Eurovision 2023: The betting odds for the Semi-Finals!

After the official release of all 37 entries for Eurovision 2023, betting companies have opened for both semi-finals and the chances of qualifying for this year’s event!

For a long time now, through Eurovisionfun we have been informing you about the betting analysis for the 67th Eurovision Song Contest, through your favorite column that will continue until the night of the grand final for 2023!

First Semifinal

The first and for many the most difficult semi-final, shows the clear lead of Scandinavia with an absolute probability of qualification, which exceeds 90%! The Netherlands and Croatia seem to have marginal qualification for the first semi-final, with Portugal, being a breath away from them. Unfortunately, in the last place of the betting companies seems to be Ireland with only a 19% chance of qualifying.

Second Semi-Final

The second semi-final, which for many is characterized as the easiest for this year’s competition, may be the one that will hide the most surprises! At the top for qualification from the second semi-final we see Austria, Armenia and Georgia with more than 80% chances of qualification. Belgium seems to have marginal qualification, as its odds are very close to those of Poland, which is currently in 11th place. In the last places, without being a particular surprise, we find San Marino and Romania with 25% and 24% chances of qualifying respectively.

The Netherlands:Commentator Cornald Maas is hesitant towards a national final possibility

The experienced Dutch commentator of Eurovision, Cornald Maas, voiced on Twitter his negative attitude towards the possibility of hosting a national final for the selection of the future representatives of the Netherlands.

In response to Dutch sociologist Sjors Joosten’s article, published in NRC Handelsblad, arguing that the Netherlands should follow Sweden’s example and organize a Melodifestivalen-style national final, Cornald Maas stated:

Hear hear? I would say: think think. Leaving out the upcoming competition: All (Dutch) national finals since 2004 have resulted in only a single qualification to the final. From 2013 onwards (internal selection), we are always in the final. Or maybe you just want an orange national celebration?

In a subsequent tweet, after having being asked why the selection method is not democratic anymore,he commented the following:

It doesn’t work at the moment if we want to guarantee quality. The music industry is not willing to participate in a national final in the Netherlands, unlike in Sweden. Even “in the background”, big/good names with good songs do not want to compete here, as it has been proven more than once.

In spite of the fact that holding a Dutch national final does not seem likely in the near future, Cornald Maas did not rule out seeking for alternative, more democratic selection processes such as plebiscites.

The Netherlands is a country that has established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the competition, with a considerable amount of remarkable entries that gave them various top-10 placements, including a 9th, a 2nd and even a top position in the scoreboard ever since the reintroduction of the internal selection process.

The Greek cooperating broadcaster ERT may find themselves at the crossroads between the internal selection and the national final on account of the fact that ever since the implementation of a selection process similar to the Dutch one (submission of proposals by interested artists and selection by an artistic committee), they have returned to the final (2019) and to the top 10 subsequently (2021,2022).

Do you think a Melodifestivalen type national final could be successfully held in Greece? Would it capture the interest of well-known/respectable artists and record companies? Would the Greek public make the right choice?

France: the first details for La Zarra’s performance are revealed!

The first details about La Zarra’s performance in Liverpool have been revealed.  The Head of the French Delegation, Alexandra Redde-Amiel has spoken to the  podcast “12 Points – le Podcast qui décrypte l’Eurovision“ about La Zarra’s preparations for Eurovision and what we can expect to happen in May.

Here are some of the most important details we already know about it:

The Stage

According to the French head of delegation, La Zarra is having the last say when it comes to deciding what should be on stage or not.  France Télevisions is working with the singer to decide what to show in Liverpool.  However, during the creative process La Zarra gives her feedback on the ideas and what she wants to see.

A second revelation is that “there will be a cool prop” that will be in the center of the performance.  Another important revelation is that La Zarra will perform alone onstage.  According to Ms. Redde-Amiel the performance will not need a lot of people around La Zarra.  The main goal is to make the French representative stand out:

“I wanted something that was both a fashion and out of the box at the same time because that is her. She can be like Lady Gaga one moment and do something very simple the next.”

