Italy: RAI revails further details regarding Sanremo 2024 regulation!

Following yesterday’s announcement by Amadeus regarding the changes coming to Sanremo 2024, broadcaster RAI has made further revelations about the festival’s regulation for 2024.

First and foremost, it has been confirmed that the winner of Sanremo will once again represent Italy at Eurovision 2024.

Regarding the voting, it has been clarified that in determining the five contestants who will advance to the superfinal (i.e. the second phase of the final from which the winner emerges), the combined votes of the Radio Jury and the Press Jury will hold greater influence than the Televote alone, as follows:

Finally, it was announced that song submissions close on November 27th and that Amadeus will announce the participants after December 1st.

Italy: Amadeus announces changes to Sanremo 2024 rules and structure!

Some announcements were made by Amadeus earlier today on Tg1 regarding the new structure and rules of the next Festival di Sanremo.

  • The first change has to do with the way the artists will be divided between the first three nights of the festival. Specifically, on the first night all the participating artists will step on stage for the first performance of their songs, while half of them will appear for their second performance on the second night and the other half on the third night. Therefore, we will have the opportunity to hear all 26 participating entries as early as the very first night.
  • The second change is about the new role of participating artists as co-hosts as well! On the second and third night, during which the artists will be separated as explained above, the half of the artists who will not perform their songs will undertake the role of presenting the other half artists alongside Amadeus. The pairing of the artists-performers and the artists-“presenters” will be decided by public draw during the press conferences of each previous day.
  • The third change concerns covers night. While in previous years artists could choose to cover a song published up to a certain decade, their choice has now been widened to include songs, from the Italian and international repertoire, published up to 2023.
  • The fourth change sees the replacement of the ever-present demoscopic jury by a new radio jury in the voting procedures, which will include national and local radio stations selected with the criterion of adequately representing the entire Italian territory. The factors that will determine the results, along with the radio jury (second, third, fourth night & superfinal) are completed by the well-known jury of journalists (first, fourth night & superfinal) and the also known televoting (second, third, fourth night & both phases of the voting in the final)

As for the number of participating artists, Amadeus announced that they will be 26, 23 of whom will be selected by him and the remaining three of whom will come from Sanremo Giovani, taking place on the 20th of December.

Sanremo 2024 will take place from 6 to 10 February.

Italy: Changes for Sanremo 2024 rules!

The artistic director for the Festival di Sanremo announced incoming changes for the 2024 edition of the festival.  This will be the last year for Amadeus in this position.

During RAI’s TG1 Mattina Estate, Amadeus announced that we will see changes in the rules that will affect the setup of the shows.  However, as the rules have to be approved by RAI, the artistic director did not go into details about the specific changes we will see next year.  In the same interview he talked about the preparations that are already going on for the 2024 edition of the Festival di Sanremo and here are some of the major developments:

Stage design

Amadeus is working on the scenography of Sanremo 2024.  Once again he is working with Gaetano Castelli and his daughter Maria Chiara Castelli

Song Selection

Amadeus mentioned that he is already working in the selection process of the competing songs.  During his interview, he mentioned that the 2024 edition of the Festival has already received hundreds of song proposals.  The selection process will go around this summer.  Amadeus stressed out that it is very important for him that the competing songs are contemporary:

It is unthinkable that the songs of Sanremo are not in the top 10 in the charts after a week

Italy: Amadeus announced his withdrawal from the Festival of Sanremo!

Amadeus announced his retirement from the position of presenter and artistic director of the Sanremo festival. Sanremo 2024 will be the fifth and final festival run by the popular Italian TV presenter.

Since 2020, Amadeus has been leading the Sanremo festival, so to speak, with admittedly spectacular results, since during his days Sanremo reached huge ratings, while Maneskin in 2021 also managed to win the Eurovision contest.

I say it officially: this is my last Festival. Five in a row is a lot. I am honored to have drawn Pippo Baudo and Mike Bongiorno. If in a few years they asked me I could go back, yes in the future but now I have to stop.

Amadeus has revealed that it has no problem with the new CEO of RAI, appointed by the government of G. Meloni. He has not decided who will be his co-presenters at the 74th Sanremo Festival, while for the candidate songs he will start their search in the coming months, after the scenography has been completed.

In the interview that Amadeus gave, he also describes the way of choosing the songs that participate in the festival every year, saying that he always asks the artists more than one song to choose. He doesn’t make it clear whether in 2024 we’ll have 28 songs or less, saying that it’s always the songs and their level that determine the final number.

Italy: Changes to Sanremo 2024 imposed by government? │ Possible participants and rejections

It’s been months now that Festival di Sanremo 2024 has been taking up italian media, which convey that key components of the Festival are in the process of being redefined, following suggestions by the current Italian government for changes to the programs of the national channel RAI.

The involvement of the Italian government in the procedures and possibly the participants of the 2024 Festival has resulted in reactions by many artists, who are expected to reject a possible participation in the Festival as a sign of protest. Thus, Italian media report that the chances of seeing artists such as Achille Lauro, Fedez, Rosa Chemical and Marracash are minimal. Elodie and Antonello Venditti are also added to this list and aren’t expected, neither as participants nor as presenters.

Italian media, however, have also predicted some names that would possibly be positive to a participation in the Festival. The biggest of these names is the legendary Al Bano. Next up are Giuseppe Povia, a possible father-son duet by Gigi D’Alessio and LDA, Rita Pavone, Enrico Ruggieri, as well as winners of the Festival and Italy’s representatives in Eurovision 2015 Il Volo.

In addition to the above, Italian media are reporting that Amadeus’s position as artistic director and presenter of the Festival is in danger, despite his renewed contract. At the same time, the rest of the cast of presenters is also unclear.

The winner of this year’s much-discussed Sanremo Festival was Marco Mengoni with his song Due Vite, with which he even managed to get Italy the 4th place in Eurovision 2023.

Italy: Marco Mengoni is the winner of Sanremo 2023!

The 73rd Festival di Sanremo has come to an end, crowning Marco Mengoni winner with the song Due Vite.

Amadeus, along with Gianni Morandi and Chiara Ferragni, were tonight’s presenters. There were also a lot of guest appearances, including a message from Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and a performance by Depeche Mode.

During the first phase of the final we listened to all 28 songs again for the third time and, after a 100% televoting which was added to the rankings of the previous nights, the first 5 songs qualified to the next phase: the super final, in which voting restarted from zero, not taking into consideration any of the previous voting procedures of the whole week. In the super final, everyone had a say: televoting by 34%, demoscopic jury by 33% and jury of journalists also by 33%.
