in the first difficult semi-final.

Duncan Laurence, with a post on his social networks, informs his fans that he will postpone the planned release of his new song, as well as other obligations he had, since in the next period he will focus exclusively on Mia & Dion and how they will perform better their song, Burning Daylight, in Liverpool.

This statement comes after Eric van Stade, a representative of Avrotros, who on RTL Boulevard, described precisely the problem facing this year’s representatives of the country in the contest:

We know what’s wrong, the whole of Holland has seen it. The creative team working on it is now continuing, right at those points, to get the vocals right… There were two new artists, two new talents. Only this year we see that the step (they have to take) to the big stage is much bigger than in previous years when we worked with young talents.

We remind you that this year’s Dutch participation was internally selected by the country’s public television. However, the Netherlands seems to be considering changing the selection system next year and returning to the national final method.

Netherlands: “We know what’s wrong with it, the creative team is working on to get the vocals right”!

In a rare act of self-criticism by a broadcaster, shortly before rehearsals begins in Liverpool, Dutch public broadcaster made a statement about its entry in this year’s contest and the problems it faces!

After the heavy criticism Mia Nicolai & Dion Cooper received for their two appearances at the Eurovision promo parties and their very mediocre vocal performance, Avrotros have officially taken a stand. Eric van Stade from AVROTROS reported to RTL Boulevard:

“Mia and Dion have now performed twice. We have let them practice on purpose and we have seen that things are not going well yet…We know what’s wrong with it, the whole of the Netherlands has seen that. The creative team that is working on it is now continuing, precisely on those points, to get the vocals right”.

The criticism that Avrotros received after the performances of Mia and Dion in Madrid and Amsterdam respectively had to do with the inexperience of the two artists and whether the Dutch public television finally chose correctly this year for the competition.

“We also chose the best song this year. There were two young artists, two young talents. Only this year we see that the step to the big stage is much bigger than the previous years that we worked with young talent.

There is a lot of justified criticism, but we know what they can do and we are guiding them intensively and we have faith in them. Together we are on the road to Liverpool.”

We remind you that their song is signed by Duncan Laurence and that they were selected internally for another year by Dutch public television. The Netherlands after too many years face the very possible scenario of elimination, since they are in 11th place in the betting to qualify for the final.

In any case, they really deserve congratulations, as in similar cases that have happened in the past, the respective public broadcasters hide the problem under the carpet and pretend that nothing is happening. It’s one of the rare times (I personally can’t remember another), that a broadcaster officially confirms what everyone is commenting on, seeing the live performances of their artists.
