Eurovision 2024: Which rehearsal has the most views on TikTok?

Two days ago, the first rehearsals for all 37 entries officially concluded, and today the second rehearsals are expected to be completed, with the Big 5 and the host country Sweden taking the stage at the Malmö Arena for the second time! This means that we are getting closer to the Eurovision week, with the Dress and Jury Rehearsals for the first semi-final starting on Monday.

However, as we know on TikTok, all the first rehearsals are uploaded. Apart from their performances, we’ll also get a sneak peek backstage before they take the stage for the first time in a video of about one minute.

One of the many features of TikTok is the ability to add songs to each user’s video creation. However, the TikTok algorithm is usually able to detect the song used in the video, assign it to the correct track, and then include it in the total number of videos where that sound has been used. Based on this capability, the most popular songs before rehearsals were from the Netherlands and Italy. Will they receive the same promotion as before?

The ranking with all the entries (in brackets will be the day of the rehearsal) based on the increasing number of views after one week from the start of the first rehearsals on TikTok is as follows:

TikTok has played a significant role in the success of Eurovision songs in recent years. For example, Duncan Laurence’s winning entry “Arcade” became a global hit a year after winning the competition when it was used in over a million videos on TikTok. One of the earliest TikTok successes from Eurovision was Getter Jaani’s “Rockefeller Street”, which went viral on the platform in 2018 and has since been used in over two million videos. Let’s not forget that Armenia’s entry in 2022 by Rosa Linn with “Snap” gained over a billion views on the platform. Finally, Norway’s entry last year gained significant worldwide publicity months before the competition week, where it secured fifth place.

Eurovision 2024: Which rehearsal had the most views on the first day?

Yesterday, the big moment we’ve all been waiting for has arrived! Rehearsals began with the first seven countries of the first semi-final taking the stage.

In less than 24 hours (April 28, 2024, time 17:20 CET), since the first clip from the rehearsals was uploaded, we have a indicative sample of which rehearsal was favored by the audience (here it should be noted that the videos were uploaded one after the other with a one and a half hour interval and there was a significant delay in their publication).

The rehearsals that had the most views are:

  1. Poland: LUNAThe Tower – 711.3 thousand views
  2. Ukraine: alyona alyona & Jerry HeilTeressa & Maria – 608.1 thousand views
  3. Serbia: Teya DoraRamonda – 606.7 thousand views
  4. Croatia: Baby Lasagna Rim Tim Tagi Dim – 484.7 thousand views
  5. Ireland: Bambie ThugDoomsday Blue – 208.7 thousand views
  6. Cyprus: Silia KapsisLiar -195.8 thousand views
  7. Lithiania: Silvester BeltLuktelk – 193 thousand views

With this small sample, we can infer that:

  • Poland’s performance possibly appealed to fans, with the caveat that the stage presence was a surprise – either positively or negatively.
  • The rehearsals of Ukraine and Serbia also gained huge popularity, surpassing the following four positions in views, demonstrating their strength in the semifinal.
  • Croatia, as one of the major favorites of the competition, did not gather particularly high views, although fans and betting companies have placed it at the top for victory, resulting in the stage presence not making enough of an impression.
  • Similarly, Lithuania did not impress fans at all, as it maintained the same appearance as its national final.

TikTok has played a significant role in the success of Eurovision songs in recent years. For example, Duncan Laurence’s winning entry “Arcade” became a global hit a year after winning the competition when it was used in over a million videos on TikTok. Silvester Belt, the representative of Lithuania at Eurovision 2024, met the Ukrainian representatives backstage during the concert. They had the opportunity to get acquainted, converse, exchange pleasantries, and teach each other various phrases in their native languages.

“It’s wonderful that they wanted to get to know each other, to connect, to communicate, and to maintain a beautiful friendship from the beginning. The performers were very charming, friendly, and I have no doubt that they are ready to impress Europe. I feel honored because I have already become a fan of theirs. I believe they will be at the top. At least in my personal ranking, for sure. We must remember that the war is not over yet; it continues, so we need to focus and make sacrifices,” Silvester Belt stated on LRT.lt.

