Eurovision 2023: EBU-Ukraine talks begin on Friday!

Eurovision 2022 may have gone down in history a few days ago, but that does not mean that discussions about the upcoming competition have not already begun.

With no time to lose and in such an uncertain environment as the one prevailing in Ukraine, the winners of the competition and the EBU start discussions on Friday to host Eurovision 2023. This revelation was made by the President of the Ukrainian public broadcaster, Mykola Chernotytskyi, who expressed his wish that the 67th Eurovision Song Contest will take place in a “peaceful Ukraine”.

The upcoming talks that will start on Friday between the two sides will focus on the financial part and the infrastructure needed for the normal hosting of Eurovision 2023 in Ukraine next May. In addition to funding and infrastructure, security issues will be paramount in the Suspilne-EBU talks. Ensuring the safety of all involved is the biggest “thorn” in the given time for the next contest on Ukrainian territory.

We remind you that the Ukrainian public broadcaster has already received the necessary documents for hosting Eurovision 2023 since Saturday night.

Nevertheless, as can be seen from the statements of both Chernotyskyi and Skybinska, both are aware of the difficulty of the project, stressing that the final decision on whether or not to hold the 67th Eurovision Song Contest in Ukraine will be taken jointly with the EBU.

Kalush Orchestra emerged as the big winners of Eurovision 2022 last Saturday in Turin, collecting 631 points. The folk-rap band thus gave Ukraine its third victory in the contest, after 2004 and 2016.

Netherlands: Willing to cooperate in order to organize Eurovision 2023!

With Ukraine’s victory during last Saturday’s Grand Final still fresh in our minds, many wonder what Kalush Orchestra’s win would mean for next year’s Eurovision. Soon after the Grand Final, the EBU released a statement saying that they will begin planning Eurovision 2023 with the winning broadcaster UA:PBC.

Of course, due to the ongoing war in Ukraine after being invaded by Russia, unique challenges will lie ahead in organizing a safe and free event for all. In the unfortunate case Ukraine won’t be able to host Eurovision in their own country next year, the EBU will look for another possible host country. The Spanish broadcaster RTVE has already confirmed they would be prepared to host Eurovision and support Ukraine regarding the organization.

According to Sietse Bakker, executive producer of the Eurovision Song Contest, while speaking with EditieNL, it would make sense for the EBU to look at possible host countries that have had the honor of hosting recently in the past. Since the Netherlands only hosted the contest last year in Rotterdam, they are known to be up for the task of hosting such a big event like Eurovision.

Dutch broadcasters AVROTROS and NPO have commented on this news as well, saying that it is too early to say anything about a possible new edition in the Netherlands. If the EBU approaches them to organize the event once again, they will take that into consideration with all involved parties.

Netherlands: Song submissions open for Eurovision 2023

AVROTROS has commenced its search for the Netherlands entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023.

The Netherlands has today opened the song submissions window for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023, as the Netherlands looks for its next entry. The Dutch entry will once again be selected by a selection committee, the same method the Netherlands has used since 2014. AVROTROS is looking for:

“An entry with preferably a contemporary, but in any case authentic sound. A song that is able to survive in a competition. By a Dutch artist who can and wants to present a personal song in a distinctive way, in any genre, and if possible a personal story.”

The rules that submissions must meet are:

  • The song is convincingly distinctive and meets the above description
  • A maximum of three songs can be submitted
  • The song cannot have been commercially released before 1 September 2022
  • The song cannot exceed 3 minutes in length

To submit your song to the Dutch selection process email: songfestival@avrotros.nl. The last day for songs to be submitted to AVROTROS is August 31.

United Kingdom: BBC and TaP reject Years & Years in favour of Sam Ryder!

It has been reported in the British media that the band  Years & Years  were rejected by the BBC and TaP Music for Eurovision 2022, in favor of Sam Ryder .

The Mail on Sunday reports that Olly Alexander , now the sole permanent member of the popular electro-pop project Years & Years, proposed himself to represent the United Kingdom in Turin, but was unable to do so due to his contract with Polydor and the requirement for the selected artist to be a member of TaP Music.

The Mail article says, the only reassuring thing is that Olly has been told that he has a good chance of being selected if he puts his name forward next year if the rules change.

Olly made some tweets for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, so he’s clearly a fan and would certainly be a popular and credible choice for the 2023 contest if he were to be selected successfully.

Sam Ryder was selected in February to represent the United Kingdom at Eurovision 2022 with “Space Man” .

The United Kingdom finished second in the grand final this year with 466 points. Making it the country’s highest score in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Austria: ORF will decide their selection method for Eurovision 2023 during June!

A few days after Austria’s non-qualification with Lumix and Pia Maria at Eurovision 2022, the head of the Austrian delegation, Stefan Zecher spoke about the possible ways of selecting the Austrian entry from Eurovision 2023 and on!

The head of the Austrian delegation from 2011, Stefan Zechner said:

The disappointment is huge, of course, because it’s the third time in a row that we haven’t reached the final. We just have to analyze how it is possible that a song that has done extremely well on YouTube and Spotify doesn’t get enough votes to make it to the final.

