Spain: Will Tanxugueiras perform on stage, at Benidorm Fest?

After Luna Ki, that has withdrawn from Benidorm Fest, another act is in danger of not being able to perform live on stage, at Benidorm Fest, due to Aida and Olaia getting infected by COVID-19.

As the group has already Tweeted a few minutes ago and as some members of their team is already at Benidorm, Aida and Olaia will travel within the next few days, as a precaution.

But how is it going to work with Tanxugueiras at this year’s Spanish national final, but also for any other contestant that might also get infected by COVID-19?

The three scenarios

Three different scenarios have been announced in case an artist tests positive for COVID-19 at Benidorm Fest.

In a recent article, RTVE unveiled the contingency plan in case a competing artist turns out positive before appearing in the upcoming Spanish selection process Benidorm Fest.

The producers, Boomerang TV and the broadcaster, RTVE, have come up with three different scenarios to ensure that every song and artist will be able to compete in this year’s Benidorm Fest.

  • The first scenario is that if the artist has already completed his first rehearsal, it will be broadcast during the live show instead of a live performance.
  • Second, if the artist comes out positive before his first rehearsal, then the official music video for the song will be played.
  • The final scenario is that, if there is no music video, the song will be played with montage of images and photos of the artist.

It was announced by Eva Mora, head of the Spanish delegation, that it was not possible to produce live performances, such as those created for this year’s ESCZ selection process and the expected process of Northern Macedonia, due to lack of time.

The Benidorm Fest will be held with two semifinals on January 26 and 27, leading to the Grand Final on January 29. The songs and the artists have been revealed and the order of the two semifinals has also been decided and announced.

The voting system

Only eight artists will make it to the grand final of the Benidorm Fest. The result will be done through a mixed voting system between a professional jury (national and international), televoting and a poll jury:

  • 50% of the grade will correspond to the professional jury consisting of five experts (three of Spanish nationality and two, international).
  • The remaining 50% will be in the hands of the public (where 25% will be by phone and SMS and the remaining 25% will be selected by a poll jury).
  • The artists will be given a phone number and as soon as everyone completes the show, the hotlines will be open for voting. The voting period will be approximately 15 or 20 minutes and the presenters, Alaska, Inés Hernand and Máximo Huerta, will be responsible for the announcement.

Spain 2021: Benidorm Song Festival returns as national final

Spanish broadcaster RTVE announced the revival of the Benidorm Song Festival.  The historical music festival took place in the city of Benidorm from 1959 until its last edition in 2006.  Moreover, the new Benidorm Song Festival will be the Spanish national selection for Eurovision.

The revamped contest will take place in February, 2022.  Three main shows will make the festival: two semi-finals and a grand final.  RTVE will broadcast the show via La 1 and RTVE Play.  More details will be available soon.  However, we already know that a split jury/public vote will decide who will represent Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022.

RTVE president José Manuel Pérez Tornero; the president of the Valencian Government, Ximo Puig; and the mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez announced the news in front of the beach.  In addition to this, Ruth Lorenzo performed for the audience her 2014 entry Dancing In The Rain and Waterloo.

We want Benidorm to be a meeting point for what we need most now: music, Europe and diversity. With the ‘Benidorm Festival’ we intend to achieve an emotional and tourist reactivation of the Valencian Community.’

The Benidorm International Song Festival took place from 1959 to 2006.  The contest was modeled after the Italian Sanremo Music Festival.  The winner of the Benidorm Festival received the Golden Mermaid Trophy.  RTVE used to broadcast the event.  Further, RVTE President José Manuel Pérez Tornero said that the Spanish broadcaster would take their participation “very seriously”.

Spain’s last results on Eurovision have been far from satisfactory, being outside of the top 20 since 2015.  In addition to this, their best achievements in recent times have been two top 10s in 2014 and 2012.  Spain came in the top 5 for the last time in 1995 with Anabel Conde who ended in second place.

Hopefully their new national selection process will help Spain make a turning point on Eurovision.