Timur Miroshnychenko hopes that Ukraine will manage to host Eurovision next year!

Eurovision commentator on behalf of the Ukrainian nation television and one of the hosts of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017, Timur Miroshnychenko mentioned in an interview that he hopes Ukraine will be able to host next year’s Eurovision edition!

Timur spoke to Eurovoix’s podcast, where he expressed his optimism for this year’s Ukrainian entry. More specifically, according to him, “Teresa & Maria” has all the qualities needed in order to bring the Eurovision trophy and ultimately, the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 back to Ukraine.

In the upcoming years, maybe next year, we will get the opportunity to host Eurovision in Ukraine. I want all people from different European countries and the rest of the world to have the chance to come to Ukraine and listen themselves all the “thank you” words from Ukrainian people.

Looking back at the Ukrainian victory in 2022, brought by Kalush Orchestra with the song “Stefania”, Timur noted the fact that it would be the most important broadcasting of his career:

Of course we understood that there are millions of people throughout the world who support us… but that night all of us Ukrainians, we realised we are not alone.

Although Ukraine won in 2022, it was not possible for them to host the Contest, due to the ongoing conflict between the country and Russia, after the latter’s attack. Therefore EBU decided to hold the Contest in Liverpool with BBC.

This year, Ukraine is represented by Alyona Alyona and Jerry Heil with ‘Teresa & Maria” and right now, they are the big favorite to win the Contest, taking into consideration the betting odds.

Ukraine: Alyona Alyona & Jerry Heil will represent the country in Malmö with “Teresa & Maria”!

Tonight it was Ukraine’s turn to select their entry for Eurovision 2024. Just a while ago, Vidbir 2024, the Ukrainian national selection for Eurovision 2024, was concluded. Vidbir served for another year as the country’s selection method for Eurovision and was broadcasted live from Kyiv, Ukraine. The national final was scheduled for yesterday but because of a technical problem, which caused the crush of Diia app, via which the audience’s votes were casted, there could not be a valid result yesterday. Instead, the voting platform remained open till a while ago and following a new broadcast, we now have a winner.

Hosted by Timur Miroshnychenko, Yuliya Sanina and Vasyl Baidak and following the combination of votes from a national jury, the members of which were selected by the Ukrainian public via on online poll and televoting, Alyona Alyona & Jerry Heil were crowned as the winners with their song “Teresa & Maria“.

389 entries were submitted to the Ukrainian broadcaster, out of which twenty were long-listed. The twenty long-listed entries were reduced to ten and among the remaining ten, an online poll was held in order to determine the artist who would join the final line-up. Hence, a total of eleven acts advanced to the televised final of Vidbir 2024 and were the following:

  1. YAKTAK  —  “Lalala”
  2. INGRET  —  “Keeper”
  3. NAZVA  —  “Slavic English”
  4. ANKA  —  “Palala”
  5. Drevo  —  “Endless chain”
  6. alyona alyona & Jerry Heil  —  “Teresa & Maria”
  7. MÉLOVIN  —  “DREAMER”
  8. SKYLERR  —  “Time is running out”
  9. Ziferblat  —  “Place I Call Home”
  10. YAGODY  —  “Tsunamia”
  11. NAHABA  —  “GLASS”

Vidbir 2024 – in detail

YAKTAK  —  “Lalala

An energetic performance by YAKTAK. Full of lights, lasers and with a memorable choreography, it was a perfect opener for tonight’s show. Vocally-wise there could be many improvements. A radio-friendly song and as highlighted by the judges, uncertain whether it is suitable for the Eurovision stage.

INGRET  —  “Keeper

A mystical performance by INGRET. The atmosphere there was dark, full of smoke. While it was touching enough, I was not convinced and her vocals did not really help.

NAZVA  —  “Slavic English

Quite an ethnic tune from NAZVA. A fun and colorful performance for sure. However, it was not convincing enough with the judges not thinking that “Slavic English” is that suitable for Eurovision, as other contestants’ messages are in greater need to be heard.