When asked why other countries always have a guaranteed ticket to the final while Austria always has to “fight”, he gave the following answer:

Countries like Sweden, for example, which usually always reach the final, are more positive about the competition. In Italy, the country’s best-known artists try to take part in Eurovision. In our country, on the other hand, people continue mocking Eurovision, even though the quality of the music has clearly improved.

When asked if the country’s representative could be chosen from a music show like Starmania, Zechner said:

This could be one of the many possibilities. “Starmania” could be won by someone who wouldn’t actually be suitable for Eurovision. If, on the other hand, we have our own national final, there’s the problem of finding artists who are willing to be exposed to the antagonism. Many established musicians don’t want to do that.

Right now we have a new program director, Stefanie Groiss-Horowitz. We will jointly consider how to approach the Song Contest. I think we need to ask ourselves what needs to change, what new approaches there are.

A decision on our selection method should be made in June, because if a new system is implemented, we will have to prepare it during the summer.

Lumix and Pia Maria represented Austria at Eurovision 2022 with “Halo”, you can watch their performance from the first semi-final here:

Belgium: With a national final at Eurovision 2023?

According to weekly magazine TV Familie, there are rumors going on about a possible return of Eurosong, the Flemish Song Contest preliminary round for Eurovision Song Contest .  In a response to Songfestival.be, the public broadcaster stated that it wants to focus on entertainment and relaxation, but that nothing concrete can be announced yet about the selection of the VRT candidate for the Songfestival 2023.

The same source stated that the Flemish public broadcaster VRT is considering reselecting the 2023 Belgian representative  entry via Eurosong. The presenter has apparently already been chosen, and it’s Niels Destadsbader, who switched from VTM to VRT, would be ready to present a new edition of the preselection in 2023. He has recently been under contract with VRT and would present several live shows there.

The public broadcaster neither accept or deny the rumours about the comeback of Eurosong for Eurovision 2023!

“Each edition we look at the best way to select our candidate for the Eurovision Song Contest. This has already happened via pre-selections, via a TV show and via an internal selection.  At the moment we cannot announce anything concrete about the selection for our VRT candidate for the Eurovision Song Contest, but of course we will share news about this later.”

The Eurosong preliminary round was last used as a selection method in 2016. Peter Van de Veire, who has been the face of VRT for Eurovision for many years, presented those shows at the time. Van de Veire is in favor of selecting our Belgian candidate without a preliminary round. According to TV Familie, he would not return as the presenter of Eurosong 2023 after his retirement from MNM.

In 2016, Belgium was represented by Laura Tesoro and “What’s the Pressure”. She advanced on the Grand Final and she finished 10th with 181 points.

This year, Belgium will be represented by Jérémie Makiese with “Miss You” and we will compete on the 16th place of the Second Semi Final of Eurovision 2022!

Greece: Will we see Good Job Nicky at Eurovision 2023?

It was for many the favorite to represent Greece in this year’s Eurovision song contest. Good Job Nicky, although he failed to get the coveted ticket to Turin with the song Heaven Is Sin, and while earlier in his statements he was negative in a new attempt to be on the Eurovision stage, he seems to be thinking about it…

Shortly after ERT announced that Amanda Georgiadi would represent Greece at Eurovision 2022, Good Job Nicky in an interview with Eleni Menegaki had stated that he would probably not be interested in a new participation.

However, in a conversation he had with Eurovisionfun and after our encouragement to try in the future, Good Job Nicky, although laconic, now seems to leave several chances in another attempt:

Eurovisionfun: We hope you try it again because you deserve the Eurovision opportunity too!

Good Job Nicky: I guess we’ll see…

Eurovisionfun: We want it!

Good Job Nicky: I appreciate it unimaginably, really!

Good Job Nicky expressed his warmest comments for our representative Amanda Georgiadi, saying that the opportunity now belongs to her, while he also supports her!

I’m rooting for Amanda! Above all, it is important for our country to do well. Let’s tear up!

Amanda responded to Good Job Nicky’s statements with a tweet, while she told us that he is an amazing artist:

Listen to Heaven Is Sin, which was the proposal of Good Job Nicky and Cobalt Music for Eurovision 2022:

Israel: Eurovision 2023 participation confirmed!

Israel confirmed its participation in Eurovision Song Contest 2023 and is searching for a national final format.

KAN published a tender searching for the Israeli national selection for Eurovision 2023. By launching the tender for its national final, Israel confirmed its participation for Eurovision 2023, alongside San Marino and Cyprus for which it is already known that the will compete in the contest

The Israeli public broadcaster is looking for proposals from other broadcasters of the country, to collaborate for the national final. The proposed television show would select the Israeli representative and must be a show that has been produced or broadcasted in Israel or internationally.

The tender process follows the same process as was previously used to determine the Israeli selection between 2015 and 2021. From 2015 to 2020 the Israeli representative was selected using “Rising Star”, while “The X Factor Israel” was utilised in 2021.
