American Song Contest: The premiere of the competition has been postponed to March 21!

The American television network NBC changed its program in the middle of the season, pushing back the premiere of the American Eurovision song contest in a month, from the previously announced Monday, February 21 (8-10 pm) on March 21. The show America’s Got Talent: Extreme, which made headlines last fall when a contestant was badly hurt in an on-set accident.

According to sources, the decision to delay the American Song Contest is made due to concerns about Covid-19 concerns amid the current Omicron surge as the series consists of live shows whose logistics could be difficult in the current wave of rampant infections nationwide.

The new date for the final of the first American Song Contest  seems to be on Monday May 9th, after the semifinals that will last eight weeks.

Behind the American Song Contest are American and Swedish producers – including, as we know, Christer Björkman, who successfully produced Melodifestivalen in Sweden for a long time until 2021. Entries from all the 50 States, Washington D.C., and the 5 Territories will be allocated into three qualifying rounds. The qualifiers will then proceed into the semi-finals and lastly those who will manage to get into the Grand Final will have to compete for the people’s vote to be crowned as the “Best Original Song” of America.

‘American Song Contest’ is executive produced by Audrey Morrissey, Anders Lenhoff, Christer Björkman, Peter Settman, Ola Melzig, and Gregory Lipstone alongside Propagate’s Ben Silverman and Howard T. Owens.

The series is produced by Propagate in association with Universal Television Alternative Studio, a division of Universal Studio Group.

American Song Contest: The format of the contest has been revealed. 10 TV networks claim the rights.

The producer of the American Song Contest, Ola Melzig, gave an informative interview to Jan Bors and his channel the Humans Of Eurovision. Ola Melzig gave more details regarding the format of the contest, and at the same time he revealed that very shortly we will have the announcement of the TV network that will secure the rights of the Song Contest.

The format

Even though the discussion for the final format of the American Song Contest is not over, Ola Melzig said that most of the details have been finalized.

  • There will be 5 preliminary rounds in which 10 US States will compete for the four tickets that lead to the two semifinals.
  • 20 US States that will advance to the two semifinals. 10 US States will compete in each semifinal. 5 US States from each semi final will be qualified for the Grand Final.
  • Only those 10 US States will compete in the Final.

The format of the preliminary rounds will be the same as of the Melodifestivalen, while the one of the Semis and the Final will be as of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Songs Selection

Just like in Eurovision, each US State will be free to decide their own selection method. The entry songs must be original, the vocals will be prerecorded while the lead vocals will be live.

We will work with the record labels of the United States to find the performers and the songs. We won’t have candidates such as Justin Timberlake… but we will focus on renowned artists that are not widely popular.

In the first years, the production team will help the States in finding the artists and the songs, but the goal is in the first three years of the competition, each State to undertake the process of selecting its participation.

Connection between the Eurovision and the American Song Contest

The EBU would like to be a connection between the two aforementioned contests, with the winner of the ESC appearing as the interval act of the ASC and vice versa.

We want the American Song Contest to be available in Europe. We want the Europeans to have access and- why not- the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest to be the interval act of the American one and our winner here to be the interval act in Eurovision.

Which TV network will have the rights?

Until August, 10 TV networks showed interest for the American Song Contest rights. Very soon and by the end of 2020, the TV network, that will have acquired the rights, will have been revealed. The inaugural American Song Contest is expected to take place in Spring 2022 the latest, but the most possible scenario is the Contest to take place during the 2021 Christmas holidays.

US: With entries by state the US song contest as Christer Bjorkman reveals

An interesting interview was given by Christer Bjorkman at Mellopodden and talked about the processes being done in the US for the creation of the American song contest.

Last year, Christer Bjorkman literally split his time between Sweden and the US, having taken over Eurovision’s move across the Atlantic on behalf of EBU. Together with his compatriots Anders Lenhoff, Ola Melzig and Peter Settman, all of Melodifestivalen’s production partners, they have taken over the creation ff the American song contest rom scratch.

Christer Bjorkman thinks it’s time to move Eurovision to America, as traditional music contests (Pop Idol, X Factor, The Voice, etc.) are losing their momentum.

From what Christopher Bjorkman has always said in the American song contest, the various US states will compete.

“Interestingly, each state generally has a rather distinct musical identity, along with, of course, its adjacent states as well. This will almost automatically give us a variety of types of music in the competition”

Christer Bjorkman for the American Song Contest

As with regular Eurovision, both established and young artists will participate. After the end of Melodifestivalen 2020, Christer Bjorkman and his team, after fully defining the product, will present it to American television stations to buy it.

The interest already says it’s big, since everyone who works in television in the US knows Eurovision, they just wonder how it can be done in their country.

There is great interest in this. Next summer, we need to know if this will happen and how.

After four years where Christer Bjorkman was a Producer of the Eurovision Song Contest, he will only travel to Rotterdam as Sweden’s only dead of delegation. The focus of his interest is now abroad and as he typically states, it is something that intrigues him.

“It’s so fun to work on something new. It feels a bit like finding another jar of jam in the closet I’ve never seen!”

The American Song Contest is planned to come to our screens sometime in 2021. Unlike the Eurovision Asia Contest, which has swamped for political reasons, at least as Christer Bjorkman claims, he is optimistic that this project will go ahead as it concerns one only country!