Spain: With Blas Canto at Eurovision 2021

Announcement continuation for Eurovision 2021 Delegations!

“The changing conditions occurring both in the Netherlands and in the other 41 participating countries have made it impossible to ensure the protection of all persons involved in this celebration.

RTVE thanks our representative, Blas Cantó, for his commitment and for the work done to represent Spain at Eurovision 2020 and invites him to become a Spanish candidate in 2021.

RTVE will, as always, return to the competition, the largest music television show that annually attracts 200 million viewers from around the world when the situation is resolved”.

Blas,however, responded to RTVE’s proposal, saying that he would gladly continue the cooperation by taking part in 2021.

“I’m so sorry for that. A great job behind an incredible team for many months of work, not only in my candidacy, but globally, but I think it’s right … There are countries that are now starting the epidemic and it is not known when it will be able to stop.

There is a commitment on my part to continue working for our candidacy in 2021 and I am very pleased to have the opportunity to do so next year. There are things we need to do. We are going to get Eurovision in style, it will be my flag and we have time to do it so that we have a good performance in 2021.

All I want is for people to be together and stay home so that the pandemic can stop as soon as possible. Health comes first. We need to give priority to us. Because without us there is no festival. Doing it without the public was not crazy, because Eurovision is the world. Without them there is nothing. It was important to do it right because Eurovision is worth giving it its importance.

EBU: The Catalan broadcaster application to enter EBU was rejected

TV3’s request to become a member of EBU was rejected. The local broadcaster had applied for membership in order to be able to participate in the European Song Contest as an independent broadcaster.

In a letter from the CCMA (Catalonian Corporation of Visual Media) to EBU Vice President Núria Llorach i Boladeras, was declared:

“As you know, the Board of Directors of May 2018 (as decided by the EBU General Assembly in June 2018) concluded that the CCMA does not meet the requirements to become a member of the EBU, since it is not neither a member of the International Telecommunication Union nor a member of the Council of Europe as defined in Article 3.3 of the EBU. The CCMA is a local Spanish broadcaster, failing to comply with Article 3.4, in relation to the “national character and importance” of the EBU Statute “

In its request, the Catalan broadcaster cites several reasons to be taken into account, including references to other broadcasters, such as RTBF (the Belgian-speaking broadcaster) and S4C (the UK-based broadcaster), in which the EBU replied:

“When a country has two or more linguistic areas, the EBU Regulation on detailed eligibility criteria refers to each region separately. The ARD in Germany, the SRG SSR in Switzerland, the VRT and RTBF in Belgium and the S4C in Wales support the territorial characteristics of their respective countries and all comply with the principles stated by the EBU “

EBU also added a number of arguments for each of the members mentioned and provided additional information on the political structure of Spain. In essence, Spain’s administrative division, which is not structured as federations / confederations, blocks the entry of the CCMA into the EBU.

 

Junior Eurovision 2019: What are the favorites to win?

Only some hours  left for the Junior Eurovision 2019 final. Tomorrow, November 24 in Glivice, Poland, 19 songs will compete for the victory. After defining the order of appearance of the songs, it’s time to take a look at the big favorites.

The final result of Junior Eurovision will also be determined this year by a 50% vote of the jury and 50% of the public vote. The public can continuing voting online till tomorrow at 15:59 CET time. Of the 19 songs the following 4 seem to have stood out:

  • Poland

Last year’s winner and host of this year’s Junior Eurovision has already garnered many views. The official video has 3.8 million views, and the first rehearsal video is already close to 200,000. The singer’s official channel reaches 1.3 million and TVP’s channel reaches 1.4 million! It is expected that there will be great interest in Poland for the contest, but it is a strong song anyway. If that is supported by the jury, it is possible to see a second victory in a row for Poland. In audience voting, it will probably be in the top three if not first.

  • France

The country that returned dynamically last year after winning the runner-up looks determined to continue the good run. The video on the singer’s official channel reached 1.3 million views, while JESC’s official channel is approaching 1 million. The first rehearsal also became quite popular with 120,000 views. France has not won the competition so far.

