Up until now, the German broadcaster has not revealed any of their plans on how they  will pick their next representative. Last year, they returned on a national final while in 2020 and 2021 they held an internal selection.

As we’ve said in a previous article, Germany will most likely hold another national final for Eurovision Song Contest 2023!

In Eurovision 2022, Germany was represented by Malik Harris and the song “Rockstars” and ended up in last place of the Grand Final:

Germany: Ben Dolic declines a new entry in Eurovision!

Ben Dolic, the representative of Germany in Eurovision 2020, posted a statement about Eurovision Song Contest, on his personal Twitter account.

After the cancellation of the 2020 contest, Ben Dolic was one of the few “unlucky” contestants to not be selected, to represent their countries once again in 2021. Since then, many fans want him to return with a new song and finally perform on the Eurovision stage.

His post isn’t that positive on a new participation in the contest, saying that he has now taken a different turn in his career:

This is what Ben Dolic posted:

“Competing in the Eurovision Song Contest was something I had always dreamed of and I am so incredibly grateful for my experience representing Germany in 2020 with ‘Violent Thing’. The ESC community has always been so supportive and although the competition didn’t fully go ahead, I feel that my experience fulfilled my wishes and I look back on my time with fond memories.

Since 2020, I have been establishing my sound and don’t feel that the direction I am moving in is a suitable fit for Eurovision. I want to prioritise myself and my career and I am working on releasing more music as an independent artist. I do not want to completely rule out competing or submitting an entry in the future, as I never know how my sound will change in the long term, but I do want to be respected as an artist in my own right and release music that aligns with my direction.

I am grateful for the Eurofans who have stuck by me since my debut single release and hope I can continue to have their support with future releases, void of rumours or pressure about returning to the competition.”

Ben Dolic was internally selected to represent Germanby in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 with the song “Violent Thing”:

Germany: Will they select their representative for Eurovision 2023 through a national final?

According to the German website ESC Kompakt, Germany will select their representative for the 67th Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool through a national final that will take place next February and will be broadcasted through their national network of local channels, ARD

At least eight songs and 12 at max will take part, while the public vote will have a great significance in the final result, that comes up to 50%

On the other hand, NDR, Germany’s national broadcaster, has not revealed any information on how they are going to select their representative for Eurovision 2023. In 2022 the channel brought back a national final as their method of selection, while in 2020 and 2021 they used internal selections.

In Eurovision 2022, Germany was represented by Malik Harris and the song “Rockstars” and ended up in last place of the Grand Final:

Germany: The country will take a break from Junior Eurovision 2022!

An unusually long time has passed and the German committee for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Yerevan has been silent. When the organizing committee was last asked in June, it was still unclear whether Germany would participate in Junior Eurovision this year. Now the decision has been made. Officials have decided not to take part in Junior Eurovision this year, so Germany will have to wait another year for its third participation in the Junior Song Contest (first participation in 2020 and then in 2021).

The statement of the broadcasters responsible for Germany’s participation, NDR and KiKA, is as follows:

“For the past two years, NDR and KiKA have participated in Junior Eurovision with great dedication and enthusiasm, despite the many adversities related to the coronavirus. This year, in consultation with KiKA, we want to take a creative break. This also applies to the fact that the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued some travel warnings for Armenia. Next year we want to take part in Junior Eurovision again. As usual, Junior Eurovision will be broadcast live from Yerevan on KiKA for all fans.”

After two Junior Eurovision entries with Susan (JESC 2020) and Pauline (JESC 2021), NDR and KiKA decided not to take part in the 2022 contest. The statement “creative break” suggests that the next German entry in Junior Eurovision will be different from the last two times. This could mean, for example, that the selection process for the German act and German song to be revised. There have been a lot of speculations about recreating KiKA’s successful “Dein Song” selection process, however it is very likely that the planning here will take some time. According to the statement, the fact that Germany wants to return to the Competition next year, i.e. 2023, seems to be well planned.

Germany participated in 2021 with the song “Imagine Us” by Pauline:

In addition, the German delegation also referred to the security situation in the host country, Armenia, when they decided to not take  part in the contest. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, when traveling to the country you must observe the following:

“There is currently a travel warning in place across the entire border region with Azerbaijan and the Nagorno-Karabakh region. There are protests all over the country in Armenia, especially in Yerevan. Avoid protests and large crowds of people over a wide area.”

From this point of view, the decision is perhaps understandable (especially in a children’s competition), although this reason played a rather secondary role and the “creative break” was more decisive for this decision.

NDR confirmed that Iveta Mukuchyan was among the candidates, but she wasn’t rejected because of Nagorno Karabah

The announcement of Iveta Mukuchyan, the representative of Armenia in 2016, that she was among the bidding candidates for the German representation, but eventually she was rejected, caused great sensation. NDR spoke to esc-kompakt and confirmed that Iveta was among the artists the panel of 100 experts had chosen. Of course, the reason given by the German public television for the “cut” of Iveta, is that its inclusion in the list of candidates was inadvertent, since they do not want artists who have participated again in the competition with other countries. This contradicts what Iveta claims, since according to her, the reason for its exclusion was its action to raise the flag of the Republic of Artsakh( formerly known as the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh) in the semifinals of Eurovision 2016.

Just yesterday, Iveta Mukuchyan, who successfully represented Armenia at Eurovision 2016 with LoveWave and ended up in seventh place, revealed through her social networks that while she was one of the candidates to represent Germany at Eurovision 2021, NDR finally informed her that it is not possible, as they do not want an artist who has participated in the competition again.

Iveta went even further, saying that she considered this a pretext, as the real reason is her act of raising the flag of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) at Eurovision 2016 and the reactions that would have taken place in Germany from the large Muslim community living there.

Talking to esc-kompakt about the issue, NDR confirmed that Iveta Mukuchyan was one of the artists who chose the 100-member panel of experts to represent Germany at Eurovision 2021, but insisted on what Iveta herself says on her post.

For the selection process, digame and the NDR have agreed that Germany should not be represented at the ESC by artists who have already participated in the international competition for another country. Iveta Mukuchyan was mistakenly included in the first selection for 2021 and contacted by digame. With the sole reason that she had already participated in the ESC for Armenia, she was then canceled by digame for the further course of the selection. There was no other reason or a separate agreement with the NDR. Political statements didn’t matter.

What is certain is that we will not see Iveta in the next competition, at least for Germany. But let us once again enjoy LoveWave and its stunning performance at the Globen Arena in Stockholm:

Germany: New Head of Delegation

A series of changes to the country chiefs of Delegations in the Eurovision Song Contest, with Germany taking the lead. The country’s public broadcaster journalist Alexandra Wolfslast has been in charge of the German delegation since December 1st.

Alexandra Wolfslast will succeed Christoph Pellander, who has quit his job on German public television. Pellander was Germany’s head of delegation in the last two contests, leading his country to a fourth and one penultimate position.

For 2020,Germany trusted the production company Digame to find the right song, but also the performer who will feel the competition and be higher on the scoreboard than  S! Sters in Tel Aviv.

So far there has been no public announcement on the evolution of the option, although a concept similar to the one used by Switzerland this year is expected to be used. A closed choice, that is, with the only announcement of the winner.