ANKA  —  “Palala

Here we have the online wildcard. ANKA is here to win and we are all wondering how she was not in the final line-up at first. The flute is present here as well and the performance was really strong. ANKA is definitely one of the contenders for the Ukrainian representation in Malmö.

Drevo  —  “Endless chain

Not a fan of the song, not a fan of the performance as well. It all seemed quite weird. The concept was not quite it. The add of a rock band instead of the two girls with the guitars would be a better choice.

alyona alyona & Jerry Heil  —  “Teresa & Maria

The big favorites of the night gave us goosebumps. Although, there were some sound problems at the beginning of the performances, the duo seemed to make it. The song has something quite anthemic and will sure stand out on the Eurovision stage. However, the performance definitely needs to be elevated for Malmö.

MÉLOVIN  —  “DREAMER

MÉLOVIN is back to be the first Ukrainian returning artist. Much different, in comparison to his last Eurovision appearance, he dominates the stage. Although there were no back-up dancers, the camera work really elevated the performance. A possible contender for sure.

SKYLERR  —  “Time is running out

A surprise, I would say. It all looks better off stage. The vocals were good, the performance was powerful as well. However, I don’t think it would be enough.

Ziferblat  —  “Place I Call Home

A nice performance overall. However, the song doesn’t seem that suitable for Eurovision!

YAGODY  —  “Tsunamia

The most ethnic performance of the night. It has a powerful folk sound and the performance was intense as well. However, it seemed messy. Nothing more, nothing less.

NAHABA  —  “GLASS

By far the most confusing performance of the night. It didn’t feel unique to me…just horrendous. Nice try with being original, though!

The show, also, included performances of Ruslana, Jamala, Kalush Orchestra, TVORCHI, Verka Serduchka, Tina Karol and Anastasia Dymyd. Just before the announcement of the results, all participants joined Dmytro Shrove, Vidbir’s musical director, on stage.

The voting process

A national jury along with the TV audience vote decided in equal shares who would fly the Ukrainian flag in Malmö.

National Jury

The national jury consisted of the following members:

  1. Andriy Danylko (VERKA SERDUCHKA) – Representative of Ukraine at Eurovision 2007
  2. Jamala – Winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 as well as the “Outstanding Artist Leadership Award” from the Atlantic Council of the United States in 2022
  3. Serhiy Tanchynets – singer, musician, producer and leader of the rock band BEZ LIMITATIONS

The afore-mentioned awarded their points as following:

11 points – ZIFERBLAT

10 points – Alyona Alyona & Jerry Heil

9 points – MELOVIN

8 points – INGRET

7 points – YAGODY

6 points – YAKTAK

5 points – ANKA

4 points – DREVO

3 points – SKYLERR

2 points – NAZVA

1 point – NAHABA

ZIFERBLAT was jury’s pick for Eurovision 2024.

Audience’s vote

A total of 1.167.185 votes were casted via Diia app. The TV audience voted as following:

11 points – Alyona Alyona & Jerry Heil

10 points – YAKTAK

9 points – MELOVIV

8 points – ZIFERBLAT

7 points – YAGODY

6 points – SKYLERR

5 points – NAHABA

4 points – ANKA

3 points – DREVO

2 points – INGRET

1 point – NAZVA

Alyona Alyona & Jerry Heil was public’s pick for Eurovision 2024. Indicatively, they collected approximately 62% of the total votes, namely 723.297 votes.

The winner

Following the combination of the above and with a total of 21 points, Alyona Alyona & Jerry Heil were crowned as the winnerS of Vidbir 2024 and will therefore serve as the country’s representatives in the 68th Eurovision Song Contest that will take place in Malmö in May. Ukraine is allocated to perform at the first half of the first semi-final on May 7.

Ukraine: Vidbir 2024 winner will be announced tomorrow!

The crush of Diia app was due to overload. More than fifteen thousand people per second entered the platform in order to vote for their favorites.

The hosts along with the participants and the judges were transferred to a shelter in order to continue the live broadcast. While, the production team was trying its best to bring back the platform, while the judges along with the participants share their stories.