During the interview with the French head of delegation, there was time to address the elephant in the room: Sweden.  As most of the fans already know,  Sweden is the clear favourite according to the odds.  “Team France” has discussed their main competitor.  However, they feel confident that what we will see in Liverpool for La Zarra has enough potential to get the Eurovision crystal trophy in spite of the current odds.

“We are going to take a counter-stance which could be nice”.

Eurovision 2023: The latest developments for the Ukrainian elements in the contest!

The Ukrainian Creative Director for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, German Nenov, made a statement on social media and informed us about the progress on creating the presentations that will complement the evenings beyond the competition part in Liverpool.

Specifically he noted that:

Last night, we finalized the musical form of one of the performances that will be implemented as part of Ukraine’s integration into the Eurovision song contest.

I listened to this form about ten times, and I got goosebumps and filled with pride for Ukraine and our Ukrainian culture. There is very little time left before the Eurovision, and every day the image of Ukraine, which I have been building in my head since the very beginning, becomes brighter and brighter.

Every day, I feel more and more responsible for the fact that, at this turning point in history, I am entrusted with the honor of being the creative director for Ukraine at such an important event for the world of music. And at the same time, every day I am more and more confident that everything we plan will come true. After all, we invited the best artists and the best specialists to bring to life all the touches of this image.
Everything will be Ukraine.

Eurovision 2023: Sweden comfortably at the top!

The favorite column of many of you is back as the betting breakdowns for the 67th Eurovision Song Contest are here again.

With the puzzle of 37 songs taking part in Eurovision 2023 complete, we take a look at the bookmakers’ odds of each country winning this year’s contest.

In any case, these odds reflect trends and are based on what we know so far about each country’s participation.

Top 5

“Hurricane” Loreen seems to have come to “sweep” everything for the second time in the Eurovision Song Contest. Eleven years after her triumph in Baku, the experienced performer is seen as the big favorite to win Eurovision 2023. It is therefore no coincidence that the bookies are offering the – historic – seventh Swedish victory at odds below 2. In fact, Sweden’s victory is played at odds between 1.80 and 1.86.

Finland has “climbed” to second place after our last analysis. The huge success of Käärijä and “Cha Cha Cha” has piqued the interest of bookmakers who believe that the Scandinavian country has enough chances for an excellent result at Eurovision 2023. A Finnish win is being played at odds between 4 and 6, following Sweden.

Ukraine has fallen to third place. Ukraine‘s back-to-back victory is no longer considered as likely as it was a few weeks ago, with the odds constantly rising. It is characteristic that at the given time the victory of the Eastern European country can “return” up to 7.5 times the money of the one who will bet on it.

Norway remains in fourth place, but the difference from the Top 3 has grown considerably compared to a few weeks earlier. Alessandra and the ‘Queen of Kings‘ have been fan favourites, with bookies tipping the Norwegian as fourth favorite to win in Liverpool. Norwegian victory is played between 12 and 19.

Israel completes the top five. The explosive Noa Kirel and “Unicorn” have moved up to fifth place after the release of the Israeli entry, but still a long way from fourth place. Israel’s victory is played between 13 and 34.

Top 10

Very close to Israel are the sixth Spain and the seventh Czechia. As for Spain, the atmospheric “Eaea” has been gradually rising in recent weeks, with some companies already offering it in the Top 5. Nevertheless, the odds for the Spanish victory have “raised” and now a Blanca Paloma victory is played in odds between 20 and 34.

Seventh is Czechia. Vesna maintains positive momentum after its selection, but nevertheless has gradually lost ground over the past few weeks. The highest return that can be played the Czech Republic win returns 36 times the stake.

The UK are in eighth place, with Mae Muller‘s participation unimpressive with bookies who have discounted the UK’s chances of a home win. The British win can be played at odds that return up to 40 times the stake.

In ninth place we find another country from the Big-5, France. “Évidemment” and La Zarra return to the top ten after a few weeks, taking advantage of the fact that several of the last songs released did not impress. Possible victory of France is played at odds between 26 and 51.

Finally, the Top 10 is completed by Austria, which is the “pleasant surprise” of the last few weeks. The Central European country has seen the biggest rise in recent weeks, moving from 26th place a few weeks ago to 10th place. Teya & Salina with the wacky “Who the hell is Edgar?” are played at odds between 26 and 55.