  • Spain

Spain have been abstaining from the competition for many years, but it seems that it wants to return dynamically this year. The video on the singer’s channel has 700,000 views, while the official JESC channel also reaches close to 700,000. The first rehearsal seems to stand out with nearly 120,000 views already. After Spain’s 2004 win, could we see its second win this year?

  • Armenia

With an uptempo song, Armenia reached 900,000 views on the official JESC channel, while its first rehearsal also went well with 80,000 views. After winning 2010, the country has been close to winning several times.

Who will the winner be?

The above countries are almost certain to be in the top ten (possibly in the top five) of the public vote. The unexpected factor is the vote of the jury. Bearing in mind the results of the last two years that the system has been the same this year, it seems that the committees pay great attention to the vocal abilities of the singers as well as to the final visual spectacle.

Spain: Blas Cantó to sing in Spanish at Eurovision 2020?

Blas Cantó is one of the first singers to be announced for the Eurovision 2020 in Rotterdam. RTVE, Spain’s public broadcaster, for the first time after 2015 selects its representative with direct assignment.

In an interview on the Europa Press website, the 28-year-old artist revealed some early information about the song he is about to perform in the Ahoy arena. Specifically, he stated:

“An attempt is made to interpret the song in English, as this will enable Europe to understand me. However, it is not necessary for people to understand what I am singing. The music is universal”

Still,he continues:

“I don’t want to sing a ballad but not to have a party on stage. On stage, I probably won’t be alone, but I’ll have someone with me. It all depends on the song we will choose”

Blas Cantó is 28 years old and has become known in Spain as a member of boyband Auryn. He is considered one of the most popular artists of his generation and his selection is certainly a pleasant surprise, as Spain has not accustomed us to select artists. It is not the first time it has been associated with the contest, having participated in the Spanish national final for Junior Eurovision in 2004, and in 2011 tried his luck at the national final for regular Eurovision with Auryn.

Spain: EsPreParty Madrid is coming for the fourth year

According to the “Eurovision Spain” website, EsPreParty Madrid, one of the Eurovision’s biggest Pre-Party, will take place in La Riviera, Madrid on April 10 and 11, 2020.

Over 20 contestants will travel to Spain to celebrate Eurovision 2020 shortly before rehearsals. Of course, many old Eurostars will not be missing from the party.

Ticket information will be provided in the coming days. The two nights will be followed by two more parties with 2000 people.

In the 4 years of EsPreParty Madrid more than 100 artists have been in Madrid to celebrate the arrival of Eurovision and many more are expected this year.

Spain: Blas Cantó will represent the country at Eurovision 2020

Without waiting, Spain’s public broadcaster RTVE announced its representative for Eurovision 2020. This is Blas Cantó, who was selected by direct assignment to compete  in May in Rotterdam.

RTVE, after two years in which the Spanish representative emerged through the talent show “Operacion Triunfo”, decided to revise its strategy, hoping to break away from the last rankings.

Thus, for the first time after 2015, Spain chooses its representative in the contest by direct assignment. The announcement of Spanish public television really came out of nowhere, as no one expected it to happen so soon. The song with which it will participate will be announced at a later date.

Junior Eurovision 2019: Listen to Melani García’s “Marte” for Spain

Recently, Spanish television, RTVE, released the song that will represent the country at the upcoming Junior Eurovision event in the city of Glivice, Poland, this November.

The song is called Morte, which in English is the planet Mars, and refers to climate change and global warming, a key issue for the entire humanity.

Spain in Junior Eurovision

Spain was one of the 16 countries participating in the first Junior Eurovision competition in 2003.

In her short stint in the contest, it won one first, two second and a fourth place. 2006 was her last participation. Nevertheless, the interest of the people in the competition was high despite the absence of the country. In 2019, after 13 whole years, Spanish public television decided to return to the competition.

Antes muerta que sencilla, the song that Maria Isabel won for Spain in 2004, is still considered the most commercial winning song in the history of children’s Eurovision.
